Nānātitthiyasāvakasutta
The Disciples of Various Monastics of Other Religions
एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति वेळुवने कलन्दकनिवापे।
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.
अथ खो सम्बहुला नानातित्थियसावका देवपुत्ता असमो च सहलि च नीको च आकोटको च वेगब्भरि च माणवगामियो च अभिक्कन्ताय रत्तिया अभिक्कन्तवण्णा केवलकप्पं वेळुवनं ओभासेत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठंसु।
Atha kho sambahulā nānātitthiyasāvakā devaputtā asamo ca sahali1 ca nīko2 ca ākoṭako ca vegabbhari ca3 māṇavagāmiyo ca abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ veḷuvanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu.
Then, late at night, several glorious gods lit up the entire Bamboo Grove. They were Asama, Sahalī, Niṅka, Ākoṭaka, Vetambarī, and Māṇavagāmiya, and all of them were disciples of various monastics of other religions. They went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side.
एकमन्तं ठितो खो असमो देवपुत्तो पूरणं कस्सपं आरब्भ भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:
Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho asamo devaputto pūraṇaṁ kassapaṁ ārabbha bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Standing to one side, the god Asama recited this verse about Pūraṇa Kassapa in the Buddha’s presence:
“इध छिन्दितमारिते, हतजानीसु कस्सपो; न पापं समनुपस्सति, पुञ्ञं वा पन अत्तनो; स वे विस्सासमाचिक्खि, सत्था अरहति माननन्”ति।
“Idha chinditamārite, Hatajānīsu kassapo; Na pāpaṁ samanupassati, Puññaṁ vā pana attano; Sa ve vissāsamācikkhi, Satthā arahati mānanan”ti.
“In injuring and killing here, in beating and extortion, Kassapa saw no evil, nor any merit for oneself. What he taught should truly be trusted, he’s worthy of esteem as Teacher.”
अथ खो सहलि देवपुत्तो मक्खलिं गोसालं आरब्भ भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:
Atha kho sahali devaputto makkhaliṁ gosālaṁ ārabbha bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Then the god Sahalī recited this verse about the bamboo-staffed ascetic Gosāla in the Buddha’s presence:
“तपोजिगुच्छाय सुसंवुतत्तो, वाचं पहाय कलहं जनेन; समोसवज्जा विरतो सच्चवादी, न हि नून तादिसं करोति पापन्”ति।
“Tapojigucchāya susaṁvutatto, Vācaṁ pahāya kalahaṁ janena; Samosavajjā virato saccavādī, Na hi nūna tādisaṁ karoti4 pāpan”ti.
“Through fervent mortification in disgust of sin he became well restrained. He gave up arguing with people. Refraining from false speech, he spoke the truth. Surely such a man does no wrong!”
अथ खो नीको देवपुत्तो निगण्ठं नाटपुत्तं आरब्भ भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:
Atha kho nīko devaputto nigaṇṭhaṁ nāṭaputtaṁ ārabbha bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Then the god Niṅka recited this verse about the Jain ascetic of the Ñātika clan in the Buddha’s presence:
“जेगुच्छी निपको भिक्खु, चातुयामसुसंवुतो; दिट्ठं सुतञ्च आचिक्खं, न हि नून किब्बिसी सिया”ति।
“Jegucchī nipako bhikkhu, Cātuyāmasusaṁvuto; Diṭṭhaṁ sutañca ācikkhaṁ, Na hi nūna kibbisī siyā”ti.
“Disgusted at sin, an alert bhikkhu, well restrained in the four controls; explaining what is seen and heard: surely he can be no sinner!”
अथ खो आकोटको देवपुत्तो नानातित्थिये आरब्भ भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:
Atha kho ākoṭako devaputto nānātitthiye ārabbha bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Then the god Ākoṭaka recited this verse about various sectarian teachers in the Buddha’s presence:
“पकुधको कातियानो निगण्ठो, ये चापिमे मक्खलिपूरणासे; गणस्स सत्थारो सामञ्ञप्पत्ता, न हि नून ते सप्पुरिसेहि दूरे”ति।
“Pakudhako kātiyāno nigaṇṭho, Ye cāpime makkhalipūraṇāse; Gaṇassa satthāro sāmaññappattā, Na hi nūna te sappurisehi dūre”ti.
“Pakudhaka, Kātiyāna, and Nigaṇṭha, as well as this bamboo-staffed ascetic and Pūraṇa: Teachers of communities, attained ascetics, surely they weren’t far from truly good men!”
