    कसिभारद्वाजसुत्त

    Kasibhāradvājasutta

    With Bhāradvāja the Farmer

    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा मगधेसु विहरति दक्खिणागिरिस्मिं एकनाळायं ब्राह्मणगामे।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā magadhesu viharati dakkhiṇāgirismiṁ ekanāḷāyaṁ brāhmaṇagāme.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Magadhans in the Southern Hills near the brahmin village of Ekanāḷa.

    तेन खो पन समयेन कसिभारद्वाजस्स ब्राह्मणस्स पञ्चमत्तानि नङ्गलसतानि पयुत्तानि होन्ति वप्पकाले। अथ खो भगवा पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय येन कसिभारद्वाजस्स ब्राह्मणस्स कम्मन्तो तेनुपसङ्कमि।

    Tena kho pana samayena kasibhāradvājassa1 brāhmaṇassa pañcamattāni naṅgalasatāni payuttāni honti vappakāle. Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena kasibhāradvājassa brāhmaṇassa kammanto tenupasaṅkami.

    Now at that time the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Farmer had harnessed around five hundred plows, it being the season for sowing. Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to where Bhāradvāja the Farmer was working.

    तेन खो पन समयेन कसिभारद्वाजस्स ब्राह्मणस्स परिवेसना वत्तति। अथ खो भगवा येन परिवेसना तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठासि।

    Tena kho pana samayena kasibhāradvājassa brāhmaṇassa parivesanā vattati. Atha kho bhagavā yena parivesanā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.

    Now at that time Bhāradvāja the Farmer was distributing food. Then the Buddha went to where the distribution was taking place and stood to one side.

    अद्दसा खो कसिभारद्वाजो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं पिण्डाय ठितं। दिस्वा भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अहं खो, समण, कसामि च वपामि च, कसित्वा च वपित्वा च भुञ्जामि। त्वम्पि, समण, कसस्सु च वपस्सु च, कसित्वा च वपित्वा च भुञ्जस्सू”ति।

    Addasā kho kasibhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ piṇḍāya ṭhitaṁ. Disvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “ahaṁ kho, samaṇa, kasāmi ca vapāmi ca, kasitvā ca vapitvā ca bhuñjāmi. Tvampi, samaṇa, kasassu ca vapassu ca, kasitvā ca vapitvā ca bhuñjassū”ti.

    Bhāradvāja the Farmer saw him standing for alms and said to him, “I plough and sow, ascetic, and then I eat. You too should plough and sow, then you may eat.”

    “अहम्पि खो, ब्राह्मण, कसामि च वपामि च, कसित्वा च वपित्वा च भुञ्जामी”ति।

    “Ahampi kho, brāhmaṇa, kasāmi ca vapāmi ca, kasitvā ca vapitvā ca bhuñjāmī”ti.

    “I too plough and sow, brahmin, and then I eat.”

    “न खो मयं पस्साम भोतो गोतमस्स युगं वा नङ्गलं वा फालं वा पाचनं वा बलीबद्दे वा, अथ च पन भवं गोतमो एवमाह: ‘अहम्पि खो, ब्राह्मण, कसामि च वपामि च, कसित्वा च वपित्वा च भुञ्जामीऽ”ति।

    “Na kho mayaṁ passāma bhoto gotamassa yugaṁ vā naṅgalaṁ vā phālaṁ vā pācanaṁ vā balībadde vā, atha ca pana bhavaṁ gotamo evamāha: ‘ahampi kho, brāhmaṇa, kasāmi ca vapāmi ca, kasitvā ca vapitvā ca bhuñjāmī’”ti.

    “I don’t see Master Gotama with a yoke or plow or plowshare or goad or oxen, yet he says: ‘I too plough and sow, brahmin, and then I eat.’”

    अथ खो कसिभारद्वाजो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं गाथाय अज्झभासि:

    Atha kho kasibhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    Then Bhāradvāja the Farmer addressed the Buddha in verse:

    “कस्सको पटिजानासि, न च पस्सामि ते कसिं; कस्सको पुच्छितो ब्रूहि, कथं जानेमु तं कसिन्”ति।

    “Kassako paṭijānāsi, na ca passāmi te kasiṁ; Kassako pucchito brūhi, kathaṁ jānemu taṁ kasin”ti.

