Stinginess
एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
अथ खो सम्बहुला सतुल्लपकायिका देवतायो अभिक्कन्ताय रत्तिया अभिक्कन्तवण्णा केवलकप्पं जेतवनं ओभासेत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठंसु। एकमन्तं ठिता खो एका देवता भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:
Atha kho sambahulā satullapakāyikā devatāyo abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho ekā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Then, late at night, several glorious deities of the Satullapa Group, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. Standing to one side, one deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:
“मच्छेरा च पमादा च, एवं दानं न दीयति; पुञ्ञं आकङ्खमानेन, देय्यं होति विजानता”ति।
“Maccherā ca pamādā ca, evaṁ dānaṁ na dīyati; Puññaṁ ākaṅkhamānena, deyyaṁ hoti vijānatā”ti.
“Because of stinginess and negligence a gift is not given. Wanting merit, a smart person would give.”
अथ खो अपरा देवता भगवतो सन्तिके इमा गाथायो अभासि:
Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
Then another deity recited these verses in the Buddha’s presence:
“यस्सेव भीतो न ददाति मच्छरी, तदेवाददतो भयं; जिघच्छा च पिपासा च, यस्स भायति मच्छरी; तमेव बालं फुसति, अस्मिं लोके परम्हि च।
“Yasseva bhīto na dadāti maccharī, Tadevādadato bhayaṁ; Jighacchā ca pipāsā ca, Yassa bhāyati maccharī; Tameva bālaṁ phusati, Asmiṁ loke paramhi ca.
“When a miser fails to give because of fear, the very thing they’re afraid of comes to pass. The hunger and thirst that a miser fears hurt the fool in this world and the next.
तस्मा विनेय्य मच्छेरं, दज्जा दानं मलाभिभू; पुञ्ञानि परलोकस्मिं, पतिट्ठा होन्ति पाणिनन्”ति।
Tasmā vineyya maccheraṁ, dajjā dānaṁ malābhibhū; Puññāni paralokasmiṁ, patiṭṭhā honti pāṇinan”ti.
So you should dispel stinginess, overcoming that stain, and give a gift. The good deeds of sentient beings support them in the next world.”
अथ खो अपरा देवता भगवतो सन्तिके इमा गाथायो अभासि:
Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
Then another deity recited these verses in the Buddha’s presence:
“ते मतेसु न मीयन्ति, पन्थानंव सहब्बजं; अप्पस्मिं ये पवेच्छन्ति, एस धम्मो सनन्तनो।
“Te matesu na mīyanti, panthānaṁva sahabbajaṁ; Appasmiṁ ye pavecchanti, esa dhammo sanantano.
“Among the dead they do not die, those who, like fellow travelers on the road, are happy to provide, though they have but little. This is an eternal truth.
अप्पस्मेके पवेच्छन्ति, बहुनेके न दिच्छरे; अप्पस्मा दक्खिणा दिन्ना, सहस्सेन समं मिता”ति।
Appasmeke pavecchanti, bahuneke na dicchare; Appasmā dakkhiṇā dinnā, sahassena samaṁ mitā”ti.
Some who have little are happy to provide, while some who have much don’t wish to give. An offering given from little is multiplied a thousand times.”
अथ खो अपरा देवता भगवतो सन्तिके इमा गाथायो अभासि:
Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
Then another deity recited these verses in the Buddha’s presence:
“दुद्ददं ददमानानं, दुक्करं कम्म कुब्बतं; असन्तो नानुकुब्बन्ति, सतं धम्मो दुरन्वयो।
“Duddadaṁ dadamānānaṁ, dukkaraṁ kamma kubbataṁ; Asanto nānukubbanti, sataṁ dhammo duranvayo.
“Giving what’s hard to give, doing what’s hard to do; the wicked don’t act like this, for the teaching of the good is hard to follow.
तस्मा सतञ्च असतं, नाना होति इतो गति; असन्तो निरयं यन्ति, सन्तो सग्गपरायना”ति।
Tasmā satañca asataṁ, nānā hoti ito gati; Asanto nirayaṁ yanti, santo saggaparāyanā”ti.
That’s why the virtuous and the wicked have different destinations after leaving this place. The wicked go to hell, while the virtuous are bound for heaven.”
अथ खो अपरा देवता भगवतो सन्तिके एतदवोच: “कस्स नु खो, भगवा, सुभासितन्”ति?
Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike etadavoca: “kassa nu kho, bhagavā, subhāsitan”ti?
Then another deity said to the Buddha, “Sir, who has spoken well?”
“सब्बासं वो सुभासितं परियायेन; अपि च ममपि सुणाथ—
“Sabbāsaṁ vo subhāsitaṁ pariyāyena; api ca mamapi suṇātha—
“You’ve all spoken well in your own way. However, listen to me also:
धम्मं चरे योपि समुञ्जकं चरे, दारञ्च पोसं ददमप्पकस्मिं; सतं सहस्सानं सहस्सयागिनं, कलम्पि नाग्घन्ति तथाविधस्स ते”ति।
Dhammaṁ care yopi samuñjakaṁ care, Dārañca posaṁ dadamappakasmiṁ; Sataṁ sahassānaṁ sahassayāginaṁ, Kalampi nāgghanti tathāvidhassa te”ti.
A hundred thousand people
making a thousand sacrifices isn’t worth a fraction of one who lives rightly, wandering for gleanings, or one who supports their partnerfrom what little they have.”
अथ खो अपरा देवता भगवन्तं गाथाय अज्झभासि:
Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then another deity addressed the Buddha in verse:
“केनेस यञ्ञो विपुलो महग्गतो, समेन दिन्नस्स न अग्घमेति; कथं सतं सहस्सानं सहस्सयागिनं, कलम्पि नाग्घन्ति तथाविधस्स ते”ति।
“Kenesa yañño vipulo mahaggato, Samena dinnassa na agghameti; Kathaṁ1 sataṁ sahassānaṁ sahassayāginaṁ, Kalampi nāgghanti tathāvidhassa te”ti.
“Why doesn’t that sacrifice of theirs, so abundant and magnificent, equal the value of a moral person’s gift? How is it that a hundred thousand people
making a thousand sacrifices isn’t worth a fractionof what’s offered by such a person?”
“ददन्ति हेके विसमे निविट्ठा, छेत्वा वधित्वा अथ सोचयित्वा; सा दक्खिणा अस्सुमुखा सदण्डा, समेन दिन्नस्स न अग्घमेति।
“Dadanti heke visame niviṭṭhā, Chetvā vadhitvā atha socayitvā; Sā dakkhiṇā assumukhā sadaṇḍā, Samena dinnassa na agghameti.
“Some give based on immorality—after injuring, killing, and tormenting. Such an offering—tearful, violent—in no way equals the value of a moral person’s gift.
एवं सतं सहस्सानं सहस्सयागिनं, कलम्पि नाग्घन्ति तथाविधस्स ते”ति।
Evaṁ sataṁ sahassānaṁ sahassayāginaṁ, Kalampi nāgghanti tathāvidhassa te”ti.
