    “पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, इन्द्रियानि। कतमानि पञ्च? सद्धिन्द्रियं …पे… पञ्ञिन्द्रियं।

    “Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, indriyāni. Katamāni pañca? Saddhindriyaṁ …pe… paññindriyaṁ.

    “Bhikkhus, there are these five faculties. What five? The faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

    कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, सद्धिन्द्रियं? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको सद्धो होति, सद्दहति तथागतस्स बोधिं: ‘इतिपि सो भगवा अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो विज्जाचरणसम्पन्नो सुगतो लोकविदू अनुत्तरो पुरिसदम्मसारथि सत्था देवमनुस्सानं बुद्धो भगवाऽति—इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सद्धिन्द्रियं।

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiṁ: ‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti—idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaṁ.

    And what is the faculty of faith? It’s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized One’s awakening: ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’ This is called the faculty of faith.

    कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, वीरियिन्द्रियं? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको आरद्धवीरियो विहरति अकुसलानं धम्मानं पहानाय, कुसलानं धम्मानं उपसम्पदाय, थामवा दळ्हपरक्कमो अनिक्खित्तधुरो कुसलेसु धम्मेसु—इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, वीरियिन्द्रियं।

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, vīriyindriyaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako āraddhavīriyo viharati akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya, kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ upasampadāya, thāmavā daḷhaparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu—idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vīriyindriyaṁ.

    And what is the faculty of energy? It’s when a noble disciple lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They’re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities. This is called the faculty of energy.

    कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, सतिन्द्रियं? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको सतिमा होति परमेन सतिनेपक्केन समन्नागतो चिरकतम्पि चिरभासितम्पि सरिता अनुस्सरिता—इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सतिन्द्रियं।

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, satindriyaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako satimā hoti paramena satinepakkena samannāgato cirakatampi cirabhāsitampi saritā anussaritā—idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, satindriyaṁ.

    And what is the faculty of mindfulness? It’s when a noble disciple is mindful. They have utmost mindfulness and alertness, and can remember and recall what was said and done long ago. This is called the faculty of mindfulness.

    कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, समाधिन्द्रियं? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको वोस्सग्गारम्मणं करित्वा लभति समाधिं, लभति चित्तस्स एकग्गतं—इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, समाधिन्द्रियं।

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, samādhindriyaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako vossaggārammaṇaṁ karitvā labhati samādhiṁ, labhati cittassa ekaggataṁ—idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, samādhindriyaṁ.

    And what is the faculty of immersion? It’s when a noble disciple, relying on letting go, gains immersion, gains unification of mind. This is called the faculty of immersion.

    कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, पञ्ञिन्द्रियं? इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको पञ्ञवा होति उदयत्थगामिनिया पञ्ञाय समन्नागतो अरियाय निब्बेधिकाय, सम्मा दुक्खक्खयगामिनिया—इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, पञ्ञिन्द्रियं।

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, paññindriyaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako paññavā hoti udayatthagāminiyā paññāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya, sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā—idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, paññindriyaṁ.

    And what is the faculty of wisdom? It’s when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering. This is called the faculty of wisdom.

    इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चिन्द्रियानी”ति।

    Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañcindriyānī”ti.

    These are the five faculties.”
