एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं आयस्मा वङ्गीसो आळवियं विहरति अग्गाळवे चेतिये आयस्मता निग्रोधकप्पेन उपज्झायेन सद्धिं।
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā vaṅgīso āḷaviyaṁ viharati aggāḷave cetiye āyasmatā nigrodhakappena upajjhāyena saddhiṁ.
So I have heard. At one time Venerable Vaṅgīsa was staying near Āḷavī, at the Aggāḷava Tree-shrine, together with his mentor, Venerable Nigrodhakappa.
तेन खो पन समयेन आयस्मा वङ्गीसो नवको होति अचिरपब्बजितो ओहिय्यको विहारपालो।
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā vaṅgīso navako hoti acirapabbajito ohiyyako vihārapālo.
Now at that time Vaṅgīsa was junior, recently gone forth. He had been left behind to look after the dwelling.
अथ खो सम्बहुला इत्थियो समलङ्करित्वा येन अग्गाळवको आरामो तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु विहारपेक्खिकायो। अथ खो आयस्मतो वङ्गीसस्स ता इत्थियो दिस्वा अनभिरति उप्पज्जति, रागो चित्तं अनुद्धंसेति।
Atha kho sambahulā itthiyo samalaṅkaritvā yena aggāḷavako ārāmo tenupasaṅkamiṁsu vihārapekkhikāyo. Atha kho āyasmato vaṅgīsassa tā itthiyo disvā anabhirati uppajjati, rāgo cittaṁ anuddhaṁseti.
Then several women dressed in all their finery went to the monastery at Aggāḷava in order to inspect the dwelling. When Vaṅgīsa saw them he became dissatisfied, with lust infecting his mind.
अथ खो आयस्मतो वङ्गीसस्स एतदहोसि: “अलाभा वत मे, न वत मे लाभा; दुल्लद्धं वत मे, न वत मे सुलद्धं; यस्स मे अनभिरति उप्पन्ना, रागो चित्तं अनुद्धंसेति, तं कुतेत्थ लब्भा, यं मे परो अनभिरतिं विनोदेत्वा अभिरतिं उप्पादेय्य। यन्नूनाहं अत्तनाव अत्तनो अनभिरतिं विनोदेत्वा अभिरतिं उप्पादेय्यन्”ति।
Atha kho āyasmato vaṅgīsassa etadahosi: “alābhā vata me, na vata me lābhā; dulladdhaṁ vata me, na vata me suladdhaṁ; yassa me anabhirati uppannā, rāgo cittaṁ anuddhaṁseti, taṁ kutettha labbhā, yaṁ me paro anabhiratiṁ vinodetvā abhiratiṁ uppādeyya. Yannūnāhaṁ attanāva attano anabhiratiṁ vinodetvā abhiratiṁ uppādeyyan”ti.
Then he thought, “It’s my loss, my misfortune, that I’ve become dissatisfied, with lust infecting my mind. How is it possible for someone else to dispel my discontent and give rise to satisfaction? Why don’t I do it myself?”
अथ खो आयस्मा वङ्गीसो अत्तनाव अत्तनो अनभिरतिं विनोदेत्वा अभिरतिं उप्पादेत्वा तायं वेलायं इमा गाथायो अभासि:
Atha kho āyasmā vaṅgīso attanāva attano anabhiratiṁ vinodetvā abhiratiṁ uppādetvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
Then, on the occasion of dispelling his own discontent and giving rise to satisfaction, he recited these verses:
“निक्खन्तं वत मं सन्तं, अगारस्मानगारियं; वितक्का उपधावन्ति, पगब्भा कण्हतो इमे।
“Nikkhantaṁ vata maṁ santaṁ, agārasmānagāriyaṁ; Vitakkā upadhāvanti, pagabbhā kaṇhato ime.
“Now that I’ve renounced the home life for homelessness I’m overrun by the rude thoughts of the Dark One.
उग्गपुत्ता महिस्सासा, सिक्खिता दळ्हधम्मिनो; समन्ता परिकिरेय्युं, सहस्सं अपलायिनं।
Uggaputtā mahissāsā, sikkhitā daḷhadhammino; Samantā parikireyyuṁ, sahassaṁ apalāyinaṁ.
Even if a thousand mighty princes and great archers, well trained, with strong bows, were to completely surround me; I would never flee.
सचेपि एततो भिय्यो, आगमिस्सन्ति इत्थियो; नेव मं ब्याधयिस्सन्ति, धम्मे सम्हि पतिट्ठितं।
Sacepi etato1 bhiyyo, āgamissanti itthiyo; Neva maṁ byādhayissanti, dhamme samhi patiṭṭhitaṁ.
And even if women come, many more than that, they won’t scare me, for I stand firm in the teaching.
सक्खी हि मे सुतं एतं, बुद्धस्सादिच्चबन्धुनो; निब्बानगमनं मग्गं, तत्थ मे निरतो मनो।
Sakkhī hi me sutaṁ etaṁ, buddhassādiccabandhuno; Nibbānagamanaṁ maggaṁ, tattha me nirato mano.
I heard this with my own ears from the Buddha, kinsman of the Sun, about the path going to Nibbana; that’s what delights my mind.
एवञ्चे मं विहरन्तं, पापिम उपगच्छसि; तथा मच्चु करिस्सामि, न मे मग्गम्पि दक्खसी”ति।
Evañce maṁ viharantaṁ, pāpima upagacchasi; Tathā maccu karissāmi, na me maggampi dakkhasī”ti.
Wicked One, if you come near me as I meditate like this, I’ll make sure that you, Death, won’t even see the path I take.”
