Kaṭṭhahārasutta
Collecting Firewood
एकं समयं भगवा कोसलेसु विहरति अञ्ञतरस्मिं वनसण्डे।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove.
तेन खो पन समयेन अञ्ञतरस्स भारद्वाजगोत्तस्स ब्राह्मणस्स सम्बहुला अन्तेवासिका कट्ठहारका माणवका येन वनसण्डो तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा अद्दसंसु भगवन्तं तस्मिं वनसण्डे निसिन्नं पल्लङ्कं आभुजित्वा उजुं कायं पणिधाय परिमुखं सतिं उपट्ठपेत्वा। दिस्वान येन भारद्वाजगोत्तो ब्राह्मणो तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भारद्वाजगोत्तं ब्राह्मणं एतदवोचुं: “यग्घे भवं जानेय्यासि। असुकस्मिं वनसण्डे समणो निसिन्नो पल्लङ्कं आभुजित्वा उजुं कायं पणिधाय परिमुखं सतिं उपट्ठपेत्वा”।
Tena kho pana samayena aññatarassa bhāradvājagottassa brāhmaṇassa sambahulā antevāsikā kaṭṭhahārakā māṇavakā yena vanasaṇḍo tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā addasaṁsu bhagavantaṁ tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe nisinnaṁ pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā. Disvāna yena bhāradvājagotto brāhmaṇo tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhāradvājagottaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ etadavocuṁ: “yagghe bhavaṁ jāneyyāsi. Asukasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe samaṇo nisinno pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā”.
Then several youths, students of one of the Bhāradvāja brahmins, approached a forest grove while collecting firewood. They saw the Buddha sitting down cross-legged at the root of a certain sal tree, his body set straight, and mindfulness established in front of him. Seeing this, they went up to Bhāradvāja and said to him, “Please sir, you should know this. In such and such a forest grove the ascetic Gotama is sitting down cross-legged, his body set straight, and mindfulness established in front of him.”
अथ खो भारद्वाजगोत्तो ब्राह्मणो तेहि माणवकेहि सद्धिं येन सो वनसण्डो तेनुपसङ्कमि। अद्दसा खो भगवन्तं तस्मिं वनसण्डे निसिन्नं पल्लङ्कं आभुजित्वा उजुं कायं पणिधाय परिमुखं सतिं उपट्ठपेत्वा।
Atha kho bhāradvājagotto brāhmaṇo tehi māṇavakehi saddhiṁ yena so vanasaṇḍo tenupasaṅkami. Addasā kho bhagavantaṁ tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe nisinnaṁ pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā.
Then Bhāradvāja together with those students went to that forest grove where he saw the Buddha sitting down cross-legged, his body set straight, and mindfulness established in front of him.
दिस्वान येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं गाथाय अज्झभासि:
Disvāna yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
He went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse:
“गम्भीररूपे बहुभेरवे वने, सुञ्ञं अरञ्ञं विजनं विगाहिय; अनिञ्जमानेन ठितेन वग्गुना, सुचारुरूपं वत भिक्खु झायसि।
“Gambhīrarūpe bahubherave vane, Suññaṁ araññaṁ vijanaṁ vigāhiya; Aniñjamānena ṭhitena vaggunā, Sucārurūpaṁ vata bhikkhu jhāyasi.
“Deep in the jungle so full of terrors, you’ve plunged into the empty, desolate wilderness. Still, steady, and graceful: how beautifully you meditate, bhikkhu!
न यत्थ गीतं नपि यत्थ वादितं, एको अरञ्ञे वनवस्सितो मुनि; अच्छेररूपं पटिभाति मं इदं, यदेकको पीतिमनो वने वसे।
Na yattha gītaṁ napi yattha vāditaṁ, Eko araññe vanavassito muni; Accherarūpaṁ paṭibhāti maṁ idaṁ, Yadekako pītimano vane vase.
Where there is no song or music, a lonely sage resorts to the wilderness. This strikes me as an amazing thing, that you dwell so joyfully alone in the jungle.
मञ्ञामहं लोकाधिपतिसहब्यतं, आकङ्खमानो तिदिवं अनुत्तरं; कस्मा भवं विजनमरञ्ञमस्सितो, तपो इध कुब्बसि ब्रह्मपत्तिया”ति।
Maññāmahaṁ lokādhipatisahabyataṁ, Ākaṅkhamāno tidivaṁ anuttaraṁ; Kasmā bhavaṁ vijanamaraññamassito, Tapo idha kubbasi brahmapattiyā”ti.
I suppose you wish to be reborn in the company of the supreme sovereign
“या काचि कङ्खा अभिनन्दना वा, अनेकधातूसु पुथू सदासिता; अञ्ञाणमूलप्पभवा पजप्पिता, सब्बा मया ब्यन्तिकता समूलिका।
“Yā kāci kaṅkhā abhinandanā vā, Anekadhātūsu puthū sadāsitā; Aññāṇamūlappabhavā pajappitā, Sabbā mayā byantikatā samūlikā.
“Any wishes and hopes that are always attached to the many and various realms—the yearnings sprung from the root of unknowing—I’ve eliminated them all down to the root.
स्वाहं अकङ्खो असितो अनूपयो, सब्बेसु धम्मेसु विसुद्धदस्सनो; पप्पुय्य सम्बोधिमनुत्तरं सिवं, झायामहं ब्रह्म रहो विसारदो”ति।
Svāhaṁ akaṅkho asito anūpayo, Sabbesu dhammesu visuddhadassano; Pappuyya sambodhimanuttaraṁ sivaṁ, Jhāyāmahaṁ brahma raho visārado”ti.
So I’m wishless, unattached, disengaged; amongst all things, my vision is clear. I’ve attained the state of grace,
एवं वुत्ते, भारद्वाजगोत्तो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम, अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम …पे… अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।
Evaṁ vutte, bhāradvājagotto brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
When he had spoken, Bhāradvāja said to the Buddha, “Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
