“सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, यानि कानिचि जङ्गलानं पाणानं पदजातानि सब्बानि तानि हत्थिपदे समोधानं गच्छन्ति, हत्थिपदं तेसं अग्गमक्खायति, यदिदं—महन्तत्तेन; एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, यानि कानिचि पदानि बोधाय संवत्तन्ति, पञ्ञिन्द्रियं पदं तेसं अग्गमक्खायति, यदिदं—बोधाय।
“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yāni kānici jaṅgalānaṁ1 pāṇānaṁ padajātāni sabbāni tāni hatthipade samodhānaṁ gacchanti, hatthipadaṁ tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati, yadidaṁ—mahantattena; evameva kho, bhikkhave, yāni kānici padāni bodhāya saṁvattanti, paññindriyaṁ padaṁ tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati, yadidaṁ—bodhāya.
“The footprints of all creatures that walk can fit inside an elephant’s footprint, so an elephant’s footprint is said to be the biggest of them all. In the same way, the faculty of wisdom is said to be the best of the steps that lead to awakening in terms of becoming awakened.
कतमानि च, भिक्खवे, पदानि बोधाय संवत्तन्ति? सद्धिन्द्रियं, भिक्खवे, पदं, तं बोधाय संवत्तति; वीरियिन्द्रियं पदं, तं बोधाय संवत्तति; सतिन्द्रियं पदं, तं बोधाय संवत्तति; समाधिन्द्रियं पदं, तं बोधाय संवत्तति; पञ्ञिन्द्रियं पदं, तं बोधाय संवत्तति।
Katamāni ca, bhikkhave, padāni bodhāya saṁvattanti? Saddhindriyaṁ, bhikkhave, padaṁ, taṁ bodhāya saṁvattati; vīriyindriyaṁ padaṁ, taṁ bodhāya saṁvattati; satindriyaṁ padaṁ, taṁ bodhāya saṁvattati; samādhindriyaṁ padaṁ, taṁ bodhāya saṁvattati; paññindriyaṁ padaṁ, taṁ bodhāya saṁvattati.
And what are the steps that lead to awakening? The faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom are steps that lead to awakening, in that they lead to becoming awakened.
