The World
සාවත්ථියං විහරති.
At Sāvatthī.
“ලෝකස්ස, භික්ඛවේ, සමුදයඤ්ච අත්ථඞ්ගමඤ්ච දේසේස්සාමි. තං සුණාථ, සාධුකං මනසි කරෝථ, භාසිස්සාමී”ති.
“Bhikkhus, I will teach you the origin and ending of the world. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”
“ඒවං, භන්තේ”ති ඛෝ තේ භික්ඛූ භගවතෝ පච්චස්සෝසුං. භගවා ඒතදවෝච:
“Yes, sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“කතමෝ ච, භික්ඛවේ, ලෝකස්ස සමුදයෝ? චක්ඛුඤ්ච පටිච්ච රූපේ ච උප්පජ්ජති චක්ඛුවිඤ්ඤාණං. තිණ්ණං සඞ්ගති ඵස්සෝ. ඵස්සපච්චයා වේදනා; වේදනාපච්චයා තණ්හා; තණ්හාපච්චයා උපාදානං; උපාදානපච්චයා භවෝ; භවපච්චයා ජාති; ජාතිපච්චයා ජරාමරණං සෝකපරිදේවදුක්ඛදෝමනස්සුපායාසා සම්භවන්ති. අයං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, ලෝකස්ස සමුදයෝ.
“And what, bhikkhus, is the origin of the world? Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact. Contact is a condition for feeling. Feeling is a condition for craving. Craving is a condition for grasping. Grasping is a condition for continued existence. Continued existence is a condition for rebirth. Rebirth is a condition for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be. This is the origin of the world.
සෝතඤ්ච පටිච්ච සද්දේ ච …පේ… ඝානඤ්ච පටිච්ච ගන්ධේ ච … ජිව්හඤ්ච පටිච්ච රසේ ච … කායඤ්ච පටිච්ච ඵෝට්ඨබ්බේ ච … මනඤ්ච පටිච්ච ධම්මේ ච උප්පජ්ජති මනෝවිඤ්ඤාණං. තිණ්ණං සඞ්ගති ඵස්සෝ. ඵස්සපච්චයා වේදනා …පේ… ජාතිපච්චයා ජරාමරණං සෝකපරිදේවදුක්ඛදෝමනස්සුපායාසා සම්භවන්ති. අයං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, ලෝකස්ස සමුදයෝ.

And what is the ending of the world? Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact. Contact is a condition for feeling. Feeling is a condition for craving. When that craving fades away and ceases with nothing left over, grasping ceases. When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases. … That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases. This is the ending of the world.
