    A Question About Floods

    “‘ओघो, ओघोऽति, आवुसो सारिपुत्त, वुच्चति। कतमो नु खो, आवुसो, ओघो”ति?

    “‘Ogho, ogho’ti, āvuso sāriputta, vuccati. Katamo nu kho, āvuso, ogho”ti?

    “Friend Sāriputta, they speak of this thing called ‘a flood’. What is a flood?”

    “चत्तारोमे, आवुसो, ओघा। कामोघो, भवोघो, दिट्ठोघो, अविज्जोघो—इमे खो, आवुसो, चत्तारो ओघा”ति।

    “Cattārome, āvuso, oghā. Kāmogho, bhavogho, diṭṭhogho, avijjogho—ime kho, āvuso, cattāro oghā”ti.

    “Friend, there are these four floods. The floods of sensuality, desire to be reborn, views, and ignorance. These are the four floods.”

    “अत्थि पनावुसो, मग्गो अत्थि पटिपदा, एतेसं ओघानं पहानाया”ति?

    “Atthi panāvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā, etesaṁ oghānaṁ pahānāyā”ti?

    “But, friend, is there a path and a practice for completely understanding these floods?”

    “अत्थि खो, आवुसो, मग्गो अत्थि पटिपदा, एतेसं ओघानं पहानाया”ति।

    “Atthi kho, āvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā, etesaṁ oghānaṁ pahānāyā”ti.

    “There is.” …

    “कतमो पनावुसो, मग्गो कतमा पटिपदा, एतेसं ओघानं पहानाया”ति? “अयमेव खो, आवुसो, अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो, एतेसं ओघानं पहानाय, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि …पे… सम्मासमाधि। अयं खो, आवुसो, मग्गो अयं पटिपदा, एतेसं ओघानं पहानाया”ति। “भद्दको, आवुसो, मग्गो भद्दिका पटिपदा, एतेसं ओघानं पहानाय। अलञ्च पनावुसो सारिपुत्त, अप्पमादाया”ति।

    “Katamo panāvuso, maggo katamā paṭipadā, etesaṁ oghānaṁ pahānāyā”ti? “Ayameva kho, āvuso, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, etesaṁ oghānaṁ pahānāya, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi. Ayaṁ kho, āvuso, maggo ayaṁ paṭipadā, etesaṁ oghānaṁ pahānāyā”ti. “Bhaddako, āvuso, maggo bhaddikā paṭipadā, etesaṁ oghānaṁ pahānāya. Alañca panāvuso sāriputta, appamādāyā”ti.
