    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति पुब्बारामे मिगारमातुपासादे। तेन खो पन समयेन सम्बहुला भिक्खू हेट्ठामिगारमातुपासादे विहरन्ति उद्धता उन्नळा चपला मुखरा विकिण्णवाचा मुट्ठस्सतिनो असम्पजाना असमाहिता भन्तचित्ता पाकतिन्द्रिया।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde. Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā bhikkhū heṭṭhāmigāramātupāsāde viharanti uddhatā unnaḷā capalā mukharā vikiṇṇavācā muṭṭhassatino asampajānā asamāhitā bhantacittā1 pākatindriyā.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in the Eastern Monastery, the stilt longhouse of Migāra’s mother. Now at that time several bhikkhus were staying beneath the longhouse. They were restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, loose-tongued, unmindful, lacking situational awareness and immersion, with straying minds and undisciplined faculties.

    अथ खो भगवा आयस्मन्तं महामोग्गल्लानं आमन्तेसि: “एते खो, मोग्गल्लान, सब्रह्मचारिनो हेट्ठामिगारमातुपासादे विहरन्ति उद्धता उन्नळा चपला मुखरा विकिण्णवाचा मुट्ठस्सतिनो असम्पजाना असमाहिता भन्तचित्ता पाकतिन्द्रिया। गच्छ, मोग्गल्लान, ते भिक्खू संवेजेही”ति।

    Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ mahāmoggallānaṁ āmantesi: “ete kho, moggallāna, sabrahmacārino heṭṭhāmigāramātupāsāde viharanti uddhatā unnaḷā capalā mukharā vikiṇṇavācā muṭṭhassatino asampajānā asamāhitā bhantacittā pākatindriyā. Gaccha, moggallāna, te bhikkhū saṁvejehī”ti.

    Then the Buddha addressed Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, “These spiritual companions of yours staying beneath the longhouse are restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, loose-tongued, unmindful, lacking situational awareness and immersion, with wandering mind and undisciplined faculties. Go, Moggallāna, and strike awe in those bhikkhus!”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति खो आयस्मा महामोग्गल्लानो भगवतो पटिस्सुत्वा तथारूपं इद्धाभिसङ्खारं अभिसङ्खारेसि यथा पादङ्गुट्ठकेन मिगारमातुपासादं सङ्कम्पेसि सम्पकम्पेसि सम्पचालेसि। अथ खो ते भिक्खू संविग्गा लोमहट्ठजाता एकमन्तं अट्ठंसु:

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhagavato paṭissutvā tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāresi2 yathā pādaṅguṭṭhakena migāramātupāsādaṁ saṅkampesi sampakampesi sampacālesi. Atha kho te bhikkhū saṁviggā lomahaṭṭhajātā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu:

    “Yes, sir,” replied Mahāmoggallāna. Then he used his psychic power to make the longhouse shake and rock and tremble with his toe. Then those bhikkhus stood to one side, shocked and awestruck.

    “अच्छरियं वत भो, अब्भुतं वत भो। निवातञ्च वत अयञ्च मिगारमातुपासादो गम्भीरनेमो सुनिखातो अचलो असम्पकम्पी, अथ च पन सङ्कम्पितो सम्पकम्पितो सम्पचालितो”ति।

    “acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho. Nivātañca vata ayañca migāramātupāsādo gambhīranemo sunikhāto acalo asampakampī, atha ca pana saṅkampito sampakampito sampacālito”ti.

    “Oh, how incredible, how amazing! There’s no wind at all; and this stilt longhouse of Migāra’s mother has deep foundations. It’s firmly embedded, imperturbable and unshakable. And yet it shakes and rocks and trembles!”

    अथ खो भगवा येन ते भिक्खू तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा ते भिक्खू भगवा एतदवोच:

    Atha kho bhagavā yena te bhikkhū tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā te bhikkhū bhagavā etadavoca:

    Then the Buddha went up to those bhikkhus and said:

    “किं नु तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, संविग्गा लोमहट्ठजाता एकमन्तं ठिता”ति?

    “kiṁ nu tumhe, bhikkhave, saṁviggā lomahaṭṭhajātā ekamantaṁ ṭhitā”ti?

    “Why do you, bhikkhus, stand to one side, shocked and awestruck?”

    “अच्छरियं, भन्ते, अब्भुतं भन्ते। निवातञ्च वत अयञ्च मिगारमातुपासादो गम्भीरनेमो सुनिखातो अचलो असम्पकम्पी, अथ च पन सङ्कम्पितो सम्पकम्पितो सम्पचालितो”ति।

    “Acchariyaṁ, bhante, abbhutaṁ bhante. Nivātañca vata ayañca migāramātupāsādo gambhīranemo sunikhāto acalo asampakampī, atha ca pana saṅkampito sampakampito sampacālito”ti.

    “It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing! There’s no wind at all; and this stilt longhouse of Migāra’s mother has deep foundations. It’s firmly embedded, imperturbable and unshakable. And yet it shakes and rocks and trembles!”

    “तुम्हेव खो, भिक्खवे, संवेजेतुकामेन मोग्गल्लानेन भिक्खुना पादङ्गुट्ठकेन मिगारमातुपासादो, सङ्कम्पितो सम्पकम्पितो सम्पचालितो।

    “Tumheva kho, bhikkhave, saṁvejetukāmena moggallānena bhikkhunā pādaṅguṭṭhakena migāramātupāsādo, saṅkampito sampakampito sampacālito.

