Māra’s Daughters
अथ खो मारो पापिमा भगवतो सन्तिके इमा निब्बेजनीया गाथायो अभासित्वा तम्हा ठाना अपक्कम्म भगवतो अविदूरे पथवियं पल्लङ्केन निसीदि तुण्हीभूतो मङ्कुभूतो पत्तक्खन्धो अधोमुखो पज्झायन्तो अप्पटिभानो कट्ठेन भूमिं विलिखन्तो।
Atha kho māro pāpimā bhagavato santike imā nibbejanīyā gāthāyo abhāsitvā1 tamhā ṭhānā apakkamma bhagavato avidūre pathaviyaṁ pallaṅkena nisīdi tuṇhībhūto maṅkubhūto pattakkhandho adhomukho pajjhāyanto appaṭibhāno2 kaṭṭhena bhūmiṁ vilikhanto.
And then Māra the Wicked, after reciting these verses of disillusionment in the Buddha’s presence, left that place. He sat cross-legged on the ground not far from the Buddha, silent, dismayed, shoulders drooping, downcast, depressed, with nothing to say, scratching the ground with a stick.
अथ खो तण्हा च अरति च रगा च मारधीतरो येन मारो पापिमा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा मारं पापिमन्तं गाथाय अज्झभासिंसु:
Atha kho taṇhā ca arati3 ca ragā4 ca māradhītaro yena māro pāpimā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsiṁsu:
Then Māra’s daughters Craving, Delight, and Lust went up to Māra the Wicked, and addressed him in verse:
“केनासि दुम्मनो तात, पुरिसं कं नु सोचसि; मयं तं रागपासेन, आरञ्ञमिव कुञ्जरं; बन्धित्वा आनयिस्साम, वसगो ते भविस्सती”ति।
“Kenāsi dummano tāta, purisaṁ kaṁ nu socasi; Mayaṁ taṁ rāgapāsena, āraññamiva kuñjaraṁ; Bandhitvā ānayissāma, vasago te bhavissatī”ti.
“Why so downhearted, dad? What man are you upset about? We’ll catch him with the snare of lust, like an elephant in the wild. We’ll tie him up and bring him back—he’ll fall under your sway!”
“अरहं सुगतो लोके, न रागेन सुवानयो; मारधेय्यं अतिक्कन्तो, तस्मा सोचामहं भुसन्”ति।
“Arahaṁ sugato loke, na rāgena suvānayo; Māradheyyaṁ atikkanto, tasmā socāmahaṁ bhusan”ti.
“In this world he is the perfected one, the Holy One. He’s not easily seduced by lust. He has slipped free of Māra’s sway; that’s why I’m so upset.”
अथ खो तण्हा च अरति च रगा च मारधीतरो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं एतदवोचुं: “पादे ते, समण, परिचारेमा”ति। अथ खो भगवा न मनसाकासि, यथा तं अनुत्तरे उपधिसङ्खये विमुत्तो।
Atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: “pāde te, samaṇa, paricāremā”ti. Atha kho bhagavā na manasākāsi, yathā taṁ anuttare upadhisaṅkhaye vimutto.
Then Māra’s daughters Craving, Delight, and Lust went up to the Buddha, and said to him, “We serve at your feet, ascetic.” But the Buddha ignored them, since he was freed with the supreme ending of attachments.
अथ खो तण्हा च अरति च रगा च मारधीतरो एकमन्तं अपक्कम्म एवं समचिन्तेसुं: “उच्चावचा खो पुरिसानं अधिप्पाया। यन्नून मयं एकसतं एकसतं कुमारिवण्णसतं अभिनिम्मिनेय्यामा”ति।
Atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro ekamantaṁ apakkamma evaṁ samacintesuṁ: “uccāvacā kho purisānaṁ adhippāyā. Yannūna mayaṁ ekasataṁ ekasataṁ kumārivaṇṇasataṁ abhinimmineyyāmā”ti.
Then Craving, Delight, and Lust withdrew to one side to think up a plan. “Men have a diverse spectrum of tastes. Why don’t we each manifest in the form of a hundred young maidens?”
अथ खो तण्हा च अरति च रगा च मारधीतरो एकसतं एकसतं कुमारिवण्णसतं अभिनिम्मिनित्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं एतदवोचुं: “पादे ते, समण, परिचारेमा”ति। तम्पि भगवा न मनसाकासि, यथा तं अनुत्तरे उपधिसङ्खये विमुत्तो।
Atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro ekasataṁ ekasataṁ kumārivaṇṇasataṁ abhinimminitvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: “pāde te, samaṇa, paricāremā”ti. Tampi bhagavā na manasākāsi, yathā taṁ anuttare upadhisaṅkhaye vimutto.
