एकं समयं आयस्मा कामभू मच्छिकासण्डे विहरति अम्बाटकवने।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā kāmabhū macchikāsaṇḍe viharati ambāṭakavane.
At one time Venerable Kāmabhū was staying near Macchikāsaṇḍa in the Wild Mango Grove.
अथ खो चित्तो गहपति येनायस्मा कामभू तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मन्तं कामभुं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो चित्तं गहपतिं आयस्मा कामभू एतदवोच: “वुत्तमिदं, गहपति:
Atha kho citto gahapati yenāyasmā kāmabhū tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ kāmabhuṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho cittaṁ gahapatiṁ āyasmā kāmabhū etadavoca: “Vuttamidaṁ, gahapati:
Then Citta the householder went up to Venerable Kāmabhū, bowed, and sat down to one side. Kāmabhū said to him, “Householder, there is this saying:
‘नेलङ्गो सेतपच्छादो, एकारो वत्तती रथो; अनीघं पस्स आयन्तं, छिन्नसोतं अबन्धनन्ऽति।
‘Nelaṅgo setapacchādo, ekāro vattatī ratho; Anīghaṁ passa āyantaṁ, chinnasotaṁ abandhanan’ti.
‘With flawless wheel and white canopy, the one-spoke chariot rolls on. See it come, untroubled, with stream cut, unbound.’
इमस्स नु खो, गहपति, सङ्खित्तेन भासितस्स कथं वित्थारेन अत्थो दट्ठब्बो”ति?
Imassa nu kho, gahapati, saṅkhittena bhāsitassa kathaṁ vitthārena attho daṭṭhabbo”ti?
How should we see the detailed meaning of this brief statement?”
“किं नु खो एतं, भन्ते, भगवता भासितन्”ति?
“Kiṁ nu kho etaṁ, bhante, bhagavatā bhāsitan”ti?
“Sir, was this spoken by the Buddha?”
“एवं, गहपती”ति।
“Evaṁ, gahapatī”ti.
“Yes, householder.”
“तेन हि, भन्ते, मुहुत्तं आगमेहि यावस्स अत्थं पेक्खामी”ति। अथ खो चित्तो गहपति मुहुत्तं तुण्ही हुत्वा आयस्मन्तं कामभुं एतदवोच:
“Tena hi, bhante, muhuttaṁ āgamehi yāvassa atthaṁ pekkhāmī”ti. Atha kho citto gahapati muhuttaṁ tuṇhī hutvā āyasmantaṁ kāmabhuṁ etadavoca:
“Well then, sir, please wait a moment while I consider the meaning of this.” Then after a short silence Citta said to Kāmabhū:
“‘नेलङ्गन्ऽति खो, भन्ते, सीलानमेतं अधिवचनं।
“‘Nelaṅgan’ti kho, bhante, sīlānametaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
“Sir, ‘flawless wheel’ is a term for ethics.
‘सेतपच्छादोऽति खो, भन्ते, विमुत्तिया एतं अधिवचनं।
‘Setapacchādo’ti kho, bhante, vimuttiyā etaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘White canopy’ is a term for freedom.
‘एकारोऽति खो, भन्ते, सतिया एतं अधिवचनं।
‘Ekāro’ti kho, bhante, satiyā etaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘One spoke’ is a term for mindfulness.
‘वत्ततीऽति खो, भन्ते, अभिक्कमपटिक्कमस्सेतं अधिवचनं।
‘Vattatī’ti kho, bhante, abhikkamapaṭikkamassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘Rolls on’ is a term for going forward and coming back.
‘रथोऽति खो, भन्ते, इमस्सेतं चातुमहाभूतिकस्स कायस्स अधिवचनं मातापेत्तिकसम्भवस्स ओदनकुम्मासूपचयस्स अनिच्चुच्छादनपरिमद्दनभेदनविद्धंसनधम्मस्स।
‘Ratho’ti kho, bhante, imassetaṁ cātumahābhūtikassa kāyassa adhivacanaṁ mātāpettikasambhavassa odanakummāsūpacayassa aniccucchādanaparimaddanabhedanaviddhaṁsanadhammassa.
