सावत्थिनिदानं।
Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
अथ खो आयस्मा आनन्दो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा आनन्दो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:
Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“कतमा नु खो, भन्ते, इद्धि, कतमो इद्धिपादो, कतमा इद्धिपादभावना, कतमा इद्धिपादभावनागामिनी पटिपदा”ति?
“Katamā nu kho, bhante, iddhi, katamo iddhipādo, katamā iddhipādabhāvanā, katamā iddhipādabhāvanāgāminī paṭipadā”ti?
“Sir, what is psychic power? What is the basis of psychic power? What is the development of the bases of psychic power? And what is the practice that leads to the development of the bases of psychic power?”
“इधानन्द, भिक्खु अनेकविहितं इद्धिविधं पच्चनुभोति—एकोपि हुत्वा बहुधा होति, बहुधापि हुत्वा एको होति …पे… याव ब्रह्मलोकापि कायेन वसं वत्तेति—अयं वुच्चतानन्द, इद्धि।
“Idhānanda, bhikkhu anekavihitaṁ iddhividhaṁ paccanubhoti—ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti …pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṁ vatteti—ayaṁ vuccatānanda, iddhi.
“Ānanda, take a bhikkhu who wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again … controlling the body as far as the Brahmā realm. This is called psychic power.
कतमो चानन्द, इद्धिपादो? यो, आनन्द, मग्गो या पटिपदा इद्धिलाभाय इद्धिपटिलाभाय संवत्तति—अयं वुच्चतानन्द, इद्धिपादो।
Katamo cānanda, iddhipādo? Yo, ānanda, maggo yā paṭipadā iddhilābhāya iddhipaṭilābhāya saṁvattati—ayaṁ vuccatānanda, iddhipādo.
And what is the basis of psychic power? The path and practice that leads to gaining psychic power. This is called the basis of psychic power.
कतमा चानन्द, इद्धिपादभावना? इधानन्द, भिक्खु छन्दसमाधिप्पधानसङ्खारसमन्नागतं इद्धिपादं भावेति, वीरियसमाधि …पे… चित्तसमाधि … वीमंसासमाधिप्पधानसङ्खारसमन्नागतं इद्धिपादं भावेति—अयं वुच्चतानन्द, इद्धिपादभावना।
Katamā cānanda, iddhipādabhāvanā? Idhānanda, bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti, vīriyasamādhi …pe… cittasamādhi … vīmaṁsāsamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṁ iddhipādaṁ bhāveti—ayaṁ vuccatānanda, iddhipādabhāvanā.
And what is the development of the bases of psychic power? It’s when a bhikkhu develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm … energy … mental development … inquiry, and active effort. This is called the development of the bases of psychic power.
कतमा चानन्द, इद्धिपादभावनागामिनी पटिपदा? अयमेव अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि …पे… सम्मासमाधि—अयं वुच्चतानन्द, इद्धिपादभावनागामिनी पटिपदा”ति।
Katamā cānanda, iddhipādabhāvanāgāminī paṭipadā? Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi—ayaṁ vuccatānanda, iddhipādabhāvanāgāminī paṭipadā”ti.
And what is the practice that leads to the development of the bases of psychic power? It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. This is called the practice that leads to the development of the bases of psychic power.”