    “You claim to be a farmer, but I don’t see you farming. Tell me how you’re a farmer when asked: how am I to recognize your farming?”

    “सद्धा बीजं तपो वुट्ठि, पञ्ञा मे युगनङ्गलं; हिरी ईसा मनो योत्तं, सति मे फालपाचनं।

    “Saddhā bījaṁ tapo vuṭṭhi, paññā me yuganaṅgalaṁ; Hirī īsā mano yottaṁ, sati me phālapācanaṁ.

    “Faith is my seed, fervor my rain, and wisdom is my yoke and plough. Conscience is my pole, mind my strap, mindfulness my plowshare and goad.

    कायगुत्तो वचीगुत्तो, आहारे उदरे यतो; सच्चं करोमि निद्दानं, सोरच्चं मे पमोचनं।

    Kāyagutto vacīgutto, āhāre udare yato; Saccaṁ karomi niddānaṁ, soraccaṁ me pamocanaṁ.

    Guarded in body and speech, I restrict my intake of food. I use truth as my scythe, and gentleness is my release.

    वीरियं मे धुरधोरय्हं, योगक्खेमाधिवाहनं; गच्छति अनिवत्तन्तं, यत्थ गन्त्वा न सोचति।

    Vīriyaṁ me dhuradhorayhaṁ, yogakkhemādhivāhanaṁ; Gacchati anivattantaṁ, yattha gantvā na socati.

    Energy is my beast of burden, transporting me to sanctuary from the yoke. It goes without turning back to where there is no sorrow.

    एवमेसा कसी कट्ठा, सा होति अमतप्फला; एतं कसिं कसित्वान, सब्बदुक्खा पमुच्चती”ति।

    Evamesā kasī kaṭṭhā, sā hoti amatapphalā; Etaṁ kasiṁ kasitvāna, sabbadukkhā pamuccatī”ti.

    That’s how to do the farming that has the Deathless as its fruit. When you finish this farming you’re released from all suffering.”

    “भुञ्जतु भवं गोतमो। कस्सको भवं। यञ्हि भवं गोतमो अमतप्फलम्पि कसिं कसती”ति।

    “Bhuñjatu bhavaṁ gotamo. Kassako bhavaṁ. Yañhi bhavaṁ gotamo amatapphalampi kasiṁ kasatī”ti.

    “Eat, Master Gotama, you are truly a farmer. For Master Gotama does the farming that has the Deathless as its fruit.”

    “गाथाभिगीतं मे अभोजनेय्यं, सम्पस्सतं ब्राह्मण नेस धम्मो; गाथाभिगीतं पनुदन्ति बुद्धा, धम्मे सति ब्राह्मण वुत्तिरेसा।

    “Gāthābhigītaṁ me abhojaneyyaṁ, Sampassataṁ brāhmaṇa nesa dhammo; Gāthābhigītaṁ panudanti buddhā, Dhamme sati brāhmaṇa vuttiresā.

    “Food enchanted by a spell isn’t fit for me to eat. That’s not the principle of those who see, brahmin. The Buddhas reject things enchanted with spells. Since there is such a principle, brahmin, that’s how they live.

    अञ्ञेन च केवलिनं महेसिं, खीणासवं कुक्कुच्चवूपसन्तं; अन्नेन पानेन उपट्ठहस्सु, खेत्तञ्हि तं पुञ्ञपेक्खस्स होती”ति।

    Aññena ca kevalinaṁ mahesiṁ, Khīṇāsavaṁ kukkuccavūpasantaṁ; Annena pānena upaṭṭhahassu, Khettañhi taṁ puññapekkhassa hotī”ti.

    Serve with other food and drink the consummate one, the great seer, with defilements ended and remorse stilled. For he is the field for the seeker of merit.”

    एवं वुत्ते, कसिभारद्वाजो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम …पे… अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।

    Evaṁ vutte, kasibhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.

    When he had spoken, the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Farmer said to the Buddha, “Excellent, Master Gotama … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
