Good Friends
सावत्थिनिदानं।

एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “इध मय्हं, भन्ते, रहोगतस्स पटिसल्लीनस्स एवं चेतसो परिवितक्को उदपादि: ‘स्वाक्खातो भगवता धम्मो, सो च खो कल्याणमित्तस्स कल्याणसहायस्स कल्याणसम्पवङ्कस्स, नो पापमित्तस्स नो पापसहायस्स नो पापसम्पवङ्कस्साऽ”ति।
Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “idha mayhaṁ, bhante, rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṁ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: ‘svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo, so ca kho kalyāṇamittassa kalyāṇasahāyassa kalyāṇasampavaṅkassa, no pāpamittassa no pāpasahāyassa no pāpasampavaṅkassā’”ti.
Seated to one side, King Pasenadi said to the Buddha, “Just now, sir, as I was in private retreat this thought came to mind. ‘The teaching is well explained by the Buddha. But it’s for someone with good friends, companions, and associates, not for someone with bad friends, companions, and associates.’”
“एवमेतं, महाराज, एवमेतं, महाराज। स्वाक्खातो, महाराज, मया धम्मो। सो च खो कल्याणमित्तस्स कल्याणसहायस्स कल्याणसम्पवङ्कस्स, नो पापमित्तस्स नो पापसहायस्स नो पापसम्पवङ्कस्साति।
“Evametaṁ, mahārāja, evametaṁ, mahārāja. Svākkhāto, mahārāja, mayā dhammo. So ca kho kalyāṇamittassa kalyāṇasahāyassa kalyāṇasampavaṅkassa, no pāpamittassa no pāpasahāyassa no pāpasampavaṅkassāti.
“That’s so true, great king! That’s so true!” said the Buddha. And he repeated the king’s statement, adding:
एकमिदाहं, महाराज, समयं सक्केसु विहरामि नगरकं नाम सक्यानं निगमो। अथ खो, महाराज, आनन्दो भिक्खु येनाहं तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा मं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो, महाराज, आनन्दो भिक्खु मं एतदवोच: ‘उपड्ढमिदं, भन्ते, ब्रह्मचरियस्स—यदिदं कल्याणमित्तता कल्याणसहायता कल्याणसम्पवङ्कताऽति।
Ekamidāhaṁ, mahārāja, samayaṁ sakkesu viharāmi nagarakaṁ nāma sakyānaṁ nigamo. Atha kho, mahārāja, ānando bhikkhu yenāhaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā maṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho, mahārāja, ānando bhikkhu maṁ etadavoca: ‘upaḍḍhamidaṁ, bhante, brahmacariyassa—yadidaṁ kalyāṇamittatā kalyāṇasahāyatā kalyāṇasampavaṅkatā’ti.
“Great king, this one time I was staying in the land of the Sakyans where they have a town named Townsville. Then the bhikkhu Ānanda came to me, bowed, sat down to one side, and said: ‘Sir, good friends, companions, and associates are half the spiritual life.’
एवं वुत्ताहं, महाराज, आनन्दं भिक्खुं एतदवोचं: ‘मा हेवं, आनन्द, मा हेवं, आनन्द। सकलमेव हिदं, आनन्द, ब्रह्मचरियं—यदिदं कल्याणमित्तता कल्याणसहायता कल्याणसम्पवङ्कता। कल्याणमित्तस्सेतं, आनन्द, भिक्खुनो पाटिकङ्खं कल्याणसहायस्स कल्याणसम्पवङ्कस्स अरियं अट्ठङ्गिकं मग्गं भावेस्सति अरियं अट्ठङ्गिकं मग्गं बहुलीकरिस्सति।
Evaṁ vuttāhaṁ, mahārāja, ānandaṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavocaṁ: ‘mā hevaṁ, ānanda, mā hevaṁ, ānanda. Sakalameva hidaṁ, ānanda, brahmacariyaṁ—yadidaṁ kalyāṇamittatā kalyāṇasahāyatā kalyāṇasampavaṅkatā. Kalyāṇamittassetaṁ, ānanda, bhikkhuno pāṭikaṅkhaṁ kalyāṇasahāyassa kalyāṇasampavaṅkassa ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvessati ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkarissati.
When he had spoken, I said to him: ‘Not so, Ānanda! Not so, Ānanda! Good friends, companions, and associates are the whole of the spiritual life. A bhikkhu with good friends, companions, and associates can expect to develop and cultivate the noble eightfold path.
