    Turbulence (1st)

    “एजा, भिक्खवे, रोगो, एजा गण्डो, एजा सल्लं। तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, तथागतो अनेजो विहरति वीतसल्लो।

    “Ejā, bhikkhave, rogo, ejā gaṇḍo, ejā sallaṁ. Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, tathāgato anejo viharati vītasallo.

    “Bhikkhus, turbulence is a disease, a boil, a dart. That’s why the Realized One lives unperturbed, with dart drawn out.

    तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु चेपि आकङ्खेय्य ‘अनेजो विहरेय्यं वीतसल्लोऽति,

    Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaṅkheyya ‘anejo vihareyyaṁ1 vītasallo’ti,

    Now, a bhikkhu might wish: ‘May I live unperturbed, with dart drawn out.’

    चक्खुं न मञ्ञेय्य, चक्खुस्मिं न मञ्ञेय्य, चक्खुतो न मञ्ञेय्य, चक्खु मेति न मञ्ञेय्य; रूपे न मञ्ञेय्य, रूपेसु न मञ्ञेय्य, रूपतो न मञ्ञेय्य, रूपा मेति न मञ्ञेय्य; चक्खुविञ्ञाणं न मञ्ञेय्य, चक्खुविञ्ञाणस्मिं न मञ्ञेय्य, चक्खुविञ्ञाणतो न मञ्ञेय्य, चक्खुविञ्ञाणं मेति न मञ्ञेय्य; चक्खुसम्फस्सं न मञ्ञेय्य, चक्खुसम्फस्सस्मिं न मञ्ञेय्य, चक्खुसम्फस्सतो न मञ्ञेय्य, चक्खुसम्फस्सो मेति न मञ्ञेय्य। यम्पिदं चक्खुसम्फस्सपच्चया उप्पज्जति वेदयितं सुखं वा दुक्खं वा अदुक्खमसुखं वा तम्पि न मञ्ञेय्य, तस्मिम्पि न मञ्ञेय्य, ततोपि न मञ्ञेय्य, तं मेति न मञ्ञेय्य।

    cakkhuṁ na maññeyya, cakkhusmiṁ na maññeyya, cakkhuto na maññeyya, cakkhu meti na maññeyya; rūpe na maññeyya, rūpesu na maññeyya, rūpato na maññeyya, rūpā meti na maññeyya; cakkhuviññāṇaṁ na maññeyya, cakkhuviññāṇasmiṁ na maññeyya, cakkhuviññāṇato na maññeyya, cakkhuviññāṇaṁ meti na maññeyya; cakkhusamphassaṁ na maññeyya, cakkhusamphassasmiṁ na maññeyya, cakkhusamphassato na maññeyya, cakkhusamphasso meti na maññeyya. Yampidaṁ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi na maññeyya, tasmimpi na maññeyya, tatopi na maññeyya, taṁ meti na maññeyya.

    So let them not conceive anything to be the eye, let them not conceive it in the eye, let them not conceive it as the eye, let them not conceive that ‘the eye is mine.’ Let them not conceive sights … eye consciousness … eye contact … Let them not conceive anything to be the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact. Let them not conceive it in that, let them not conceive it as that, and let them not conceive that ‘that is mine.’

Kāyaṁ na maññeyya …pe… manaṁ na maññeyya, manasmiṁ na maññeyya, manato na maññeyya, mano meti na maññeyya; dhamme na maññeyya …pe… mano viññāṇaṁ …pe… manosamphassaṁ …pe… yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi na maññeyya, tasmimpi na maññeyya, tatopi na maññeyya, taṁ meti na maññeyya;

    Let them not conceive anything to be the ear … nose … tongue … body … mind … thoughts … mind consciousness … mind contact … Let them not conceive anything to be the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact. Let them not conceive it in that, let them not conceive it as that, and let them not conceive that ‘that is mine.’

    सब्बं न मञ्ञेय्य, सब्बस्मिं न मञ्ञेय्य, सब्बतो न मञ्ञेय्य, सब्बं मेति न मञ्ञेय्य।

    sabbaṁ na maññeyya, sabbasmiṁ na maññeyya, sabbato na maññeyya, sabbaṁ meti na maññeyya.

    Let them not conceive anything to be all, let them not conceive it in all, let them not conceive it as all, let them not conceive that ‘all is mine’.

    सो एवं अमञ्ञमानो न किञ्चिपि लोके उपादियति। अनुपादियं न परितस्सति। अपरितस्सं पच्चत्तञ्ञेव परिनिब्बायति।

    So evaṁ amaññamāno na kiñcipi loke upādiyati. Anupādiyaṁ na paritassati. Aparitassaṁ paccattaññeva parinibbāyati.

    Not conceiving, they don’t grasp at anything in the world. Not grasping, they’re not anxious. Not being anxious, they personally become extinguished.

    ‘खीणा जाति, वुसितं ब्रह्मचरियं, कतं करणीयं नापरं इत्थत्तायाऽति पजानाती”ति।

    ‘Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānātī”ti.

    They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is no return to any state of existence.’”

    सत्तमं।