‘Chariot’ is a term for this body made up of the four primary elements, produced by mother and father, built up from rice and porridge, liable to impermanence, to wearing away and erosion, to breaking up and destruction.
रागो खो, भन्ते, नीघो, दोसो नीघो, मोहो नीघो। ते खीणासवस्स भिक्खुनो पहीना उच्छिन्नमूला तालावत्थुकता अनभावङ्कता आयतिं अनुप्पादधम्मा। तस्मा खीणासवो भिक्खु ‘अनीघोऽति वुच्चति।
Rāgo kho, bhante, nīgho, doso nīgho, moho nīgho. Te khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno pahīnā ucchinnamūlā tālāvatthukatā anabhāvaṅkatā āyatiṁ anuppādadhammā. Tasmā khīṇāsavo bhikkhu ‘anīgho’ti vuccati.
Greed, hate, and delusion are troubles. A bhikkhu who has ended the defilements has given these up, cut them off at the root, made them like a palm stump, and obliterated them, so they are unable to arise in the future. That’s why a bhikkhu who has ended the defilements is called ‘untroubled’.
‘आयन्तन्ऽति खो, भन्ते, अरहतो एतं अधिवचनं।
‘Āyantan’ti kho, bhante, arahato etaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘The one who comes’ is a term for the perfected one.
‘सोतोऽति खो, भन्ते, तण्हायेतं अधिवचनं। सा खीणासवस्स भिक्खुनो पहीना उच्छिन्नमूला तालावत्थुकता अनभावङ्कता आयतिं अनुप्पादधम्मा। तस्मा खीणासवो भिक्खु ‘छिन्नसोतोऽति वुच्चति।
‘Soto’ti kho, bhante, taṇhāyetaṁ adhivacanaṁ. Sā khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno pahīnā ucchinnamūlā tālāvatthukatā anabhāvaṅkatā āyatiṁ anuppādadhammā. Tasmā khīṇāsavo bhikkhu ‘chinnasoto’ti vuccati.
‘Stream’ is a term for craving. A bhikkhu who has ended the defilements has given this up, cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, and obliterated it, so it’s unable to arise in the future. That’s why a bhikkhu who has ended the defilements is said to have ‘cut the stream’.
रागो खो, भन्ते, बन्धनं, दोसो बन्धनं, मोहो बन्धनं। ते खीणासवस्स भिक्खुनो पहीना उच्छिन्नमूला तालावत्थुकता अनभावङ्कता आयतिं अनुप्पादधम्मा। तस्मा खीणासवो भिक्खु ‘अबन्धनोऽति वुच्चति।
Rāgo kho, bhante, bandhanaṁ, doso bandhanaṁ, moho bandhanaṁ. Te khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno pahīnā ucchinnamūlā tālāvatthukatā anabhāvaṅkatā āyatiṁ anuppādadhammā. Tasmā khīṇāsavo bhikkhu ‘abandhano’ti vuccati.

Iti kho, bhante, yaṁ taṁ bhagavatā vuttaṁ:
So, sir, that’s how I understand the detailed meaning of what the Buddha said in brief:
‘नेलङ्गो सेतपच्छादो, एकारो वत्तती रथो; अनीघं पस्स आयन्तं, छिन्नसोतं अबन्धनन्ऽति।
‘Nelaṅgo setapacchādo, ekāro vattatī ratho; Anīghaṁ passa āyantaṁ, chinnasotaṁ abandhanan’ti.
‘With flawless wheel and white canopy, the one-spoke chariot rolls on. See it come, untroubled, with stream cut, unbound.’”
इमस्स खो, भन्ते, भगवता सङ्खित्तेन भासितस्स एवं वित्थारेन अत्थं आजानामी”ति।
Imassa kho, bhante, bhagavatā saṅkhittena bhāsitassa evaṁ vitthārena atthaṁ ājānāmī”ti.
“लाभा ते, गहपति, सुलद्धं ते, गहपति। यस्स ते गम्भीरे बुद्धवचने पञ्ञाचक्खु कमती”ति।
“Lābhā te, gahapati, suladdhaṁ te, gahapati. Yassa te gambhīre buddhavacane paññācakkhu kamatī”ti.
“You’re fortunate, householder, so very fortunate, to traverse the Buddha’s deep teachings with the eye of wisdom.”