कथञ्च, आनन्द, भिक्खु कल्याणमित्तो कल्याणसहायो कल्याणसम्पवङ्को अरियं अट्ठङ्गिकं मग्गं भावेति, अरियं अट्ठङ्गिकं मग्गं बहुलीकरोति? इधानन्द, भिक्खु सम्मादिट्ठिं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं, सम्मासङ्कप्पं भावेति … सम्मावाचं भावेति … सम्माकम्मन्तं भावेति … सम्माआजीवं भावेति … सम्मावायामं भावेति … सम्मासतिं भावेति … सम्मासमाधिं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं। एवं खो, आनन्द, भिक्खु कल्याणमित्तो कल्याणसहायो कल्याणसम्पवङ्को अरियं अट्ठङ्गिकं मग्गं भावेति, अरियं अट्ठङ्गिकं मग्गं बहुलीकरोति। तदमिनापेतं, आनन्द, परियायेन वेदितब्बं यथा सकलमेविदं ब्रह्मचरियं—यदिदं कल्याणमित्तता कल्याणसहायता कल्याणसम्पवङ्कताति।
Kathañca, ānanda, bhikkhu kalyāṇamitto kalyāṇasahāyo kalyāṇasampavaṅko ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāveti, ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkaroti? Idhānanda, bhikkhu sammādiṭṭhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ, sammāsaṅkappaṁ bhāveti … sammāvācaṁ bhāveti … sammākammantaṁ bhāveti … sammāājīvaṁ bhāveti … sammāvāyāmaṁ bhāveti … sammāsatiṁ bhāveti … sammāsamādhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ. Evaṁ kho, ānanda, bhikkhu kalyāṇamitto kalyāṇasahāyo kalyāṇasampavaṅko ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāveti, ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkaroti. Tadamināpetaṁ, ānanda, pariyāyena veditabbaṁ yathā sakalamevidaṁ brahmacariyaṁ—yadidaṁ kalyāṇamittatā kalyāṇasahāyatā kalyāṇasampavaṅkatāti.
And how does a bhikkhu with good friends develop and cultivate the noble eightfold path? It’s when a bhikkhu develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. That’s how a bhikkhu with good friends develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path. And here’s another way to understand how good friends are the whole of the spiritual life.
ममञ्हि, आनन्द, कल्याणमित्तं आगम्म जातिधम्मा सत्ता जातिया परिमुच्चन्ति, जराधम्मा सत्ता जराय परिमुच्चन्ति, ब्याधिधम्मा सत्ता ब्याधितो परिमुच्चन्ति, मरणधम्मा सत्ता मरणेन परिमुच्चन्ति, सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासधम्मा सत्ता सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासेहि परिमुच्चन्ति। इमिना खो एतं, आनन्द, परियायेन वेदितब्बं यथा सकलमेविदं ब्रह्मचरियं—यदिदं कल्याणमित्तता कल्याणसहायता कल्याणसम्पवङ्कताऽति।
Mamañhi, ānanda, kalyāṇamittaṁ āgamma jātidhammā sattā jātiyā parimuccanti, jarādhammā sattā jarāya parimuccanti, byādhidhammā sattā byādhito parimuccanti, maraṇadhammā sattā maraṇena parimuccanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsadhammā sattā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsehi parimuccanti. Iminā kho etaṁ, ānanda, pariyāyena veditabbaṁ yathā sakalamevidaṁ brahmacariyaṁ—yadidaṁ kalyāṇamittatā kalyāṇasahāyatā kalyāṇasampavaṅkatā’ti.
For, by relying on me as a good friend, sentient beings who are liable to rebirth, old age, and death, to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are freed from all these things. This is another way to understand how good friends are the whole of the spiritual life.’
तस्मातिह ते, महाराज, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘कल्याणमित्तो भविस्सामि कल्याणसहायो कल्याणसम्पवङ्कोऽति। एवञ्हि ते, महाराज, सिक्खितब्बं।
Tasmātiha te, mahārāja, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘kalyāṇamitto bhavissāmi kalyāṇasahāyo kalyāṇasampavaṅko’ti. Evañhi te, mahārāja, sikkhitabbaṁ.
So, great king, you should train like this: ‘I will have good friends, companions, and associates.’ That’s how you should train.
कल्याणमित्तस्स ते, महाराज, कल्याणसहायस्स कल्याणसम्पवङ्कस्स अयं एको धम्मो उपनिस्साय विहातब्बो—अप्पमादो कुसलेसु धम्मेसु।
Kalyāṇamittassa te, mahārāja, kalyāṇasahāyassa kalyāṇasampavaṅkassa ayaṁ eko dhammo upanissāya vihātabbo—appamādo kusalesu dhammesu.
When you have good friends, companions, and associates, you should live supported by one thing: diligence in skillful qualities.
