    With Kimbila

    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा किमिलायं विहरति वेळुवने। तत्र खो भगवा आयस्मन्तं किमिलं आमन्तेसि: “कथं भावितो नु खो, किमिल, आनापानस्सतिसमाधि कथं बहुलीकतो महप्फलो होति महानिसंसो”ति?

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kimilāyaṁ1 viharati veḷuvane. Tatra kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ kimilaṁ āmantesi: “kathaṁ bhāvito nu kho, kimila, ānāpānassatisamādhi kathaṁ bahulīkato mahapphalo hoti mahānisaṁso”ti?

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Kimbilā in the Freshwater Mangrove Wood. Then the Buddha said to Venerable Kimbila, “Kimbila, how is immersion due to mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated so that it is very fruitful and beneficial?”

    एवं वुत्ते, आयस्मा किमिलो तुण्ही अहोसि।

    Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā kimilo tuṇhī ahosi.

    When he said this, Kimbila kept silent.

    दुतियम्पि खो भगवा …पे…

    Dutiyampi kho bhagavā …pe…

    For a second time …

    ततियम्पि खो भगवा आयस्मन्तं किमिलं आमन्तेसि: “कथं भावितो नु खो, किमिल, आनापानस्सतिसमाधि कथं बहुलीकतो महप्फलो होति महानिसंसो”ति? ततियम्पि खो आयस्मा किमिलो तुण्ही अहोसि।

    tatiyampi kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ kimilaṁ āmantesi: “kathaṁ bhāvito nu kho, kimila, ānāpānassatisamādhi kathaṁ bahulīkato mahapphalo hoti mahānisaṁso”ti? Tatiyampi kho āyasmā kimilo tuṇhī ahosi.

    And for a third time, the Buddha said to him, “How is immersion due to mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated so that it is very fruitful and beneficial?” And a second time and a third time Kimbila kept silent.

    एवं वुत्ते, आयस्मा आनन्दो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “एतस्स, भगवा, कालो; एतस्स, सुगत, कालो। यं भगवा आनापानस्सतिसमाधिं भासेय्य, भगवतो सुत्वा भिक्खू धारेस्सन्ती”ति।

    Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “etassa, bhagavā, kālo; etassa, sugata, kālo. Yaṁ bhagavā ānāpānassatisamādhiṁ bhāseyya, bhagavato sutvā bhikkhū dhāressantī”ti.

    When he said this, Venerable Ānanda said to the Buddha, “Now is the time, Blessed One! Now is the time, Holy One! Let the Buddha speak on immersion due to mindfulness of breathing. The bhikkhus will listen and remember it.”

    “तेनहानन्द, सुणाहि, साधुकं मनसि करोहि; भासिस्सामी”ति।

    “Tenahānanda, suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmī”ti.

    “Well then, Ānanda, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति खो आयस्मा आनन्दो भगवतो पच्चस्सोसि। भगवा एतदवोच:

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā ānando bhagavato paccassosi. Bhagavā etadavoca:

    “Yes, sir,” Ānanda replied. The Buddha said this:

    “कथं भावितो च, आनन्द, आनापानस्सतिसमाधि कथं बहुलीकतो महप्फलो होति महानिसंसो? इधानन्द, भिक्खु अरञ्ञगतो वा रुक्खमूलगतो वा सुञ्ञागारगतो वा निसीदति पल्लङ्कं आभुजित्वा उजुं कायं पणिधाय परिमुखं सतिं उपट्ठपेत्वा।

    “kathaṁ bhāvito ca, ānanda, ānāpānassatisamādhi kathaṁ bahulīkato mahapphalo hoti mahānisaṁso? Idhānanda, bhikkhu araññagato vā rukkhamūlagato vā suññāgāragato vā nisīdati pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā.

    “Ānanda, how is immersion due to mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated so that it is very fruitful and beneficial? It’s when a bhikkhu—gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut—sits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in front of them.

    सो सतोव अस्ससति, सतोव पस्ससति …पे…

    So satova assasati, satova passasati …pe…

    Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out. …

    ‘पटिनिस्सग्गानुपस्सी अस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति, ‘पटिनिस्सग्गानुपस्सी पस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति। एवं भावितो खो, आनन्द, आनापानस्सतिसमाधि एवं बहुलीकतो महप्फलो होति महानिसंसो।

    ‘paṭinissaggānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘paṭinissaggānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati. Evaṁ bhāvito kho, ānanda, ānāpānassatisamādhi evaṁ bahulīkato mahapphalo hoti mahānisaṁso.

    They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in observing letting go.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out observing letting go.’ That’s how immersion due to mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated, is very fruitful and beneficial.

