Ekaṁ samayaṁ aññataro bhikkhu kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe. Atha kho tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe adhivatthā devatā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā tassa bhikkhuno santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

At one time one of the bhikkhus was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove. The deity haunting that forest approached that bhikkhu and recited this verse in their presence:

“Ṭhite majjhanhike1 kāle, sannisīvesu2 pakkhisu; Saṇateva brahāraññaṁ, taṁ bhayaṁ paṭibhāti maṁ.

“In the still of high noon, when the birds have settled down, the formidable jungle whispers to itself: that seems so scary to me!”

Ṭhite majjhanhike kāle, sannisīvesu pakkhisu; Saṇateva brahāraññaṁ, sā rati paṭibhāti man”ti.

“In the still of high noon, when the birds have settled down, the formidable jungle whispers to itself: that seems so delightful to me!”
