    Cessation

    “निरोधसञ्ञा, भिक्खवे, भाविता बहुलीकता महप्फला होति महानिसंसा। कथं भाविता च, भिक्खवे, निरोधसञ्ञा कथं बहुलीकता महप्फला होति महानिसंसा? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु निरोधसञ्ञासहगतं सतिसम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति …पे… निरोधसञ्ञासहगतं उपेक्खासम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं। एवं भाविता खो, भिक्खवे, निरोधसञ्ञा एवं बहुलीकता महप्फला होति महानिसंसाति।

    “Nirodhasaññā, bhikkhave, bhāvitā bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā. Kathaṁ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, nirodhasaññā kathaṁ bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu nirodhasaññāsahagataṁ satisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti …pe… nirodhasaññāsahagataṁ upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ. Evaṁ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, nirodhasaññā evaṁ bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsāti.

    “Bhikkhus, when the perception of cessation is developed and cultivated it’s very fruitful and beneficial. How so? It’s when a bhikkhu develops the perception of cessation together with the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. That’s how, when the perception of cessation is developed and cultivated, it’s very fruitful and beneficial.

    निरोधसञ्ञाय, भिक्खवे, भाविताय बहुलीकताय द्विन्नं फलानं अञ्ञतरं फलं पाटिकङ्खं—दिट्ठेव धम्मे अञ्ञा, सति वा उपादिसेसे अनागामिता। कथं भाविताय, भिक्खवे, निरोधसञ्ञाय कथं बहुलीकताय द्विन्नं फलानं अञ्ञतरं फलं पाटिकङ्खं—दिट्ठेव धम्मे अञ्ञा, सति वा उपादिसेसे अनागामिता? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु निरोधसञ्ञासहगतं सतिसम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति …पे… निरोधसञ्ञासहगतं उपेक्खासम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं। एवं भाविताय खो, भिक्खवे, निरोधसञ्ञाय एवं बहुलीकताय द्विन्नं फलानं अञ्ञतरं फलं पाटिकङ्खं—दिट्ठेव धम्मे अञ्ञा, सति वा उपादिसेसे अनागामिताति।

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu nirodhasaññāsahagataṁ satisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti …pe… nirodhasaññāsahagataṁ upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ. Evaṁ bhāvitāya kho, bhikkhave, nirodhasaññāya evaṁ bahulīkatāya dvinnaṁ phalānaṁ aññataraṁ phalaṁ pāṭikaṅkhaṁ—diṭṭheva dhamme aññā, sati vā upādisese anāgāmitāti.

    When the perception of cessation is developed and cultivated you can expect one of two results: enlightenment in the present life, or if there’s something left over, non-return. How so? It’s when a bhikkhu develops the perception of cessation together with the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. When the perception of cessation is developed and cultivated in this way you can expect one of two results: enlightenment in the present life, or if there’s something left over, non-return.”

    “The perception of cessation, when developed and cultivated, leads to great benefit … great sanctuary from the yoke … great inspiration … great ease. How so? It’s when a bhikkhu develops the perception of cessation together with the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. That’s how the perception of cessation, when developed and cultivated, leads to great benefit … great sanctuary from the yoke … great inspiration … great ease.”

    असुभमरणआहारे, पटिकूलअनभिरतेन; अनिच्चदुक्खअनत्तपहानं, विरागनिरोधेन ते दसाति।

    Asubhamaraṇaāhāre, Paṭikūlaanabhiratena; Aniccadukkhaanattapahānaṁ, Virāganirodhena te dasāti.
