A Mountain

At Sāvatthī.
अथ खो अञ्ञतरो भिक्खु येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो सो भिक्खु भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “कीवदीघो नु खो, भन्ते, कप्पो”ति?
Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “kīvadīgho nu kho, bhante, kappo”ti?
Then a bhikkhu went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and asked him, “Sir, how long is an eon?”
“दीघो खो, भिक्खु, कप्पो। सो न सुकरो सङ्खातुं एत्तकानि वस्सानि इति वा, एत्तकानि वस्ससतानि इति वा, एत्तकानि वस्ससहस्सानि इति वा, एत्तकानि वस्ससतसहस्सानि इति वा”ति।
“Dīgho kho, bhikkhu, kappo. So na sukaro saṅkhātuṁ ettakāni vassāni iti vā, ettakāni vassasatāni iti vā, ettakāni vassasahassāni iti vā, ettakāni vassasatasahassāni iti vā”ti.
“Bhikkhu, an eon is long. It’s not easy to calculate how many years, how many hundreds or thousands or hundreds of thousands of years it lasts.”
“सक्का पन, भन्ते, उपमं कातुन्”ति?
“Sakkā pana, bhante, upamaṁ kātun”ti?
“But sir, is it possible to give a simile?”
“सक्का, भिक्खू”ति भगवा अवोच।
“Sakkā, bhikkhū”ti bhagavā avoca.
“It’s possible,” said the Buddha.
“सेय्यथापि, भिक्खु, महासेलो पब्बतो योजनं आयामेन योजनं वित्थारेन योजनं उब्बेधेन अच्छिन्नो असुसिरो एकग्घनो। तमेनं पुरिसो वस्ससतस्स वस्ससतस्स अच्चयेन कासिकेन वत्थेन सकिं सकिं परिमज्जेय्य। खिप्पतरं खो सो, भिक्खु, महासेलो पब्बतो इमिना उपक्कमेन परिक्खयं परियादानं गच्छेय्य, न त्वेव कप्पो। एवं दीघो, भिक्खु, कप्पो। एवं दीघानं खो, भिक्खु, कप्पानं नेको कप्पो संसितो, नेकं कप्पसतं संसितं, नेकं कप्पसहस्सं संसितं, नेकं कप्पसतसहस्सं संसितं।
“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhu, mahāselo pabbato yojanaṁ āyāmena yojanaṁ vitthārena yojanaṁ ubbedhena acchinno asusiro ekagghano. Tamenaṁ puriso vassasatassa vassasatassa accayena kāsikena vatthena sakiṁ sakiṁ parimajjeyya. Khippataraṁ kho so, bhikkhu, mahāselo pabbato iminā upakkamena parikkhayaṁ pariyādānaṁ gaccheyya, na tveva kappo. Evaṁ dīgho, bhikkhu, kappo. Evaṁ dīghānaṁ kho, bhikkhu, kappānaṁ neko kappo saṁsito, nekaṁ kappasataṁ saṁsitaṁ, nekaṁ kappasahassaṁ saṁsitaṁ, nekaṁ kappasatasahassaṁ saṁsitaṁ.
“Suppose there was a huge stone mountain, a league long, a league wide, and a league high, with no cracks or holes, one solid mass. And as each century passed someone would stroke it with a fine cloth from Kāsi. By this means the huge stone mountain would be worn away before the eon comes to an end. That’s how long an eon is. And we’ve transmigrated through many such eons, many hundreds, many thousands, many hundreds of thousands.
तं किस्स हेतु? अनमतग्गोयं, भिक्खु, संसारो। पुब्बा कोटि …पे… यावञ्चिदं, भिक्खु, अलमेव सब्बसङ्खारेसु निब्बिन्दितुं, अलं विरज्जितुं, अलं विमुच्चितुन्”ति।
Taṁ kissa hetu? Anamataggoyaṁ, bhikkhu, saṁsāro. Pubbā koṭi …pe… yāvañcidaṁ, bhikkhu, alameva sabbasaṅkhāresu nibbindituṁ, alaṁ virajjituṁ, alaṁ vimuccitun”ti.
Why is that? Transmigration has no known beginning. … This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.”
