Wise
“‘पञ्ञवा अनेळमूगो, पञ्ञवा अनेळमूगोऽति, भन्ते, वुच्चति। कित्तावता नु खो, भन्ते, ‘पञ्ञवा अनेळमूगोऽति वुच्चती”ति?
“‘Paññavā aneḷamūgo, paññavā aneḷamūgo’ti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, ‘paññavā aneḷamūgo’ti vuccatī”ti?
“Sir they speak of a person who is ‘wise, no idiot’. How is a person who is wise, no idiot defined?”
“सत्तन्नं खो, भिक्खु, बोज्झङ्गानं भावितत्ता बहुलीकतत्ता ‘पञ्ञवा अनेळमूगोऽति वुच्चति। कतमेसं सत्तन्नं? सतिसम्बोज्झङ्गस्स …पे… उपेक्खासम्बोज्झङ्गस्स—इमेसं खो, भिक्खु, सत्तन्नं बोज्झङ्गानं भावितत्ता बहुलीकतत्ता ‘पञ्ञवा अनेळमूगोऽति वुच्चती”ति।
“Sattannaṁ kho, bhikkhu, bojjhaṅgānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā ‘paññavā aneḷamūgo’ti vuccati. Katamesaṁ sattannaṁ? Satisambojjhaṅgassa …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa—imesaṁ kho, bhikkhu, sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā ‘paññavā aneḷamūgo’ti vuccatī”ti.
“Bhikkhu, they’re called wise, no idiot because they’ve developed and cultivated the seven awakening factors. What seven? The awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity. They’re called wise, no idiot because they’ve developed and cultivated these seven awakening factors.”
