    Chapter One

    Pañcālacaṇḍasutta

    With Pañcālacaṇḍa

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho pañcālacaṇḍo devaputto bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

Standing to one side, the god Pañcālacaṇḍa recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

“Sambādhe vata okāsaṁ, Avindi bhūrimedhaso; Yo jhānamabujjhi1 buddho, Paṭilīnanisabho munī”ti.

“The opening amid confinement was discovered by the Buddha of vast intelligence, who woke up to jhāna, the sage, the solitary bull.”

“Sambādhe vāpi vindanti, (pañcālacaṇḍāti bhagavā) Dhammaṁ nibbānapattiyā; Ye satiṁ paccalatthaṁsu, Sammā te susamāhitā”ti.

“Even amid confinement they discover,” said the Buddha to Pañcālacaṇḍa, “the principle for attaining Nibbana. Those who have acquired mindfulness are perfectly serene in samādhi.”
