Should Be Completely Understood
सावत्थिनिदानं।
Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
“परिञ्ञेय्ये च, भिक्खवे, धम्मे देसेस्सामि परिञ्ञञ्च परिञ्ञाताविञ्च पुग्गलं। तं सुणाथ।
“Pariññeyye ca, bhikkhave, dhamme desessāmi pariññañca pariññātāviñca puggalaṁ. Taṁ suṇātha.
“Bhikkhus, I will teach you the things that should be completely understood, complete understanding, and the person who has completely understood. Listen …
कतमे च, भिक्खवे, परिञ्ञेय्या धम्मा? रूपं, भिक्खवे, परिञ्ञेय्यो धम्मो। वेदना …पे… सञ्ञा … सङ्खारा … विञ्ञाणं परिञ्ञेय्यो धम्मो। इमे वुच्चन्ति, भिक्खवे, परिञ्ञेय्या धम्मा।
Katame ca, bhikkhave, pariññeyyā dhammā? Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, pariññeyyo dhammo. Vedanā …pe… saññā … saṅkhārā … viññāṇaṁ pariññeyyo dhammo. Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, pariññeyyā dhammā.
And what things should be completely understood? Form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. These are called the things that should be completely understood.
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, परिञ्ञा? रागक्खयो, दोसक्खयो, मोहक्खयो—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, परिञ्ञा।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, pariññā? Rāgakkhayo, dosakkhayo, mohakkhayo—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, pariññā.
And what is complete understanding? The ending of greed, hate, and delusion. This is called complete understanding.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, परिञ्ञातावी पुग्गलो? अरहातिस्स वचनीयं। य्वायं आयस्मा एवंनामो एवङ्गोत्तो—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, परिञ्ञातावी पुग्गलो”ति।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariññātāvī puggalo? Arahātissa vacanīyaṁ. Yvāyaṁ āyasmā evaṁnāmo evaṅgotto—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, pariññātāvī puggalo”ti.
And what is the person who has completely understood? It should be said: a perfected one, the venerable of such and such name and clan. This is called the person who has completely understood.”
