एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery.
अथ खो सम्बहुला सतुल्लपकायिका देवतायो अभिक्कन्ताय रत्तिया अभिक्कन्तवण्णा केवलकप्पं जेतवनं ओभासेत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठंसु। एकमन्तं ठिता खो एका देवता भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:
Atha kho sambahulā satullapakāyikā devatāyo abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho ekā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:
Then, late at night, several glorious deities of the Satullapa Group, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. Standing to one side, one deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:
“न सन्ति कामा मनुजेसु निच्चा, सन्तीध कमनीयानि येसु बद्धो; येसु पमत्तो अपुनागमनं, अनागन्ता पुरिसो मच्चुधेय्या”ति।
“Na santi kāmā manujesu niccā, Santīdha kamanīyāni yesu1 baddho; Yesu pamatto apunāgamanaṁ, Anāgantā puriso maccudheyyā”ti.
“Among humans there are no sensual pleasures
that are permanent. Here there are sensuous things, bound to which, drunk on which, there’s no coming back. That person doesn’t return herefrom Death’s domain.”
“छन्दजं अघं छन्दजं दुक्खं, छन्दविनया अघविनयो; अघविनया दुक्खविनयो”ति।
“Chandajaṁ aghaṁ chandajaṁ dukkhaṁ, Chandavinayā aghavinayo; Aghavinayā dukkhavinayo”ti.
“Misery is born of desire; suffering is born of desire; when desire is removed, misery is removed; when misery is removed, suffering is removed.”
“न ते कामा यानि चित्रानि लोके, सङ्कप्परागो पुरिसस्स कामो; तिट्ठन्ति चित्रानि तथेव लोके, अथेत्थ धीरा विनयन्ति छन्दं।
“Na te kāmā yāni citrāni loke, Saṅkapparāgo purisassa kāmo; Tiṭṭhanti citrāni tatheva loke, Athettha dhīrā vinayanti chandaṁ.
“The world’s pretty things aren’t sensual pleasures. Greedy intention is a person’s sensual pleasure. The world’s pretty things stay just as they are, but a wise one removes desire for them.
कोधं जहे विप्पजहेय्य मानं, संयोजनं सब्बमतिक्कमेय्य; तं नामरूपस्मिमसज्जमानं, अकिञ्चनं नानुपतन्ति दुक्खा।
Kodhaṁ jahe vippajaheyya mānaṁ, Saṁyojanaṁ sabbamatikkameyya; Taṁ nāmarūpasmimasajjamānaṁ, Akiñcanaṁ nānupatanti dukkhā.
Give up anger, get rid of conceit, and get past all the fetters. Sufferings don’t torment the one who has nothing, not clinging to name and form.
पहासि सङ्खं न विमानमज्झगा, अच्छेच्छि तण्हं इध नामरूपे; तं छिन्नगन्थं अनिघं निरासं, परियेसमाना नाज्झगमुं; देवा मनुस्सा इध वा हुरं वा, सग्गेसु वा सब्बनिवेसनेसू”ति।
Pahāsi saṅkhaṁ na vimānamajjhagā, Acchecchi taṇhaṁ idha nāmarūpe; Taṁ chinnaganthaṁ anighaṁ nirāsaṁ, Pariyesamānā nājjhagamuṁ; Devā manussā idha vā huraṁ vā, Saggesu vā sabbanivesanesū”ti.
Judging’s given up, conceit rejected; craving for name and form is cut off right here. They’ve cut the ties, untroubled,
“तञ्चे हि नाद्दक्खुं तथाविमुत्तं, (इच्चायस्मा मोघराजा) देवा मनुस्सा इध वा हुरं वा; नरुत्तमं अत्थचरं नरानं, ये तं नमस्सन्ति पसंसिया ते”ति।
“Tañce hi nāddakkhuṁ tathāvimuttaṁ, (iccāyasmā mogharājā) Devā manussā idha vā huraṁ vā; Naruttamaṁ atthacaraṁ narānaṁ, Ye taṁ namassanti pasaṁsiyā te”ti.
“If neither gods nor humans see one freed in this way,” said Venerable Mogharājā, “in this world or the world beyond, are those who revere that supreme person, who lives for the good of mankind,
“पसंसिया तेपि भवन्ति भिक्खू, (मोघराजाति भगवा) ये तं नमस्सन्ति तथाविमुत्तं; अञ्ञाय धम्मं विचिकिच्छं पहाय, सङ्गातिगा तेपि भवन्ति भिक्खू”ति।
“Pasaṁsiyā tepi bhavanti bhikkhū, (mogharājāti bhagavā) Ye taṁ namassanti tathāvimuttaṁ; Aññāya dhammaṁ vicikicchaṁ pahāya, Saṅgātigā tepi bhavanti bhikkhū”ti.
“The bhikkhus who revere one freed in this way,” said the Buddha, “are also worthy of praise, Mogharājā. Having understood the teaching
