A Great Man

अथ खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:
Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Sāriputta went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:
“‘महापुरिसो, महापुरिसोऽति, भन्ते, वुच्चति। कित्तावता नु खो, भन्ते, महापुरिसो होती”ति?
“‘mahāpuriso, mahāpuriso’ti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, mahāpuriso hotī”ti?
“Sir, they speak of ‘a great man’. How is a great man defined?”
“विमुत्तचित्तत्ता ख्वाहं, सारिपुत्त, ‘महापुरिसोऽति वदामि। अविमुत्तचित्तत्ता ‘नो महापुरिसोऽति वदामि।
“Vimuttacittattā khvāhaṁ, sāriputta, ‘mahāpuriso’ti vadāmi. Avimuttacittattā ‘no mahāpuriso’ti vadāmi.
“Sāriputta, someone whose mind is free is a great man, I say. If their mind is not free, I say they’re not a great man.
कथञ्च, सारिपुत्त, विमुत्तचित्तो होति? इध, सारिपुत्त, भिक्खु काये कायानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। तस्स काये कायानुपस्सिनो विहरतो चित्तं विरज्जति, विमुच्चति अनुपादाय आसवेहि। वेदनासु …पे… चित्ते …पे… धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। तस्स धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सिनो विहरतो चित्तं विरज्जति, विमुच्चति अनुपादाय आसवेहि। एवं खो, सारिपुत्त, विमुत्तचित्तो होति।
Kathañca, sāriputta, vimuttacitto hoti? Idha, sāriputta, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Tassa kāye kāyānupassino viharato cittaṁ virajjati, vimuccati anupādāya āsavehi. Vedanāsu …pe… citte …pe… dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Tassa dhammesu dhammānupassino viharato cittaṁ virajjati, vimuccati anupādāya āsavehi. Evaṁ kho, sāriputta, vimuttacitto hoti.
And how does someone have a free mind? It’s when a bhikkhu meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. As they meditate observing an aspect of the body, their mind becomes dispassionate, and is freed from the defilements by not grasping. They meditate observing an aspect of feelings … mind … principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. As they meditate observing an aspect of principles, their mind becomes dispassionate, and is freed from the defilements by not grasping. That’s how someone has a free mind.
विमुत्तचित्तत्ता ख्वाहं, सारिपुत्त, ‘महापुरिसोऽति वदामि। अविमुत्तचित्तत्ता ‘नो महापुरिसोऽति वदामी”ति।
Vimuttacittattā khvāhaṁ, sāriputta, ‘mahāpuriso’ti vadāmi. Avimuttacittattā ‘no mahāpuriso’ti vadāmī”ti.
Someone whose mind is free is a great man, I say. If their mind is not free, I say they’re not a great man.”