अप्पमत्तस्स ते, महाराज, विहरतो अप्पमादं उपनिस्साय, इत्थागारस्स अनुयन्तस्स एवं भविस्सति: ‘राजा खो अप्पमत्तो विहरति, अप्पमादं उपनिस्साय। हन्द मयम्पि अप्पमत्ता विहराम, अप्पमादं उपनिस्सायाऽति। अप्पमत्तस्स ते, महाराज, विहरतो अप्पमादं उपनिस्साय, खत्तियानम्पि अनुयन्तानं एवं भविस्सति: ‘राजा खो अप्पमत्तो विहरति अप्पमादं उपनिस्साय। हन्द मयम्पि अप्पमत्ता विहराम, अप्पमादं उपनिस्सायाऽति। अप्पमत्तस्स ते, महाराज, विहरतो अप्पमादं उपनिस्साय, बलकायस्सपि एवं भविस्सति: ‘राजा खो अप्पमत्तो विहरति अप्पमादं उपनिस्साय। हन्द मयम्पि अप्पमत्ता विहराम, अप्पमादं उपनिस्सायाऽति। अप्पमत्तस्स ते, महाराज, विहरतो अप्पमादं उपनिस्साय, नेगमजानपदस्सपि एवं भविस्सति: ‘राजा खो अप्पमत्तो विहरति, अप्पमादं उपनिस्साय। हन्द मयम्पि अप्पमत्ता विहराम, अप्पमादं उपनिस्सायाऽति?
Appamattassa te, mahārāja, viharato appamādaṁ upanissāya, itthāgārassa anuyantassa evaṁ bhavissati: ‘rājā kho appamatto viharati, appamādaṁ upanissāya. Handa mayampi appamattā viharāma, appamādaṁ upanissāyā’ti. Appamattassa te, mahārāja, viharato appamādaṁ upanissāya, khattiyānampi anuyantānaṁ evaṁ bhavissati: ‘rājā kho appamatto viharati appamādaṁ upanissāya. Handa mayampi appamattā viharāma, appamādaṁ upanissāyā’ti. Appamattassa te, mahārāja, viharato appamādaṁ upanissāya, balakāyassapi evaṁ bhavissati: ‘rājā kho appamatto viharati appamādaṁ upanissāya. Handa mayampi appamattā viharāma, appamādaṁ upanissāyā’ti. Appamattassa te, mahārāja, viharato appamādaṁ upanissāya, negamajānapadassapi evaṁ bhavissati: ‘rājā kho appamatto viharati, appamādaṁ upanissāya. Handa mayampi appamattā viharāma, appamādaṁ upanissāyā’ti?
When you’re diligent, supported by diligence, your ladies of the harem, aristocrat vassals, troops, and people of town and country will think: ‘The king lives diligently, supported by diligence. We’d better live diligently, supported by diligence!’
अप्पमत्तस्स ते, महाराज, विहरतो अप्पमादं उपनिस्साय, अत्तापि गुत्तो रक्खितो भविस्सति—इत्थागारम्पि गुत्तं रक्खितं भविस्सति, कोसकोट्ठागारम्पि गुत्तं रक्खितं भविस्सती”ति।
Appamattassa te, mahārāja, viharato appamādaṁ upanissāya, attāpi gutto rakkhito bhavissati—itthāgārampi guttaṁ rakkhitaṁ bhavissati, kosakoṭṭhāgārampi guttaṁ rakkhitaṁ bhavissatī”ti.
When you’re diligent, supported by diligence, then not only you yourself, but your ladies of the harem, and your treasury and storehouses will be guarded and protected.”

That is what the Buddha said. …
“भोगे पत्थयमानेन, उळारे अपरापरे; अप्पमादं पसंसन्ति, पुञ्ञकिरियासु पण्डिता; अप्पमत्तो उभो अत्थे, अधिग्गण्हाति पण्डितो।
“Bhoge patthayamānena, uḷāre aparāpare; Appamādaṁ pasaṁsanti, puññakiriyāsu paṇḍitā; Appamatto ubho atthe, adhiggaṇhāti paṇḍito.
“For one who desires a continuous flow of exceptional wealth, the astute praise diligence in making merit. Being diligent, an astute person secures both benefits:
दिट्ठे धम्मे च यो अत्थो, यो चत्थो सम्परायिको; अत्थाभिसमया धीरो, पण्डितोति पवुच्चती”ति।
Diṭṭhe dhamme ca yo attho, yo cattho samparāyiko; Atthābhisamayā dhīro, paṇḍitoti pavuccatī”ti.
the benefit in this life, and in lives to come. A wise one, comprehending the meaning, is said to be astute.”
