Crossing the Flood
एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे।
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery.
अथ खो अञ्ञतरा देवता अभिक्कन्ताय रत्तिया अभिक्कन्तवण्णा केवलकप्पं जेतवनं ओभासेत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठासि। एकमन्तं ठिता खो सा देवता भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “कथं नु त्वं, मारिस, ओघमतरी”ति?
Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “kathaṁ nu tvaṁ, mārisa, oghamatarī”ti?
Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him, “Good sir, how did you cross the flood?”
“अप्पतिट्ठं ख्वाहं, आवुसो, अनायूहं ओघमतरिन्”ति।
“Appatiṭṭhaṁ khvāhaṁ, āvuso, anāyūhaṁ oghamatarin”ti.
“Neither standing nor swimming, sir, I crossed the flood.”
“यथाकथं पन त्वं, मारिस, अप्पतिट्ठं अनायूहं ओघमतरी”ति?
“Yathākathaṁ pana tvaṁ, mārisa, appatiṭṭhaṁ anāyūhaṁ oghamatarī”ti?
“But in what way did you cross the flood neither standing nor swimming?”
“यदास्वाहं, आवुसो, सन्तिट्ठामि तदास्सु संसीदामि; यदास्वाहं, आवुसो, आयूहामि तदास्सु निब्बुय्हामि। एवं ख्वाहं, आवुसो, अप्पतिट्ठं अनायूहं ओघमतरिन्”ति।
“Yadāsvāhaṁ, āvuso, santiṭṭhāmi tadāssu saṁsīdāmi; yadāsvāhaṁ, āvuso, āyūhāmi tadāssu nibbuyhāmi. Evaṁ khvāhaṁ, āvuso, appatiṭṭhaṁ anāyūhaṁ oghamatarin”ti.
“When I stood still, I went under. And when I swam, I was swept away. That’s how I crossed the flood neither standing nor swimming.”
“चिरस्सं वत पस्सामि, ब्राह्मणं परिनिब्बुतं; अप्पतिट्ठं अनायूहं, तिण्णं लोके विसत्तिकन्”ति।
“Cirassaṁ vata passāmi, brāhmaṇaṁ parinibbutaṁ; Appatiṭṭhaṁ anāyūhaṁ, tiṇṇaṁ loke visattikan”ti.
“After a long time I see a brahmin extinguished. Neither standing nor swimming, he’s crossed over clinging to the world.”
इदमवोच सा देवता। समनुञ्ञो सत्था अहोसि। अथ खो सा देवता: “समनुञ्ञो मे सत्था”ति भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा पदक्खिणं कत्वा तत्थेवन्तरधायीति।
Idamavoca sā devatā. Samanuñño satthā ahosi. Atha kho sā devatā: “samanuñño me satthā”ti bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyīti.
This is what that deity said, and the teacher approved. Then that deity, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there.
