    Nāmarūpasutta

    Name and Form

    सावत्थियं विहरति।

    Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

    At Sāvatthī.

    “संयोजनियेसु, भिक्खवे, धम्मेसु अस्सादानुपस्सिनो विहरतो नामरूपस्स अवक्कन्ति होति। नामरूपपच्चया सळायतनं …पे… एवमेतस्स केवलस्स दुक्खक्खन्धस्स समुदयो होति।

    “Saṁyojaniyesu, bhikkhave, dhammesu assādānupassino viharato nāmarūpassa avakkanti hoti. Nāmarūpapaccayā saḷāyatanaṁ …pe… evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti.

    “There are things that are prone to being fettered. When you concentrate on the gratification provided by these things, name and form are conceived. Name and form are conditions for the six sense fields. … That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

    सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, महारुक्खो। तस्स यानि चेव मूलानि अधोगमानि, यानि च तिरियङ्गमानि, सब्बानि तानि उद्धं ओजं अभिहरन्ति। एवञ्हि सो, भिक्खवे, महारुक्खो तदाहारो तदुपादानो चिरं दीघमद्धानं तिट्ठेय्य।

    Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, mahārukkho. Tassa yāni ceva mūlāni adhogamāni, yāni ca tiriyaṅgamāni, sabbāni tāni uddhaṁ ojaṁ abhiharanti. Evañhi so, bhikkhave, mahārukkho tadāhāro tadupādāno ciraṁ dīghamaddhānaṁ tiṭṭheyya.

    Suppose there was a great tree. And its roots going downwards and across all draw the sap upwards. Fueled and sustained by that, the great tree would stand for a long time.

    एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, संयोजनियेसु धम्मेसु अस्सादानुपस्सिनो विहरतो नामरूपस्स अवक्कन्ति होति …पे…।

    Evameva kho, bhikkhave, saṁyojaniyesu dhammesu assādānupassino viharato nāmarūpassa avakkanti hoti …pe….

    In the same way, there are things that are prone to being fettered. When you concentrate on the gratification provided by these things, name and form are conceived. …

    Saṁyojaniyesu, bhikkhave, dhammesu ādīnavānupassino viharato nāmarūpassa avakkanti na hoti. Nāmarūpanirodhā saḷāyatananirodho …pe… evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti.

    There are things that are prone to being fettered. When you concentrate on the drawbacks of these things, name and form are not conceived. When name and form cease, the six sense fields cease. … That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.

    सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, महारुक्खो। अथ पुरिसो आगच्छेय्य कुद्दालपिटकं आदाय …पे… आयतिं अनुप्पादधम्मो।

    Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, mahārukkho. Atha puriso āgaccheyya kuddālapiṭakaṁ ādāya …pe… āyatiṁ anuppādadhammo.

    Suppose there was a great tree. Then a person comes along with a spade and basket. … In this way the great tree is cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, and unable to arise in the future.

    एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, संयोजनियेसु धम्मेसु आदीनवानुपस्सिनो विहरतो नामरूपस्स अवक्कन्ति न होति। नामरूपनिरोधा सळायतननिरोधो …पे… एवमेतस्स केवलस्स दुक्खक्खन्धस्स निरोधो होती”ति।
