Overflowing Merit (1st)
सावत्थिनिदानं।
Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
“चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, पुञ्ञाभिसन्दा कुसलाभिसन्दा सुखस्साहारा। कतमे चत्तारो? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको बुद्धे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागतो होति—इतिपि सो भगवा …पे… सत्था देवमनुस्सानं बुद्धो भगवाति। अयं पठमो पुञ्ञाभिसन्दो कुसलाभिसन्दो सुखस्साहारो।
“Cattārome, bhikkhave, puññābhisandā kusalābhisandā sukhassāhārā. Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti—itipi so bhagavā …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavāti. Ayaṁ paṭhamo puññābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro.
“Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness that nurture happiness. What four? Firstly, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … This is the first kind of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness that nurtures happiness.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको धम्मे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागतो होति—स्वाक्खातो भगवता धम्मो …पे… पच्चत्तं वेदितब्बो विञ्ञूहीति। अयं दुतियो पुञ्ञाभिसन्दो कुसलाभिसन्दो सुखस्साहारो।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti—svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo …pe… paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhīti. Ayaṁ dutiyo puññābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro.
Furthermore, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the teaching … This is the second kind of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness that nurtures happiness.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको सङ्घे अवेच्चप्पसादेन समन्नागतो होति—सुप्पटिपन्नो भगवतो सावकसङ्घो …पे… अनुत्तरं पुञ्ञक्खेत्तं लोकस्साति। अयं ततियो पुञ्ञाभिसन्दो कुसलाभिसन्दो सुखस्साहारो।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saṅghe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti—suppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho …pe… anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassāti. Ayaṁ tatiyo puññābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro.
Furthermore, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Saṅgha … This is the third kind of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness that nurtures happiness.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको अरियकन्तेहि सीलेहि समन्नागतो होति अखण्डेहि …पे… समाधिसंवत्तनिकेहि। अयं चतुत्थो पुञ्ञाभिसन्दो कुसलाभिसन्दो सुखस्साहारो। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो पुञ्ञाभिसन्दा कुसलाभिसन्दा सुखस्साहारा”ति।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato hoti akhaṇḍehi …pe… samādhisaṁvattanikehi. Ayaṁ catuttho puññābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro. Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro puññābhisandā kusalābhisandā sukhassāhārā”ti.
Furthermore, a noble disciple’s ethical conduct is loved by the noble ones, unbroken, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by sensible people, not mistaken, and leading to immersion. This is the fourth kind of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness that nurtures happiness. These are the four kinds of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness that nurture happiness.”