So that’s what they did. Then they went up to the Buddha and said to him, “We serve at your feet, ascetic.” But the Buddha still ignored them, since he was freed with the supreme ending of attachments.

अथ खो तण्हा च …पे… यन्नून मयं एकसतं एकसतं सकिं विजातवण्णसतं अभिनिम्मिनेय्यामाति। अथ खो तण्हा च …पे… सकिं विजातवण्णसतं अभिनिम्मिनित्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं एतदवोचुं: “पादे ते, समण, परिचारेमा”ति। तम्पि भगवा न मनसाकासि, यथा तं अनुत्तरे उपधिसङ्खये विमुत्तो। अथ खो तण्हा च …पे… यन्नून मयं एकसतं एकसतं दुविजातवण्णसतं अभिनिम्मिनेय्यामाति। अथ खो तण्हा च …पे… दुविजातवण्णसतं अभिनिम्मिनित्वा येन भगवा …पे… यथा तं अनुत्तरे उपधिसङ्खये विमुत्तो। अथ खो तण्हा च …पे… मज्झिमित्थिवण्णसतं अभिनिम्मिनेय्यामा”ति। अथ खो तण्हा च …पे… मज्झिमित्थिवण्णसतं अभिनिम्मिनित्वा …पे… अनुत्तरे उपधिसङ्खये विमुत्तो। अथ खो तण्हा च …पे… महित्थिवण्णसतं अभिनिम्मिनेय्यामाति। अथ खो तण्हा च …पे… महित्थिवण्णसतं अभिनिम्मिनित्वा येन भगवा …पे… अनुत्तरे उपधिसङ्खये विमुत्तो।
Atha kho taṇhā ca …pe… yannūna mayaṁ ekasataṁ ekasataṁ sakiṁ vijātavaṇṇasataṁ abhinimmineyyāmāti. Atha kho taṇhā ca …pe… sakiṁ vijātavaṇṇasataṁ abhinimminitvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: “pāde te, samaṇa, paricāremā”ti. Tampi bhagavā na manasākāsi, yathā taṁ anuttare upadhisaṅkhaye vimutto. Atha kho taṇhā ca …pe… yannūna mayaṁ ekasataṁ ekasataṁ duvijātavaṇṇasataṁ abhinimmineyyāmāti. Atha kho taṇhā ca …pe… duvijātavaṇṇasataṁ abhinimminitvā yena bhagavā …pe… yathā taṁ anuttare upadhisaṅkhaye vimutto. Atha kho taṇhā ca …pe… majjhimitthivaṇṇasataṁ abhinimmineyyāmā”ti. Atha kho taṇhā ca …pe… majjhimitthivaṇṇasataṁ abhinimminitvā …pe… anuttare upadhisaṅkhaye vimutto. Atha kho taṇhā ca …pe… mahitthivaṇṇasataṁ abhinimmineyyāmāti. Atha kho taṇhā ca …pe… mahitthivaṇṇasataṁ abhinimminitvā yena bhagavā …pe… anuttare upadhisaṅkhaye vimutto.
Then Craving, Delight, and Lust … each manifested in the form of a hundred women who have given birth once … women who have given birth twice … middle-aged women … old women … But the Buddha still ignored them, since he was freed with the supreme ending of attachments.
अथ खो तण्हा च अरति च रगा च मारधीतरो एकमन्तं अपक्कम्म एतदवोचुं: “सच्चं किर नो पिता अवोच:
Atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro ekamantaṁ apakkamma etadavocuṁ: “saccaṁ kira no pitā avoca:
Then Craving, Delight, and Lust withdrew to one side and said, “What our father said is true:
‘अरहं सुगतो लोके, न रागेन सुवानयो; मारधेय्यं अतिक्कन्तो, तस्मा सोचामहं भुसन्ऽति।
‘Arahaṁ sugato loke, na rāgena suvānayo; Māradheyyaṁ atikkanto, tasmā socāmahaṁ bhusan’ti.
‘In this world he is the perfected one, the Holy One. He’s not easily seduced by lust. He has slipped free of Māra’s sway; that’s why I’m so upset.’
