Paṭhamamahāpathavīsutta
The Earth (1st)
“सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, पुरिसो महापथविया सत्त कोलट्ठिमत्तियो गुळिका उपनिक्खिपेय्य।
“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso mahāpathaviyā1 satta kolaṭṭhimattiyo guḷikā upanikkhipeyya.
“Bhikkhus, suppose a person was to place seven clay balls the size of jujube seeds on the great earth.
तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, कतमं नु खो बहुतरं—या वा सत्त कोलट्ठिमत्तियो गुळिका उपनिक्खित्ता, अयं वा महापथवी”ति?
Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, katamaṁ nu kho bahutaraṁ—yā vā satta kolaṭṭhimattiyo guḷikā upanikkhittā, ayaṁ vā mahāpathavī”ti?
What do you think, bhikkhus? Which is more: the seven clay balls the size of jujube seeds, or the great earth?”
“एतदेव, भन्ते, बहुतरं, यदिदं—महापथवी; अप्पमत्तिका सत्त कोलट्ठिमत्तियो गुळिका उपनिक्खित्ता। सङ्खम्पि न उपेन्ति, उपनिधम्पि न उपेन्ति, कलभागम्पि न उपेन्ति महापथविं उपनिधाय सत्त कोलट्ठिमत्तियो गुळिका उपनिक्खित्ता”ति।
“Etadeva, bhante, bahutaraṁ, yadidaṁ—mahāpathavī; appamattikā satta kolaṭṭhimattiyo guḷikā upanikkhittā. Saṅkhampi na upenti, upanidhampi na upenti, kalabhāgampi na upenti mahāpathaviṁ upanidhāya satta kolaṭṭhimattiyo guḷikā upanikkhittā”ti.
“Sir, the great earth is certainly more. The seven clay balls the size of jujube seeds are tiny. Compared to the great earth, they don’t count, there’s no comparison, they’re not worth a fraction.”
“एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, अरियसावकस्स …पे…
“Evameva kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa …pe…
“In the same way, for a noble disciple …
योगो करणीयो”ति।
yogo karaṇīyo”ti.
