    Nakhasikhāsutta

    A Fingernail

    अथ खो भगवा परित्तं नखसिखायं पंसुं आरोपेत्वा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, कतमं नु खो बहुतरं—यो वायं मया परित्तो नखसिखायं पंसु आरोपितो, अयं वा महापथवी”ति?

    Atha kho bhagavā parittaṁ nakhasikhāyaṁ paṁsuṁ āropetvā bhikkhū āmantesi: “Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, katamaṁ nu kho bahutaraṁ—yo vāyaṁ mayā paritto nakhasikhāyaṁ paṁsu āropito, ayaṁ vā mahāpathavī”ti?

    Then the Buddha, picking up a little bit of dirt under his fingernail, addressed the bhikkhus: “What do you think, bhikkhus? Which is more: the little bit of dirt under my fingernail, or this great earth?”

    “एतदेव, भन्ते, बहुतरं यदिदं—महापथवी; अप्पमत्तकायं भगवता परित्तो नखसिखायं पंसु आरोपितो। सङ्खम्पि न उपेति, उपनिधम्पि न उपेति, कलभागम्पि न उपेति महापथविं उपनिधाय भगवता परित्तो नखसिखायं पंसु आरोपितो”ति।

    “Etadeva, bhante, bahutaraṁ yadidaṁ—mahāpathavī; appamattakāyaṁ bhagavatā paritto nakhasikhāyaṁ paṁsu āropito. Saṅkhampi na upeti, upanidhampi na upeti, kalabhāgampi na upeti mahāpathaviṁ upanidhāya bhagavatā paritto nakhasikhāyaṁ paṁsu āropito”ti.

    “Sir, the great earth is certainly more. The little bit of dirt under your fingernail is tiny. Compared to the great earth, it doesn’t count, there’s no comparison, it’s not worth a fraction.”

    “एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अरियसावकस्स दिट्ठिसम्पन्नस्स पुग्गलस्स अभिसमेताविनो एतदेव बहुतरं दुक्खं यदिदं परिक्खीणं परियादिन्नं; अप्पमत्तकं अवसिट्ठं। सङ्खम्पि न उपेति, उपनिधम्पि न उपेति, कलभागम्पि न उपेति पुरिमं दुक्खक्खन्धं परिक्खीणं परियादिन्नं उपनिधाय यदिदं सत्तक्खत्तुपरमता; यो ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति।

    “Evameva kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa diṭṭhisampannassa puggalassa abhisametāvino etadeva bahutaraṁ dukkhaṁ yadidaṁ parikkhīṇaṁ pariyādinnaṁ; appamattakaṁ avasiṭṭhaṁ. Saṅkhampi na upeti, upanidhampi na upeti, kalabhāgampi na upeti purimaṁ dukkhakkhandhaṁ parikkhīṇaṁ pariyādinnaṁ upanidhāya yadidaṁ sattakkhattuparamatā; yo ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.

    “In the same way, for a person with comprehension, a noble disciple accomplished in view, the suffering that’s over and done with is more, what’s left is tiny. Compared to the mass of suffering in the past that’s over and done with, it doesn’t count, there’s no comparison, it’s not worth a fraction, since there are at most seven more lives. Such a person truly understands about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.

    तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति योगो करणीयो …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति योगो करणीयो”ति।

    Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti.

    That’s why you should practice meditation …”