यञ्हि मयं समणं वा ब्राह्मणं वा अवीतरागं इमिना उपक्कमेन उपक्कमेय्याम हदयं वास्स फलेय्य, उण्हं लोहितं वा मुखतो उग्गच्छेय्य, उम्मादं वा पापुणेय्य चित्तक्खेपं वा। सेय्यथा वा पन नळो हरितो लुतो उस्सुस्सति विसुस्सति मिलायति; एवमेव उस्सुस्सेय्य विसुस्सेय्य मिलायेय्या”ति।
Yañhi mayaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā avītarāgaṁ iminā upakkamena upakkameyyāma hadayaṁ vāssa phaleyya, uṇhaṁ lohitaṁ vā mukhato uggaccheyya, ummādaṁ vā pāpuṇeyya cittakkhepaṁ vā. Seyyathā vā pana naḷo harito luto ussussati visussati milāyati; evameva ussusseyya visusseyya milāyeyyā”ti.
For if we had come on to any ascetic or brahmin like this who was not free of lust, his heart would explode, or he’d spew hot blood from his mouth, or he’d go mad and lose his mind. He’d dry up, wither away, and shrivel up like a green reed that was mowed down.”
अथ खो तण्हा च अरति च रगा च मारधीतरो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठंसु। एकमन्तं ठिता खो तण्हा मारधीता भगवन्तं गाथाय अज्झभासि:
Atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho taṇhā māradhītā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then Māra’s daughters Craving, Delight, and Lust went up to the Buddha, and stood to one side. Māra’s daughter Craving addressed the Buddha in verse:
“सोकावतिण्णो नु वनम्हि झायसि, वित्तं नु जीनो उद पत्थयानो; आगुं नु गामस्मिमकासि किञ्चि, कस्मा जनेन न करोसि सक्खिं; सक्खी न सम्पज्जति केनचि ते”ति।
“Sokāvatiṇṇo nu vanamhi jhāyasi, Vittaṁ nu jīno uda patthayāno; Āguṁ nu gāmasmimakāsi kiñci, Kasmā janena na karosi sakkhiṁ; Sakkhī na sampajjati kenaci te”ti.
“Are you swamped by sorrow
that you meditate in the forest? Have you lost a fortune, or do you long for one? Or perhaps you’ve committedsome crime in the village? Why don’t you get too close to people? And why does no-one get close to you?”
“अत्थस्स पत्तिं हदयस्स सन्तिं, जेत्वान सेनं पियसातरूपं; एकोहं झायं सुखमनुबोधिं, तस्मा जनेन न करोमि सक्खिं; सक्खी न सम्पज्जति केनचि मे”ति।
“Atthassa pattiṁ hadayassa santiṁ, Jetvāna senaṁ piyasātarūpaṁ; Ekohaṁ5 jhāyaṁ sukhamanubodhiṁ, Tasmā janena na karomi sakkhiṁ; Sakkhī na sampajjati kenaci me”ti.
“I’ve reached the goal, peace of heart. Having conquered the army
अथ खो अरति मारधीता भगवन्तं गाथाय अज्झभासि:
Atha kho arati6 māradhītā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then Māra’s daughter Delight addressed the Buddha in verse:
“कथंविहारीबहुलोध भिक्खु, पञ्चोघतिण्णो अतरीध छट्ठं; कथं झायिं बहुलं कामसञ्ञा, परिबाहिरा होन्ति अलद्ध यो तन्”ति।
“Kathaṁvihārībahulodha bhikkhu, Pañcoghatiṇṇo atarīdha chaṭṭhaṁ; Kathaṁ jhāyiṁ7 bahulaṁ kāmasaññā, Paribāhirā honti aladdha yo tan”ti.
“How does a bhikkhu who has crossed five floods usually meditate here while crossing the sixth? How do they usually practice jhāna so that sensual perceptions are kept out and don’t get hold of them?”
“पस्सद्धकायो सुविमुत्तचित्तो, असङ्खरानो सतिमा अनोको; अञ्ञाय धम्मं अवितक्कझायी, न कुप्पति न सरति न थिनो।
“Passaddhakāyo suvimuttacitto, Asaṅkharāno satimā anoko; Aññāya dhammaṁ avitakkajhāyī, Na kuppati na sarati na thino.
“With tranquil body and mind well freed, without making plans, mindful, homeless; understanding the teaching, they practice jhāna without placing the mind; they’re not shaking or drifting or rigid.
