    Should Be Completely Understood

    සාවත්ථිනිදානං.

    At Sāvatthī.

    “පරිඤ්ඤේය්‍යේ ච, භික්ඛවේ, ධම්මේ දේසේස්සාමි පරිඤ්ඤඤ්ච පරිඤ්ඤාතාවිඤ්ච පුග්ගලං. තං සුණාථ.

    “Bhikkhus, I will teach you the things that should be completely understood, complete understanding, and the person who has completely understood. Listen …

    කතමේ ච, භික්ඛවේ, පරිඤ්ඤේය්‍යා ධම්මා? රූපං, භික්ඛවේ, පරිඤ්ඤේය්‍යෝ ධම්මෝ. වේදනා …පේ… සඤ්ඤා … සඞ්ඛාරා … විඤ්ඤාණං පරිඤ්ඤේය්‍යෝ ධම්මෝ. ඉමේ වුච්චන්ති, භික්ඛවේ, පරිඤ්ඤේය්‍යා ධම්මා.

    And what things should be completely understood? Form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. These are called the things that should be completely understood.

    කතමා ච, භික්ඛවේ, පරිඤ්ඤා? රාගක්ඛයෝ, දෝසක්ඛයෝ, මෝහක්ඛයෝ—අයං වුච්චති, භික්ඛවේ, පරිඤ්ඤා.

    And what is complete understanding? The ending of greed, hate, and delusion. This is called complete understanding.

    කතමෝ ච, භික්ඛවේ, පරිඤ්ඤාතාවී පුග්ගලෝ? අරහාතිස්ස වචනීයං. ය්වායං ආයස්මා ඒවංනාමෝ ඒවඞ්ගෝත්තෝ—අයං වුච්චති, භික්ඛවේ, පරිඤ්ඤාතාවී පුග්ගලෝ”ති.

    And what is the person who has completely understood? It should be said: a perfected one, the venerable of such and such name and clan. This is called the person who has completely understood.”
