    Mahāsālasutta

    A well-to-do brahmin

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    अथ खो अञ्ञतरो ब्राह्मणमहासालो लूखो लूखपावुरणो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि।

    Atha kho aññataro brāhmaṇamahāsālo lūkho lūkhapāvuraṇo1 yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.

    Then a certain well-to-do brahmin, shabby, wearing a shabby cloak, went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

    सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो तं ब्राह्मणमहासालं भगवा एतदवोच: “किं नु त्वं, ब्राह्मण, लूखो लूखपावुरणो”ति?

    Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho taṁ brāhmaṇamahāsālaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “kiṁ nu tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa, lūkho lūkhapāvuraṇo”ti?

    When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him, “Brahmin, why are you so shabby, wearing a shabby cloak?”

    “इध मे, भो गोतम, चत्तारो पुत्ता। ते मं दारेहि सम्पुच्छ घरा निक्खामेन्ती”ति।

    “Idha me, bho gotama, cattāro puttā. Te maṁ dārehi sampuccha gharā nikkhāmentī”ti.

    “Master Gotama, I have four sons. At their wives’ bidding they expelled me from my house.”

    “तेन हि त्वं, ब्राह्मण, इमा गाथायो परियापुणित्वा सभायं महाजनकाये सन्निपतिते पुत्तेसु च सन्निसिन्नेसु भासस्सु:

    “Tena hi tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa, imā gāthāyo pariyāpuṇitvā sabhāyaṁ mahājanakāye sannipatite puttesu ca sannisinnesu bhāsassu:

    “Well then, brahmin, memorize these verses and recite them to your sons when you are all seated in the council hall with a large crowd.

    ‘येहि जातेहि नन्दिस्सं, येसञ्च भवमिच्छिसं; ते मं दारेहि सम्पुच्छ, साव वारेन्ति सूकरं।

    ‘Yehi jātehi nandissaṁ, yesañca bhavamicchisaṁ; Te maṁ dārehi sampuccha, sāva vārenti sūkaraṁ.

    ‘I was overjoyed when they were born, and wished for them the very best. But at their wives’ bidding they chased me out, like hounds after hogs.

    असन्ता किर मं जम्मा, तात ताताति भासरे; रक्खसा पुत्तरूपेन, ते जहन्ति वयोगतं।

    Asantā kira maṁ jammā, tāta tātāti bhāsare; Rakkhasā puttarūpena, te jahanti vayogataṁ.

    It turns out they’re wicked, those nasty men, though they called me their dear old Dad. They’re monsters in the shape of sons, throwing me out as I’ve grown old.

    अस्सोव जिण्णो निब्भोगो, खादना अपनीयति; बालकानं पिता थेरो, परागारेसु भिक्खति।

    Assova jiṇṇo nibbhogo, khādanā apanīyati; Bālakānaṁ pitā thero, parāgāresu bhikkhati.

    Like an old, useless horse led away from its fodder, the elderly father of those kids begs for alms at others’ homes.

    दण्डोव किर मे सेय्यो, यञ्चे पुत्ता अनस्सवा; चण्डम्पि गोणं वारेति, अथो चण्डम्पि कुक्कुरं।

    Daṇḍova kira me seyyo, yañce puttā anassavā; Caṇḍampi goṇaṁ vāreti, atho caṇḍampi kukkuraṁ.

    Even my staff is better than those disobedient sons, for it wards off a wild bull, and even a wild dog.

    अन्धकारे पुरे होति, गम्भीरे गाधमेधति; दण्डस्स आनुभावेन, खलित्वा पतितिट्ठतीऽ”ति।

    Andhakāre pure hoti, gambhīre gādhamedhati; Daṇḍassa ānubhāvena, khalitvā patitiṭṭhatī’”ti.

    It goes before me in the dark; in deep waters it supports me. By the wonderful power of this staff, when I stumble, I stand firm again.’”

    अथ खो सो ब्राह्मणमहासालो भगवतो सन्तिके इमा गाथायो परियापुणित्वा सभायं महाजनकाये सन्निपतिते पुत्तेसु च सन्निसिन्नेसु अभासि:

    Atha kho so brāhmaṇamahāsālo bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo pariyāpuṇitvā sabhāyaṁ mahājanakāye sannipatite puttesu ca sannisinnesu abhāsi:

    Having memorized those verses in the Buddha’s presence, the brahmin recited them to his sons when they were all seated in the council hall with a large crowd. …

    “येहि जातेहि नन्दिस्सं, येसञ्च भवमिच्छिसं; ते मं दारेहि सम्पुच्छ, साव वारेन्ति सूकरं।

    “Yehi jātehi nandissaṁ, yesañca bhavamicchisaṁ; Te maṁ dārehi sampuccha, sāva vārenti sūkaraṁ.

    असन्ता किर मं जम्मा, तात ताताति भासरे; रक्खसा पुत्तरूपेन, ते जहन्ति वयोगतं।

    Asantā kira maṁ jammā, tāta tātāti bhāsare; Rakkhasā puttarūpena, te jahanti vayogataṁ.

    अस्सोव जिण्णो निब्भोगो, खादना अपनीयति; बालकानं पिता थेरो, परागारेसु भिक्खति।

    अथ खो नं ब्राह्मणमहासालं पुत्ता घरं नेत्वा न्हापेत्वा पच्चेकं दुस्सयुगेन अच्छादेसुं। अथ खो सो ब्राह्मणमहासालो एकं दुस्सयुगं आदाय येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो ब्राह्मणमहासालो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Atha kho naṁ brāhmaṇamahāsālaṁ puttā gharaṁ netvā nhāpetvā paccekaṁ dussayugena acchādesuṁ. Atha kho so brāhmaṇamahāsālo ekaṁ dussayugaṁ ādāya yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho brāhmaṇamahāsālo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Then the brahmin’s sons led him back home, bathed him, and each clothed him with a fine pair of garments. Then the brahmin, taking one pair of garments, went to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

    “मयं, भो गोतम, ब्राह्मणा नाम आचरियस्स आचरियधनं परियेसाम। पटिग्गण्हतु मे भवं गोतमो आचरियधनन्”ति। पटिग्गहेसि भगवा अनुकम्पं उपादाय। अथ खो सो ब्राह्मणमहासालो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम …पे… उपासकं मं भवं गोतमो धारेतु अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।

    “mayaṁ, bho gotama, brāhmaṇā nāma ācariyassa ācariyadhanaṁ pariyesāma. Paṭiggaṇhatu me bhavaṁ gotamo ācariyadhanan”ti. Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya. Atha kho so brāhmaṇamahāsālo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.

    “Master Gotama, we brahmins seek a fee for our teacher. May Master Gotama please accept my teacher’s fee!” So the Buddha accepted it out of compassion. Then the well-to-do brahmin said to the Buddha, “Excellent, Master Gotama … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