    “Wanting to strike awe in you, the bhikkhu Moggallāna made the longhouse shake and rock and tremble with his toe.

    तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, कतमेसं धम्मानं भावितत्ता बहुलीकतत्ता मोग्गल्लानो भिक्खु एवंमहिद्धिको एवंमहानुभावो”ति?

    Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, katamesaṁ dhammānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā moggallāno bhikkhu evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo”ti?

    What do you think, bhikkhus? What things has the bhikkhu Moggallāna developed and cultivated so as to have such power and might?”

    “भगवंमूलका नो, भन्ते, धम्मा, भगवंनेत्तिका भगवंपटिसरणा। साधु वत, भन्ते, भगवन्तंयेव पटिभातु एतस्स भासितस्स अत्थो। भगवतो सुत्वा भिक्खू धारेस्सन्ती”ति।

    “Bhagavaṁmūlakā no, bhante, dhammā, bhagavaṁnettikā bhagavaṁpaṭisaraṇā. Sādhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaṁyeva paṭibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvā bhikkhū dhāressantī”ti.

    “Our teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The bhikkhus will listen and remember it.”

    “तेन हि, भिक्खवे, सुणाथ। चतुन्नं खो, भिक्खवे, इद्धिपादानं भावितत्ता बहुलीकतत्ता मोग्गल्लानो भिक्खु एवंमहिद्धिको एवंमहानुभावो। कतमेसं चतुन्नं? इध, भिक्खवे, मोग्गल्लानो भिक्खु छन्दसमाधिप्पधानसङ्खारसमन्नागतं इद्धिपादं भावेति, वीरियसमाधि …पे… चित्तसमाधि … वीमंसासमाधिप्पधानसङ्खारसमन्नागतं इद्धिपादं भावेति—इति मे वीमंसा न च अतिलीना भविस्सति, न च अतिप्पग्गहिता भविस्सति; न च अज्झत्तं सङ्खित्ता भविस्सति, न च बहिद्धा विक्खित्ता भविस्सति। पच्छापुरेसञ्ञी च विहरति—यथा पुरे तथा पच्छा, यथा पच्छा तथा पुरे; यथा अधो तथा उद्धं, यथा उद्धं तथा अधो; यथा दिवा तथा रत्तिं, यथा रत्तिं तथा दिवा। इति विवटेन चेतसा अपरियोनद्धेन सप्पभासं चित्तं भावेति। इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, चतुन्नं इद्धिपादानं भावितत्ता बहुलीकतत्ता मोग्गल्लानो भिक्खु एवंमहिद्धिको एवंमहानुभावो।

    “Tena hi, bhikkhave, suṇātha. Catunnaṁ kho, bhikkhave, iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā moggallāno bhikkhu evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo. Katamesaṁ catunnaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, moggallāno bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti, vīriyasamādhi …pe… cittasamādhi … vīmaṁsāsamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti—iti me vīmaṁsā na ca atilīnā bhavissati, na ca atippaggahitā bhavissati; na ca ajjhattaṁ saṅkhittā bhavissati, na ca bahiddhā vikkhittā bhavissati. Pacchāpuresaññī ca viharati—yathā pure tathā pacchā, yathā pacchā tathā pure; yathā adho tathā uddhaṁ, yathā uddhaṁ tathā adho; yathā divā tathā rattiṁ, yathā rattiṁ tathā divā. Iti vivaṭena cetasā apariyonaddhena sappabhāsaṁ cittaṁ bhāveti. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā moggallāno bhikkhu evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo.

    “Well then, bhikkhus, listen. The bhikkhu Moggallāna has become so powerful and mighty by developing and cultivating the four bases of psychic power. What four? Moggallāna develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm … energy … mental development … inquiry, and active effort. He thinks: ‘My inquiry won’t be too lax or too tense. And it’ll be neither constricted internally nor scattered externally.’ And he meditates perceiving continuity: as before, so after; as after, so before; as below, so above; as above, so below; as by day, so by night; as by night, so by day. And so, with an open and unenveloped heart, he develops a mind that’s full of radiance. The bhikkhu Moggallāna has become so powerful and mighty by developing and cultivating these four bases of psychic power.

    इमेसञ्च पन, भिक्खवे, चतुन्नं इद्धिपादानं भावितत्ता बहुलीकतत्ता मोग्गल्लानो भिक्खु अनेकविहितं इद्धिविधं पच्चनुभोति …पे… याव ब्रह्मलोकापि कायेन वसं वत्तेति …पे…

    Imesañca pana, bhikkhave, catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā moggallāno bhikkhu anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti …pe…

    And by developing and cultivating these four bases of psychic power, the bhikkhu Moggallāna wields the many kinds of psychic power … controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm. …

    इमेसञ्च पन, भिक्खवे, चतुन्नं इद्धिपादानं भावितत्ता बहुलीकतत्ता मोग्गल्लानो भिक्खु आसवानं खया अनासवं चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरती”ति।

    imesañca pana, bhikkhave, catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā moggallāno bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatī”ti.

    And by developing and cultivating these four bases of psychic power, the bhikkhu Moggallāna realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And he lives having realized it with his own insight due to the ending of defilements.”
