    Janapadakalyāṇīsutta

    The Finest Lady in the Land

    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा सुम्भेसु विहरति सेदकं नाम सुम्भानं निगमो। तत्र खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “भिक्खवो”ति।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sumbhesu viharati sedakaṁ nāma sumbhānaṁ nigamo. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “bhikkhavo”ti.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sumbhas, near the town of the Sumbhas called Sedaka. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”

    “भदन्ते”ति ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं। भगवा एतदवोच:

    “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca:

    “Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

    “सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, ‘जनपदकल्याणी, जनपदकल्याणीऽति खो, भिक्खवे, महाजनकायो सन्निपतेय्य। ‘सा खो पनस्स जनपदकल्याणी परमपासाविनी नच्चे, परमपासाविनी गीते। जनपदकल्याणी नच्चति गायतीऽति खो, भिक्खवे, भिय्योसो मत्ताय महाजनकायो सन्निपतेय्य।

    “Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ‘janapadakalyāṇī, janapadakalyāṇī’ti kho, bhikkhave, mahājanakāyo sannipateyya. ‘Sā kho panassa janapadakalyāṇī paramapāsāvinī nacce, paramapāsāvinī gīte. Janapadakalyāṇī naccati gāyatī’ti kho, bhikkhave, bhiyyoso mattāya mahājanakāyo sannipateyya.

    “Bhikkhus, suppose that on hearing, ‘The finest lady in the land! The finest lady in the land!’ a large crowd would gather. And the finest lady in the land would dance and sing in a most thrilling way. On hearing, ‘The finest lady in the land is dancing and singing! The finest lady in the land is dancing and singing!’ an even larger crowd would gather.

    अथ पुरिसो आगच्छेय्य जीवितुकामो अमरितुकामो सुखकामो दुक्खप्पटिकूलो। तमेनं एवं वदेय्य: ‘अयं ते, अम्भो पुरिस, समतित्तिको तेलपत्तो अन्तरेन च महासमज्जं अन्तरेन च जनपदकल्याणिया परिहरितब्बो। पुरिसो च ते उक्खित्तासिको पिट्ठितो पिट्ठितो अनुबन्धिस्सति। यत्थेव नं थोकम्पि छड्डेस्सति तत्थेव ते सिरो पातेस्सतीऽति।

    Atha puriso āgaccheyya jīvitukāmo amaritukāmo sukhakāmo dukkhappaṭikūlo. Tamenaṁ evaṁ vadeyya: ‘ayaṁ te, ambho purisa, samatittiko telapatto antarena ca mahāsamajjaṁ antarena ca janapadakalyāṇiyā pariharitabbo. Puriso ca te ukkhittāsiko piṭṭhito piṭṭhito anubandhissati. Yattheva naṁ thokampi chaḍḍessati tattheva te siro pātessatī’ti.

    Then a person would come along who wants to live and doesn’t want to die, who wants to be happy and recoils from pain. They’d say to him, ‘Mister, this is a bowl full to the brim with oil. You must carry it in between this large crowd and the finest lady in the land. And a man with a drawn sword will follow right behind you. Wherever you spill even a drop, he’ll chop off your head right there.’

    तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, अपि नु सो पुरिसो अमुं तेलपत्तं अमनसिकरित्वा बहिद्धा पमादं आहरेय्या”ति?

    Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu so puriso amuṁ telapattaṁ amanasikaritvā bahiddhā pamādaṁ āhareyyā”ti?

    What do you think, bhikkhus? Would that person lose focus on that bowl, and negligently get distracted outside?”

    “नो हेतं, भन्ते”।

    “No hetaṁ, bhante”.

    “No, sir.”

    “उपमा खो म्यायं, भिक्खवे, कता अत्थस्स विञ्ञापनाय। अयं चेवेत्थ अत्थो—समतित्तिको तेलपत्तोति खो, भिक्खवे, कायगताय एतं सतिया अधिवचनं।

    “Upamā kho myāyaṁ, bhikkhave, katā atthassa viññāpanāya. Ayaṁ cevettha attho—samatittiko telapattoti kho, bhikkhave, kāyagatāya etaṁ satiyā adhivacanaṁ.

    “I’ve made up this simile to make a point. And this is what it means. ‘A bowl of oil filled to the brim’ is a term for mindfulness of the body.

    तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘कायगता सति नो भाविता भविस्सति बहुलीकता यानीकता वत्थुकता अनुट्ठिता परिचिता सुसमारद्धाऽति। एवञ्हि खो, भिक्खवे, सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।

    Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘kāyagatā sati no bhāvitā bhavissati bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā’ti. Evañhi kho, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.

    So you should train like this: ‘We will develop mindfulness of the body. We’ll cultivate it, make it our vehicle and our basis, keep it up, consolidate it, and properly implement it.’ That’s how you should train.”

    नालन्दवग्गो दुतियो।

    Nālandavaggo dutiyo.

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    महापुरिसो नालन्दं, चुन्दो चेलञ्च बाहियो; उत्तियो अरियो ब्रह्मा, सेदकं जनपदेन चाति।

    Mahāpuriso nālandaṁ, Cundo celañca bāhiyo; Uttiyo ariyo brahmā, Sedakaṁ janapadena cāti.
