    Lokāyatikasutta

    A Cosmologist

    सावत्थियं विहरति।

    Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

    At Sāvatthī.

    अथ खो लोकायतिको ब्राह्मणो येन भगवा …पे… एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो लोकायतिको ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Atha kho lokāyatiko brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho lokāyatiko brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Then a brahmin cosmologist went up to the Buddha … Seated to one side he said to the Buddha:

    “किं नु खो, भो गोतम, सब्बमत्थी”ति?

    “Kiṁ nu kho, bho gotama, sabbamatthī”ti?

    “Master Gotama, does all exist?”

    “‘सब्बमत्थीऽति खो, ब्राह्मण, जेट्ठमेतं लोकायतं”।

    “‘Sabbamatthī’ti kho, brāhmaṇa, jeṭṭhametaṁ lokāyataṁ”.

    “‘All exists’: this is the oldest cosmology, brahmin.”

    “किं पन, भो गोतम, सब्बं नत्थी”ति?

    “Kiṁ pana, bho gotama, sabbaṁ natthī”ti?

    “Then does all not exist?”

    “‘सब्बं नत्थीऽति खो, ब्राह्मण, दुतियमेतं लोकायतं”।

    “‘Sabbaṁ natthī’ti kho, brāhmaṇa, dutiyametaṁ lokāyataṁ”.

    “‘All does not exist’: this is the second cosmology.

    “किं नु खो, भो गोतम, सब्बमेकत्तन्”ति?

    “Kiṁ nu kho, bho gotama, sabbamekattan”ti?

    “Well, is all a unity?”

    “‘सब्बमेकत्तन्ऽति खो, ब्राह्मण, ततियमेतं लोकायतं”।

    “‘Sabbamekattan’ti kho, brāhmaṇa, tatiyametaṁ lokāyataṁ”.

    “‘All is a unity’: this is the third cosmology.

    “किं पन, भो गोतम, सब्बं पुथुत्तन्”ति?

    “Kiṁ pana, bho gotama, sabbaṁ puthuttan”ti?

    “Then is all a plurality?”

    “‘सब्बं पुथुत्तन्ऽति खो, ब्राह्मण, चतुत्थमेतं लोकायतं।

    “‘Sabbaṁ puthuttan’ti kho, brāhmaṇa, catutthametaṁ lokāyataṁ.

    “‘All is a plurality’: this is the fourth cosmology.

    एते ते, ब्राह्मण, उभो अन्ते अनुपगम्म मज्झेन तथागतो धम्मं देसेति: ‘अविज्जापच्चया सङ्खारा;

    Ete te, brāhmaṇa, ubho ante anupagamma majjhena tathāgato dhammaṁ deseti: ‘avijjāpaccayā saṅkhārā;

    Avoiding these two extremes, the Realized One teaches by the middle way: ‘Ignorance is a condition for choices.

    सङ्खारपच्चया विञ्ञाणं …पे… एवमेतस्स केवलस्स दुक्खक्खन्धस्स समुदयो होति। अविज्जाय त्वेव असेसविरागनिरोधा सङ्खारनिरोधो; सङ्खारनिरोधा विञ्ञाणनिरोधो …पे… एवमेतस्स केवलस्स दुक्खक्खन्धस्स निरोधो होतीऽ”ति।

    saṅkhārapaccayā viññāṇaṁ …pe… evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. Avijjāya tveva asesavirāganirodhā saṅkhāranirodho; saṅkhāranirodhā viññāṇanirodho …pe… evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hotī’”ti.

    Choices are a condition for consciousness. … That is how this entire mass of suffering originates. When ignorance fades away and ceases with nothing left over, choices cease. When choices cease, consciousness ceases. … That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.’”

    एवं वुत्ते, लोकायतिको ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम …पे… अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।

    Evaṁ vutte, lokāyatiko brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.

    When he said this, the brahmin cosmologist said to the Buddha, “Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”

    अट्ठमं।
