    Liable to Wear Out

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    अथ खो आयस्मा आनन्दो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि …पे… एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा आनन्दो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

    “‘लोको, लोकोऽति, भन्ते, वुच्चति। कित्तावता नु खो, भन्ते, लोकोति वुच्चती”ति?

    “‘Loko, loko’ti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, lokoti vuccatī”ti?

    “Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘the world’. How is the world defined?”

    “यं खो, आनन्द, पलोकधम्मं, अयं वुच्चति अरियस्स विनये लोको। किञ्च, आनन्द, पलोकधम्मं? चक्खु खो, आनन्द, पलोकधम्मं, रूपा पलोकधम्मा, चक्खुविञ्ञाणं पलोकधम्मं, चक्खुसम्फस्सो पलोकधम्मो, यम्पिदं चक्खुसम्फस्सपच्चया …पे… तम्पि पलोकधम्मं …पे…

    “Yaṁ kho, ānanda, palokadhammaṁ, ayaṁ vuccati ariyassa vinaye loko. Kiñca, ānanda, palokadhammaṁ? Cakkhu kho, ānanda, palokadhammaṁ, rūpā palokadhammā, cakkhuviññāṇaṁ palokadhammaṁ, cakkhusamphasso palokadhammo, yampidaṁ cakkhusamphassapaccayā …pe… tampi palokadhammaṁ …pe…

    “Ānanda, that which is liable to wear out is called the world in the training of the Noble One. And what is liable to wear out? The eye is liable to wear out. Sights … eye consciousness … eye contact is liable to wear out. The painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact is also liable to wear out.

    जिव्हा पलोकधम्मा, रसा पलोकधम्मा, जिव्हाविञ्ञाणं पलोकधम्मं, जिव्हासम्फस्सो पलोकधम्मो, यम्पिदं जिव्हासम्फस्सपच्चया …पे… तम्पि पलोकधम्मं …पे… मनो पलोकधम्मो, धम्मा पलोकधम्मा, मनोविञ्ञाणं पलोकधम्मं, मनोसम्फस्सो पलोकधम्मो, यम्पिदं मनोसम्फस्सपच्चया उप्पज्जति वेदयितं सुखं वा दुक्खं वा अदुक्खमसुखं वा तम्पि पलोकधम्मं।

    jivhā palokadhammā, rasā palokadhammā, jivhāviññāṇaṁ palokadhammaṁ, jivhāsamphasso palokadhammo, yampidaṁ jivhāsamphassapaccayā …pe… tampi palokadhammaṁ …pe… mano palokadhammo, dhammā palokadhammā, manoviññāṇaṁ palokadhammaṁ, manosamphasso palokadhammo, yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi palokadhammaṁ.

    The ear … nose … tongue … body … The mind … thoughts … mind consciousness … mind contact is liable to wear out. The painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact is also liable to wear out.

    यं खो, आनन्द, पलोकधम्मं, अयं वुच्चति अरियस्स विनये लोको”ति।

    Yaṁ kho, ānanda, palokadhammaṁ, ayaṁ vuccati ariyassa vinaye loko”ti.

    That which is liable to wear out is called the world in the training of the Noble One.”