अथ खो वेगब्भरि देवपुत्तो आकोटकं देवपुत्तं गाथाय पच्चभासि:
Atha kho vegabbhari devaputto ākoṭakaṁ devaputtaṁ gāthāya paccabhāsi:
Then the god Vetambarī replied to the god Ākoṭaka in verse:
“सहाचरितेन छवो सिगालो, न कोत्थुको सीहसमो कदाचि; नग्गो मुसावादी गणस्स सत्था, सङ्कस्सराचारो न सतं सरिक्खो”ति।
“Sahācaritena5 chavo sigālo, Na kotthuko sīhasamo kadāci; Naggo musāvādī gaṇassa satthā, Saṅkassarācāro na sataṁ sarikkho”ti.
“Though the wretched jackal howls along, it never equals the lion. A naked liar with suspicious conduct, though they teach a community, is not like the good.”
अथ खो मारो पापिमा बेगब्भरिं देवपुत्तं अन्वाविसित्वा भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:
Atha kho māro pāpimā begabbhariṁ devaputtaṁ anvāvisitvā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Then Māra the Wicked took possession of the god Vetambarī and recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:
“तपोजिगुच्छाय आयुत्ता, पालयं पविवेकियं; रूपे च ये निविट्ठासे, देवलोकाभिनन्दिनो; ते वे सम्मानुसासन्ति, परलोकाय मातिया”ति।
“Tapojigucchāya āyuttā, pālayaṁ pavivekiyaṁ; Rūpe ca ye niviṭṭhāse, devalokābhinandino; Te ve sammānusāsanti, paralokāya mātiyā”ti.
“Those dedicated to mortification in disgust of sin, safeguarding their seclusion, attached to form, they rejoice in the heavenly realm. Indeed, those mortals give correct instructions regarding the next world.”
अथ खो भगवा “मारो अयं पापिमा” इति विदित्वा, मारं पापिमन्तं गाथाय पच्चभासि:
Atha kho bhagavā “māro ayaṁ pāpimā” iti viditvā, māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāya paccabhāsi:
Then the Buddha, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, replied to him in verse:
“ये केचि रूपा इध वा हुरं वा, ये चन्तलिक्खस्मिं पभासवण्णा; सब्बेव ते ते नमुचिप्पसत्था, आमिसंव मच्छानं वधाय खित्ता”ति।
“Ye keci rūpā idha vā huraṁ vā, Ye cantalikkhasmiṁ pabhāsavaṇṇā; Sabbeva te te namucippasatthā, Āmisaṁva macchānaṁ vadhāya khittā”ti.
“Whatever forms there are
in this world or the world beyond, and those of shining beauty in the sky, all of these you praise, Namuci, like bait tossed out for catching fish.”
अथ खो माणवगामियो देवपुत्तो भगवन्तं आरब्भ भगवतो सन्तिके इमा गाथायो अभासि:
Atha kho māṇavagāmiyo devaputto bhagavantaṁ ārabbha bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
Then the god Māṇavagāmiya recited this verse about the Buddha in his presence:
“विपुलो राजगहीयानं, गिरि सेट्ठो पवुच्चति; सेतो हिमवतं सेट्ठो, आदिच्चो अघगामिनं।
“Vipulo rājagahīyānaṁ, giri seṭṭho pavuccati; Seto himavataṁ seṭṭho, ādicco aghagāminaṁ.
“Of all the mountains of Rājagaha, Vipula’s said to be the best. Seta is the best of the Himalayan peaks, and the sun, of travelers in space.
समुद्दो उदधिनं सेट्ठो, नक्खत्तानंव चन्दिमा; सदेवकस्स लोकस्स, बुद्धो अग्गो पवुच्चती”ति।
Samuddo udadhinaṁ seṭṭho, nakkhattānaṁva candimā; Sadevakassa lokassa, buddho aggo pavuccatī”ti.
The ocean is the best of seas, and the moon, of lights that shine at night. But in all the world with its gods, the Buddha is declared foremost.”
नानातित्थियवग्गो ततियो।
Nānātitthiyavaggo tatiyo.
तस्सुद्दानं
Tassuddānaṁ
सिवो खेमो च सेरी च, घटी जन्तु च रोहितो; नन्दो नन्दिविसालो च, सुसिमो नानातित्थियेन ते दसाति।
Sivo khemo ca serī ca, Ghaṭī jantu ca rohito; Nando nandivisālo ca, Susimo nānātitthiyena te dasāti.
देवपुत्तसंयुत्तं समत्तं।
Devaputtasaṁyuttaṁ samattaṁ.
