    Pariññeyyasutta

    Should Be Completely Understood

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    आयस्मा राधो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो आयस्मन्तं राधं भगवा एतदवोच:

    Āyasmā rādho yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ rādhaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

    Then Venerable Rādha went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

    “परिञ्ञेय्ये च, राध, धम्मे देसेस्सामि परिञ्ञञ्च परिञ्ञाताविं पुग्गलञ्च। तं सुणाहि, साधुकं मनसि करोहि; भासिस्सामी”ति।

    “Pariññeyye ca, rādha, dhamme desessāmi pariññañca pariññātāviṁ puggalañca. Taṁ suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmī”ti.

    “Rādha, I will teach you the things that should be completely understood, complete understanding, and the person who has completely understood. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति खो आयस्मा राधो भगवतो पच्चस्सोसि। भगवा एतदवोच:

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā rādho bhagavato paccassosi. Bhagavā etadavoca:

    “Yes, sir,” Rādha replied. The Buddha said this:

    “कतमे च, राध, परिञ्ञेय्या धम्मा? रूपं खो, राध, परिञ्ञेय्यो धम्मो, वेदना परिञ्ञेय्यो धम्मो, सञ्ञा परिञ्ञेय्यो धम्मो, सङ्खारा परिञ्ञेय्यो धम्मो, विञ्ञाणं परिञ्ञेय्यो धम्मो। इमे वुच्चन्ति, राध, परिञ्ञेय्या धम्मा।

    “katame ca, rādha, pariññeyyā dhammā? Rūpaṁ kho, rādha, pariññeyyo dhammo, vedanā pariññeyyo dhammo, saññā pariññeyyo dhammo, saṅkhārā pariññeyyo dhammo, viññāṇaṁ pariññeyyo dhammo. Ime vuccanti, rādha, pariññeyyā dhammā.

    “And what things should be completely understood? Form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. These are called the things that should be completely understood.

    कतमा च, राध, परिञ्ञा? यो खो, राध, रागक्खयो दोसक्खयो मोहक्खयो—अयं वुच्चति, राध, परिञ्ञा।

    Katamā ca, rādha, pariññā? Yo kho, rādha, rāgakkhayo dosakkhayo mohakkhayo—ayaṁ vuccati, rādha, pariññā.

    And what is complete understanding? The ending of greed, hate, and delusion. This is called complete understanding.

    कतमो च, राध, परिञ्ञातावी पुग्गलो? ‘अरहाऽतिस्स वचनीयं। य्वायं आयस्मा एवंनामो एवङ्गोत्तो—अयं वुच्चति, राध, परिञ्ञातावी पुग्गलो”ति।

    Katamo ca, rādha, pariññātāvī puggalo? ‘Arahā’tissa vacanīyaṁ. Yvāyaṁ āyasmā evaṁnāmo evaṅgotto—ayaṁ vuccati, rādha, pariññātāvī puggalo”ti.

    And what is the person who has completely understood? It should be said: a perfected one, the venerable of such and such name and clan. This is called the person who has completely understood.”

    चतुत्थं।
