Paṭhamasūriyasutta
The Simile of the Sun (1st)
“सूरियस्स, भिक्खवे, उदयतो एतं पुब्बङ्गमं एतं पुब्बनिमित्तं, यदिदं—अरुणुग्गं।
“Sūriyassa, bhikkhave, udayato etaṁ pubbaṅgamaṁ etaṁ pubbanimittaṁ, yadidaṁ—aruṇuggaṁ.
“Bhikkhus, the dawn is the forerunner and precursor of the sunrise.
एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो चतुन्नं अरियसच्चानं यथाभूतं अभिसमयाय एतं पुब्बङ्गमं एतं पुब्बनिमित्तं, यदिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि। तस्सेतं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो पाटिकङ्खं: ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानिस्सति …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति यथाभूतं पजानिस्सति।
Evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno catunnaṁ ariyasaccānaṁ yathābhūtaṁ abhisamayāya etaṁ pubbaṅgamaṁ etaṁ pubbanimittaṁ, yadidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi. Tassetaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno pāṭikaṅkhaṁ: ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānissati …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānissati.
In the same way, right view is the forerunner and precursor of truly comprehending the four noble truths. A bhikkhu with right view can expect to truly understand: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’.
तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति योगो करणीयो …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति योगो करणीयो”ति।
Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti.
That’s why you should practice meditation …”
