    सावत्थियं विहरति।

    तेन खो पन समयेन अञ्ञतरो नवो भिक्खु पच्छाभत्तं पिण्डपातपटिक्कन्तो विहारं पविसित्वा अप्पोस्सुक्को तुण्हीभूतो सङ्कसायति, न भिक्खूनं वेय्यावच्चं करोति चीवरकारसमये। अथ खो सम्बहुला भिक्खू येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदिंसु। एकमन्तं निसिन्ना खो ते भिक्खू भगवन्तं एतदवोचुं: “इध, भन्ते, अञ्ञतरो नवो भिक्खु पच्छाभत्तं पिण्डपातपटिक्कन्तो विहारं पविसित्वा अप्पोस्सुक्को तुण्हीभूतो सङ्कसायति, न भिक्खूनं वेय्यावच्चं करोति चीवरकारसमये”ति।

    Tena kho pana samayena aññataro navo bhikkhu pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto vihāraṁ pavisitvā appossukko tuṇhībhūto saṅkasāyati, na bhikkhūnaṁ veyyāvaccaṁ karoti cīvarakārasamaye. Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: “idha, bhante, aññataro navo bhikkhu pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto vihāraṁ pavisitvā appossukko tuṇhībhūto saṅkasāyati, na bhikkhūnaṁ veyyāvaccaṁ karoti cīvarakārasamaye”ti.

    Now at that time a certain junior monk, after his meal, on his return from almsround, entered his dwelling, where he adhered to passivity and silence. And he didn’t help the bhikkhus out when it was time to sew robes. Then several bhikkhus went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened.

    अथ खो भगवा अञ्ञतरं भिक्खुं आमन्तेसि: “एहि त्वं, भिक्खु, मम वचनेन तं भिक्खुं आमन्तेहि ‘सत्था तं, आवुसो, आमन्तेतीऽ”ति।

    Atha kho bhagavā aññataraṁ bhikkhuṁ āmantesi: “ehi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, mama vacanena taṁ bhikkhuṁ āmantehi ‘satthā taṁ, āvuso, āmantetī’”ti.

    So the Buddha addressed a certain monk, “Please, monk, in my name tell that monk that the Teacher summons him.”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति खो सो भिक्खु भगवतो पटिस्सुत्वा येन सो भिक्खु तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा तं भिक्खुं एतदवोच: “सत्था तं, आवुसो, आमन्तेती”ति।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho so bhikkhu bhagavato paṭissutvā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca: “satthā taṁ, āvuso, āmantetī”ti.

    “Yes, sir,” that monk replied. He went to that monk and said to him, “Friend, the teacher summons you.”

    “एवमावुसो”ति खो सो भिक्खु तस्स भिक्खुनो पटिस्सुत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो तं भिक्खुं भगवा एतदवोच:

    “Evamāvuso”ti kho so bhikkhu tassa bhikkhuno paṭissutvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho taṁ bhikkhuṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

    “Yes, friend,” that monk replied. He went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

    “सच्चं किर त्वं, भिक्खु, पच्छाभत्तं पिण्डपातपटिक्कन्तो विहारं पविसित्वा अप्पोस्सुक्को तुण्हीभूतो सङ्कसायसि, न भिक्खूनं वेय्यावच्चं करोसि चीवरकारसमये”ति?

    “saccaṁ kira tvaṁ, bhikkhu, pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto vihāraṁ pavisitvā appossukko tuṇhībhūto saṅkasāyasi, na bhikkhūnaṁ veyyāvaccaṁ karosi cīvarakārasamaye”ti?

    “Is it really true, monk, that after your meal, on your return from almsround, you entered your dwelling, where you adhered to passivity and silence, and you didn’t help the bhikkhus out when it was time to sew robes?”

    “अहम्पि खो, भन्ते, सकं किच्चं करोमी”ति।

    “Ahampi kho, bhante, sakaṁ kiccaṁ karomī”ti.

    “Sir, I am doing my own work.”

    अथ खो भगवा तस्स भिक्खुनो चेतसा चेतोपरिवितक्कमञ्ञाय भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “मा खो तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, एतस्स भिक्खुनो उज्झायित्थ। एसो खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु चतुन्नं झानानं आभिचेतसिकानं दिट्ठधम्मसुखविहारानं निकामलाभी अकिच्छलाभी अकसिरलाभी, यस्स चत्थाय कुलपुत्ता सम्मदेव अगारस्मा अनगारियं पब्बजन्ति, तदनुत्तरं ब्रह्मचरियपरियोसानं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरती”ति।

    Atha kho bhagavā tassa bhikkhuno cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya bhikkhū āmantesi: “mā kho tumhe, bhikkhave, etassa bhikkhuno ujjhāyittha. Eso kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu catunnaṁ jhānānaṁ ābhicetasikānaṁ diṭṭhadhammasukhavihārānaṁ nikāmalābhī akicchalābhī akasiralābhī, yassa catthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatī”ti.

    Then the Buddha, knowing what that monk was thinking, addressed the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus, don’t complain about this monk. This monk gets the four jhānas—blissful meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when he wants, without trouble or difficulty. He has realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life, and lives having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.”

    इदमवोच भगवा। इदं वत्वान सुगतो अथापरं एतदवोच सत्था:

    Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:

    That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

    “नयिदं सिथिलमारब्भ, नयिदं अप्पेन थामसा; निब्बानं अधिगन्तब्बं, सब्बदुक्खप्पमोचनं।

    “Nayidaṁ sithilamārabbha, nayidaṁ appena thāmasā; Nibbānaṁ adhigantabbaṁ, sabbadukkhappamocanaṁ.

    “Not by being slack, or with little strength is Nibbana realized, the freedom from all suffering.

    अयञ्च दहरो भिक्खु, अयमुत्तमपुरिसो; धारेति अन्तिमं देहं, जेत्वा मारं सवाहिनिन्”ति।

    Ayañca daharo bhikkhu, ayamuttamapuriso; Dhāreti antimaṁ dehaṁ, jetvā māraṁ savāhinin”ti.

    This young monk, this best of men, bears his final body, having vanquished Māra and his mount.”

    चतुत्थं।
