Mahāpariḷāhasutta
The Mighty Fever
“अत्थि, भिक्खवे, महापरिळाहो नाम निरयो। तत्थ यं किञ्चि चक्खुना रूपं पस्सति, अनिट्ठरूपञ्ञेव पस्सति नो इट्ठरूपं; अकन्तरूपञ्ञेव पस्सति नो कन्तरूपं; अमनापरूपञ्ञेव पस्सति नो मनापरूपं। यं किञ्चि सोतेन सद्दं सुणाति …पे… यं किञ्चि कायेन फोट्ठब्बं फुसति …पे… यं किञ्चि मनसा धम्मं विजानाति, अनिट्ठरूपञ्ञेव विजानाति नो इट्ठरूपं; अकन्तरूपञ्ञेव विजानाति नो कन्तरूपं; अमनापरूपञ्ञेव विजानाति नो मनापरूपन्”ति।
“Atthi, bhikkhave, mahāpariḷāho nāma nirayo. Tattha yaṁ kiñci cakkhunā rūpaṁ passati, aniṭṭharūpaññeva passati no iṭṭharūpaṁ; akantarūpaññeva passati no kantarūpaṁ; amanāparūpaññeva passati no manāparūpaṁ. Yaṁ kiñci sotena saddaṁ suṇāti …pe… yaṁ kiñci kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṁ phusati …pe… yaṁ kiñci manasā dhammaṁ vijānāti, aniṭṭharūpaññeva vijānāti no iṭṭharūpaṁ; akantarūpaññeva vijānāti no kantarūpaṁ; amanāparūpaññeva vijānāti no manāparūpan”ti.
“Bhikkhus, there is a hell called ‘The Mighty Fever’. There, whatever sight you see with your eye is unlikable, not likable; undesirable, not desirable; unpleasant, not pleasant. Whatever sound you hear … Whatever odor you smell … Whatever flavor you taste … Whatever touch you feel … Whatever thought you know with your mind is unlikable, not likable; undesirable, not desirable; unpleasant, not pleasant.”
एवं वुत्ते, अञ्ञतरो भिक्खु भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “महा वत सो, भन्ते, परिळाहो, सुमहा वत सो, भन्ते, परिळाहो। अत्थि नु खो, भन्ते, एतम्हा परिळाहा अञ्ञो परिळाहो महन्ततरो चेव भयानकतरो चा”ति?
Evaṁ vutte, aññataro bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “mahā vata so, bhante, pariḷāho, sumahā vata so, bhante, pariḷāho. Atthi nu kho, bhante, etamhā pariḷāhā añño pariḷāho mahantataro ceva bhayānakataro cā”ti?
When he said this, one of the bhikkhus said to the Buddha, “Sir, that fever really is mighty, so very mighty. Is there any other fever more mighty and terrifying than this one?”
“अत्थि खो, भिक्खु, एतम्हा परिळाहा अञ्ञो परिळाहो महन्ततरो च भयानकतरो चा”ति।
“Atthi kho, bhikkhu, etamhā pariḷāhā añño pariḷāho mahantataro ca bhayānakataro cā”ti.
“There is, bhikkhu.”
“कतमो पन, भन्ते, एतम्हा परिळाहा अञ्ञो परिळाहो महन्ततरो च भयानकतरो चा”ति?
“Katamo pana, bhante, etamhā pariḷāhā añño pariḷāho mahantataro ca bhayānakataro cā”ti?
“But sir, what is it?”
“ये हि केचि, भिक्खवे, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति यथाभूतं नप्पजानन्ति …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति यथाभूतं नप्पजानन्ति, ते जातिसंवत्तनिकेसु सङ्खारेसु अभिरमन्ति …पे… अभिरता …पे… अभिसङ्खरोन्ति …पे… अभिसङ्खरित्वा जातिपरिळाहेनपि परिडय्हन्ति, जरापरिळाहेनपि परिडय्हन्ति, मरणपरिळाहेनपि परिडय्हन्ति, सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासपरिळाहेनपि परिडय्हन्ति। ते न परिमुच्चन्ति जातिया जराय मरणेन सोकेहि परिदेवेहि दुक्खेहि दोमनस्सेहि उपायासेहि। ‘न परिमुच्चन्ति दुक्खस्माऽति वदामि।
“Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhūtaṁ nappajānanti …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ nappajānanti, te jātisaṁvattanikesu saṅkhāresu abhiramanti …pe… abhiratā …pe… abhisaṅkharonti …pe… abhisaṅkharitvā jātipariḷāhenapi pariḍayhanti, jarāpariḷāhenapi pariḍayhanti, maraṇapariḷāhenapi pariḍayhanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsapariḷāhenapi pariḍayhanti. Te na parimuccanti jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi. ‘Na parimuccanti dukkhasmā’ti vadāmi.
“Bhikkhus, there are ascetics and brahmins who don’t truly understand about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path. They take pleasure in choices that lead to rebirth … They continue to make such choices … Having made such choices, they burn with the fever of rebirth, old age, and death, of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. They’re not freed from rebirth, old age, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. They’re not freed from suffering, I say.
ये च खो केचि, भिक्खवे, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानन्ति …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति यथाभूतं पजानन्ति। ते जातिसंवत्तनिकेसु सङ्खारेसु नाभिरमन्ति …पे… अनभिरता …पे… नाभिसङ्खरोन्ति …पे… अनभिसङ्खरित्वा जातिपरिळाहेनपि न परिडय्हन्ति, जरापरिळाहेनपि न परिडय्हन्ति, मरणपरिळाहेनपि न परिडय्हन्ति, सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासपरिळाहेनपि न परिडय्हन्ति। ते परिमुच्चन्ति जातिया जराय मरणेन सोकेहि परिदेवेहि दुक्खेहि दोमनस्सेहि उपायासेहि। ‘परिमुच्चन्ति दुक्खस्माऽति वदामि।

Te parimuccanti jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi. ‘Parimuccanti dukkhasmā’ti vadāmi.
There are ascetics and brahmins who truly understand about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path. They don’t take pleasure in choices that lead to rebirth … They stop making such choices … Having stopped making such choices, they don’t burn with the fever of rebirth, old age, and death, of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. They’re freed from rebirth, old age, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. They’re freed from suffering, I say.
तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति योगो करणीयो …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति योगो करणीयो”ति।
Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti.