एवंविहारीबहुलोध भिक्खु, पञ्चोघतिण्णो अतरीध छट्ठं; एवं झायिं बहुलं कामसञ्ञा, परिबाहिरा होन्ति अलद्ध यो तन्”ति।
Evaṁvihārībahulodha bhikkhu, Pañcoghatiṇṇo atarīdha chaṭṭhaṁ; Evaṁ jhāyiṁ bahulaṁ kāmasaññā, Paribāhirā honti aladdha yo tan”ti.
That’s how a bhikkhu who has crossed five floods usually meditates here while crossing the sixth. That’s how they usually practice jhāna so that sensual perceptions are kept out and don’t get hold of them.”
अथ खो रगा मारधीता भगवतो सन्तिके गाथाय अज्झभासि:
Atha kho ragā8 māradhītā bhagavato santike gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then Māra’s daughter Lust addressed the Buddha in verse:
“अच्छेज्ज तण्हं गणसङ्घचारी, अद्धा चरिस्सन्ति बहू च सद्धा; बहुं वतायं जनतं अनोको, अच्छेज्ज नेस्सति मच्चुराजस्स पारन्”ति।
“Acchejja taṇhaṁ gaṇasaṅghacārī, Addhā carissanti bahū ca saddhā; Bahuṁ vatāyaṁ janataṁ anoko, Acchejja nessati maccurājassa pāran”ti.
“He lives with his community after cutting off craving, and many of the faithful will cross over for sure. Alas, this homeless one will snatch many men away, and lead them past the King of Death!”
“नयन्ति वे महावीरा, सद्धम्मेन तथागता; धम्मेन नयमानानं, का उसूया विजानतन्”ति।
“Nayanti ve mahāvīrā, saddhammena tathāgatā; Dhammena nayamānānaṁ, kā usūyā vijānatan”ti.
“The great heroes they lead by means of the true teaching. When the Realized Ones are leading by the teaching, how could anyone who knows be jealous?”
अथ खो तण्हा च अरति च रगा च मारधीतरो येन मारो पापिमा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु। अद्दसा खो मारो पापिमा तण्हञ्च अरतिञ्च रगञ्च मारधीतरो दूरतोव आगच्छन्तियो। दिस्वान गाथाहि अज्झभासि:
Atha kho taṇhā ca arati ca ragā ca māradhītaro yena māro pāpimā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu. Addasā kho māro pāpimā taṇhañca aratiñca ragañca māradhītaro dūratova āgacchantiyo. Disvāna gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:
Then Māra’s daughters Craving, Delight, and Lust went up to Māra the Wicked. Māra the Wicked saw them coming off in the distance, and addressed them in verse:
“बाला कुमुदनाळेहि, पब्बतं अभिमत्थथ; गिरिं नखेन खनथ, अयो दन्तेहि खादथ।
“Bālā kumudanāḷehi, pabbataṁ abhimatthatha; Giriṁ nakhena khanatha, ayo dantehi khādatha.
“Fools! You drill into a mountain with lotus stalks! You dig up a hill with your nails! You chew iron with your teeth!
सेलंव सिरसूहच्च, पाताले गाधमेसथ; खाणुंव उरसासज्ज, निब्बिज्जापेथ गोतमा”ति।
Selaṁva sirasūhacca, pātāle gādhamesatha; Khāṇuṁva urasāsajja, nibbijjāpetha gotamā”ti.
You seek a footing in the deeps, as it were, while lifting a rock with your head! After attacking a stump with your breast, as it were, you leave Gotama disappointed.”
“दद्दल्लमाना आगञ्छुं, तण्हा च अरती रगा; ता तत्थ पनुदी सत्था, तूलं भट्ठंव मालुतो”ति।
“Daddallamānā āgañchuṁ, taṇhā ca aratī ragā; Tā tattha panudī satthā, tūlaṁ bhaṭṭhaṁva māluto”ti.
“They came in their splendor—Craving, Delight, and Lust. But the Teacher brushed them off right there, like the breeze, a fallen tuft.”
ततियो वग्गो।
Tatiyo vaggo.
तस्सुद्दानं
Tassuddānaṁ
सम्बहुला समिद्धि च, गोधिकं सत्तवस्सानि; धीतरं देसितं बुद्ध, सेट्ठेन इमं मारपञ्चकन्ति।
Sambahulā samiddhi ca, Godhikaṁ sattavassāni; Dhītaraṁ desitaṁ buddha, Seṭṭhena imaṁ mārapañcakanti.
मारसंयुत्तं समत्तं।
Mārasaṁyuttaṁ samattaṁ.