    यस्मिं समये, आनन्द, भिक्खु दीघं वा अस्ससन्तो ‘दीघं अस्ससामीऽति पजानाति, दीघं वा पस्ससन्तो ‘दीघं पस्ससामीऽति पजानाति; रस्सं वा अस्ससन्तो ‘रस्सं अस्ससामीऽति पजानाति, रस्सं वा पस्ससन्तो ‘रस्सं पस्ससामीऽति पजानाति; ‘सब्बकायप्पटिसंवेदी अस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति, ‘सब्बकायप्पटिसंवेदी पस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति; ‘पस्सम्भयं कायसङ्खारं अस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति, ‘पस्सम्भयं कायसङ्खारं पस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति—काये कायानुपस्सी, आनन्द, भिक्खु तस्मिं समये विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। तं किस्स हेतु? कायञ्ञतराहं, आनन्द, एतं वदामि यदिदं—अस्सासपस्सासं। तस्मातिहानन्द, काये कायानुपस्सी भिक्खु तस्मिं समये विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं।

    Yasmiṁ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu dīghaṁ vā assasanto ‘dīghaṁ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, dīghaṁ vā passasanto ‘dīghaṁ passasāmī’ti pajānāti; rassaṁ vā assasanto ‘rassaṁ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, rassaṁ vā passasanto ‘rassaṁ passasāmī’ti pajānāti; ‘sabbakāyappaṭisaṁvedī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘sabbakāyappaṭisaṁvedī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati; ‘passambhayaṁ kāyasaṅkhāraṁ assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘passambhayaṁ kāyasaṅkhāraṁ passasissāmī’ti sikkhati—kāye kāyānupassī, ānanda, bhikkhu tasmiṁ samaye viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Taṁ kissa hetu? Kāyaññatarāhaṁ, ānanda, etaṁ vadāmi yadidaṁ—assāsapassāsaṁ. Tasmātihānanda, kāye kāyānupassī bhikkhu tasmiṁ samaye viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

    There’s a time when a bhikkhu is breathing in heavily, and they know: ‘I’m breathing in heavily.’ Breathing out heavily they know: ‘I’m breathing out heavily.’ When breathing in lightly they know: ‘I’m breathing in lightly.’ Breathing out lightly they know: ‘I’m breathing out lightly.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in experiencing the whole body.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out experiencing the whole body.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in stilling physical processes.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out stilling physical processes.’ At such a time a bhikkhu is meditating by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. Why is that? Because the breath is a certain aspect of the body, I say. Therefore, at such a time a bhikkhu is meditating by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

    यस्मिं समये, आनन्द, भिक्खु ‘पीतिप्पटिसंवेदी अस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति, ‘पीतिप्पटिसंवेदी पस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति; ‘सुखप्पटिसंवेदी अस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति, ‘सुखप्पटिसंवेदी पस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति; ‘चित्तसङ्खारप्पटिसंवेदी अस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति, ‘चित्तसङ्खारप्पटिसंवेदी पस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति; ‘पस्सम्भयं चित्तसङ्खारं पस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति—वेदनासु वेदनानुपस्सी, आनन्द, भिक्खु तस्मिं समये विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। तं किस्स हेतु? वेदनाञ्ञतराहं, आनन्द, एतं वदामि, यदिदं—अस्सासपस्सासानं साधुकं मनसिकारं। तस्मातिहानन्द, वेदनासु वेदनानुपस्सी भिक्खु तस्मिं समये विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं।

    Yasmiṁ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu ‘pītippaṭisaṁvedī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘pītippaṭisaṁvedī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati; ‘sukhappaṭisaṁvedī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘sukhappaṭisaṁvedī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati; ‘cittasaṅkhārappaṭisaṁvedī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘cittasaṅkhārappaṭisaṁvedī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati; ‘passambhayaṁ cittasaṅkhāraṁ passasissāmī’ti sikkhati—vedanāsu vedanānupassī, ānanda, bhikkhu tasmiṁ samaye viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Taṁ kissa hetu? Vedanāññatarāhaṁ, ānanda, etaṁ vadāmi, yadidaṁ—assāsapassāsānaṁ2 sādhukaṁ manasikāraṁ. Tasmātihānanda, vedanāsu vedanānupassī bhikkhu tasmiṁ samaye viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

    There’s a time when a bhikkhu practices like this: ‘I’ll breathe in experiencing rapture.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out experiencing rapture.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in experiencing bliss.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out experiencing bliss.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in experiencing the mental processes.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out experiencing the mental processes.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in stilling mental processes.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out stilling mental processes.’ At such a time a bhikkhu is meditating by observing an aspect of feelings—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. Why is that? Because careful application of mind to the in-breaths and out-breaths is a certain aspect of feelings, I say. Therefore, at such a time a bhikkhu is meditating by observing an aspect of feelings—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

    यस्मिं समये, आनन्द, भिक्खु ‘चित्तप्पटिसंवेदी अस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति, ‘चित्तप्पटिसंवेदी पस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति; अभिप्पमोदयं चित्तं …पे… समादहं चित्तं … ‘विमोचयं चित्तं अस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति, ‘विमोचयं चित्तं पस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति—चित्ते चित्तानुपस्सी, आनन्द, भिक्खु तस्मिं समये विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। तं किस्स हेतु? नाहं, आनन्द, मुट्ठस्सतिस्स असम्पजानस्स आनापानस्सतिसमाधिभावनं वदामि। तस्मातिहानन्द, चित्ते चित्तानुपस्सी भिक्खु तस्मिं समये विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं।

    Yasmiṁ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu ‘cittappaṭisaṁvedī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘cittappaṭisaṁvedī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati; abhippamodayaṁ cittaṁ …pe… samādahaṁ cittaṁ … ‘vimocayaṁ cittaṁ assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘vimocayaṁ cittaṁ passasissāmī’ti sikkhati—citte cittānupassī, ānanda, bhikkhu tasmiṁ samaye viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Taṁ kissa hetu? Nāhaṁ, ānanda, muṭṭhassatissa asampajānassa ānāpānassatisamādhibhāvanaṁ vadāmi. Tasmātihānanda, citte cittānupassī bhikkhu tasmiṁ samaye viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

    There’s a time when a bhikkhu practices like this: ‘I’ll breathe in experiencing the mind.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out experiencing the mind.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in gladdening the mind.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out gladdening the mind.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in immersing the mind in samādhi.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out immersing the mind in samādhi.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in freeing the mind.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out freeing the mind.’ At such a time a bhikkhu is meditating by observing an aspect of the mind—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. Why is that? Because there is no development of immersion due to mindfulness of breathing for someone who is unmindful and lacks awareness, I say. Therefore, at such a time a bhikkhu is meditating by observing an aspect of the mind—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

    यस्मिं समये, आनन्द, भिक्खु ‘अनिच्चानुपस्सी अस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति …पे… विरागानुपस्सी … निरोधानुपस्सी … ‘पटिनिस्सग्गानुपस्सी अस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति, ‘पटिनिस्सग्गानुपस्सी पस्ससिस्सामीऽति सिक्खति—धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सी, आनन्द, भिक्खु तस्मिं समये विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। सो यं तं होति अभिज्झादोमनस्सानं पहानं तं पञ्ञाय दिस्वा साधुकं अज्झुपेक्खिता होति। तस्मातिहानन्द, धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सी भिक्खु तस्मिं समये विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं।

    Yasmiṁ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu ‘aniccānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati …pe… virāgānupassī … nirodhānupassī … ‘paṭinissaggānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘paṭinissaggānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati—dhammesu dhammānupassī, ānanda, bhikkhu tasmiṁ samaye viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. So yaṁ taṁ hoti abhijjhādomanassānaṁ pahānaṁ taṁ paññāya disvā sādhukaṁ ajjhupekkhitā hoti. Tasmātihānanda, dhammesu dhammānupassī bhikkhu tasmiṁ samaye viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

    There’s a time when a bhikkhu practices like this: ‘I’ll breathe in observing impermanence.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out observing impermanence.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in observing fading away.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out observing fading away.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in observing cessation.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out observing cessation.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe in observing letting go.’ They practice like this: ‘I’ll breathe out observing letting go.’ At such a time a bhikkhu is meditating by observing an aspect of principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. Having seen with wisdom the giving up of covetousness and displeasure, they watch closely over with equanimity. Therefore, at such a time a bhikkhu is meditating by observing an aspect of principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

    सेय्यथापि, आनन्द, चतुमहापथे महापंसुपुञ्जो। पुरत्थिमाय चेपि दिसायं आगच्छेय्य सकटं वा रथो वा, उपहनतेव तं पंसुपुञ्जं; पच्छिमाय चेपि दिसाय आगच्छेय्य … उत्तराय चेपि दिसाय … दक्खिणाय चेपि दिसाय आगच्छेय्य सकटं वा रथो वा, उपहनतेव तं पंसुपुञ्जं।

    Seyyathāpi, ānanda, catumahāpathe3 mahāpaṁsupuñjo. Puratthimāya cepi disāyaṁ āgaccheyya sakaṭaṁ vā ratho vā, upahanateva taṁ paṁsupuñjaṁ; pacchimāya cepi disāya āgaccheyya … uttarāya cepi disāya … dakkhiṇāya cepi disāya āgaccheyya sakaṭaṁ vā ratho vā, upahanateva taṁ paṁsupuñjaṁ.

    Suppose there was a large heap of sand at the crossroads. And a cart or chariot were to come by from the east, west, north, or south and destroy that heap of sand.

    एवमेव खो, आनन्द, भिक्खु काये कायानुपस्सी विहरन्तोपि उपहनतेव पापके अकुसले धम्मे; वेदनासु …पे… चित्ते …पे… धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सी विहरन्तोपि उपहनतेव पापके अकुसले धम्मे”ति।

    Evameva kho, ānanda, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharantopi upahanateva pāpake akusale dhamme; vedanāsu …pe… citte …pe… dhammesu dhammānupassī viharantopi upahanateva pāpake akusale dhamme”ti.

    In the same way, when a bhikkhu is meditating by observing an aspect of the body, feelings, mind, or principles, they destroy bad, unskillful qualities.”

    Tassuddānaṁ

    एकधम्मो च बोज्झङ्गो, सुद्धिकञ्च दुवे फला; अरिट्ठो कप्पिनो दीपो, वेसाली किमिलेन चाति।

    Ekadhammo ca bojjhaṅgo, suddhikañca duve phalā; Ariṭṭho kappino dīpo, vesālī kimilena cāti.
