The Invitation to Admonish
एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति पुब्बारामे मिगारमातुपासादे महता भिक्खुसङ्घेन सद्धिं पञ्चमत्तेहि भिक्खुसतेहि सब्बेहेव अरहन्तेहि। तेन खो पन समयेन भगवा तदहुपोसथे पन्नरसे पवारणाय भिक्खुसङ्घपरिवुतो अब्भोकासे निसिन्नो होति।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sabbeheva arahantehi. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā tadahuposathe pannarase pavāraṇāya bhikkhusaṅghaparivuto abbhokāse nisinno hoti.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in the Eastern Monastery, the stilt longhouse of Migāra’s mother, together with a large Saṅgha of around five hundred monks, all of whom were perfected ones. Now, at that time it was the Uposatha day—the full moon on the fifteenth day—and the Buddha was sitting in the open surrounded by the Saṅgha of monks for the invitation to admonish.
अथ खो भगवा तुण्हीभूतं भिक्खुसङ्घं अनुविलोकेत्वा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “हन्द दानि, भिक्खवे, पवारेमि वो। न च मे किञ्चि गरहथ कायिकं वा वाचसिकं वा”ति।
Atha kho bhagavā tuṇhībhūtaṁ bhikkhusaṅghaṁ anuviloketvā bhikkhū āmantesi: “handa dāni, bhikkhave, pavāremi vo. Na ca me kiñci garahatha kāyikaṁ vā vācasikaṁ vā”ti.
Then the Buddha looked around the Saṅgha of monks, who were silent. He addressed them: “Come now, monks, I invite you all: Is there anything I’ve done by way of body or speech that you would criticize?”
एवं वुत्ते, आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो उट्ठायासना एकंसं उत्तरासङ्गं करित्वा येन भगवा तेनञ्जलिं पणामेत्वा भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “न खो मयं, भन्ते, भगवतो किञ्चि गरहाम कायिकं वा वाचसिकं वा। भगवा हि, भन्ते, अनुप्पन्नस्स मग्गस्स उप्पादेता, असञ्जातस्स मग्गस्स सञ्जनेता, अनक्खातस्स मग्गस्स अक्खाता, मग्गञ्ञू मग्गविदू मग्गकोविदो। मग्गानुगा च, भन्ते, एतरहि सावका विहरन्ति पच्छा समन्नागता; अहञ्च खो, भन्ते, भगवन्तं पवारेमि। न च मे भगवा किञ्चि गरहति कायिकं वा वाचसिकं वा”ति।
Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā sāriputto uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “na kho mayaṁ, bhante, bhagavato kiñci garahāma kāyikaṁ vā vācasikaṁ vā. Bhagavā hi, bhante, anuppannassa maggassa uppādetā, asañjātassa maggassa sañjanetā, anakkhātassa maggassa akkhātā, maggaññū maggavidū maggakovido. Maggānugā ca, bhante, etarahi sāvakā viharanti pacchā samannāgatā; ahañca kho, bhante, bhagavantaṁ pavāremi. Na ca me bhagavā kiñci garahati kāyikaṁ vā vācasikaṁ vā”ti.
When he had spoken, Venerable Sāriputta got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said: “There is nothing, sir, that you’ve done by way of body or speech that we would criticize. For the Blessed One gave rise to the unarisen path, gave birth to the unborn path, and explained the unexplained path. He is the knower of the path, the discoverer of the path, the expert on the path. And now the disciples live following the path; they acquire it later. And sir, I invite the Blessed One. Is there anything I’ve done by way of body or speech that you would criticize?”
“न ख्वाहं ते, सारिपुत्त, किञ्चि गरहामि कायिकं वा वाचसिकं वा। पण्डितो त्वं, सारिपुत्त, महापञ्ञो त्वं, सारिपुत्त, पुथुपञ्ञो त्वं, सारिपुत्त, हासपञ्ञो त्वं, सारिपुत्त, जवनपञ्ञो त्वं, सारिपुत्त, तिक्खपञ्ञो त्वं, सारिपुत्त, निब्बेधिकपञ्ञो त्वं, सारिपुत्त। सेय्यथापि, सारिपुत्त, रञ्ञो चक्कवत्तिस्स जेट्ठपुत्तो पितरा पवत्तितं चक्कं सम्मदेव अनुप्पवत्तेति; एवमेव खो त्वं, सारिपुत्त, मया अनुत्तरं धम्मचक्कं पवत्तितं सम्मदेव अनुप्पवत्तेसी”ति।
“Na khvāhaṁ te, sāriputta, kiñci garahāmi kāyikaṁ vā vācasikaṁ vā. Paṇḍito tvaṁ, sāriputta, mahāpañño tvaṁ, sāriputta, puthupañño tvaṁ, sāriputta, hāsapañño tvaṁ, sāriputta, javanapañño tvaṁ, sāriputta, tikkhapañño tvaṁ, sāriputta, nibbedhikapañño tvaṁ, sāriputta. Seyyathāpi, sāriputta, rañño cakkavattissa jeṭṭhaputto pitarā pavattitaṁ cakkaṁ sammadeva anuppavatteti; evameva kho tvaṁ, sāriputta, mayā anuttaraṁ dhammacakkaṁ pavattitaṁ sammadeva anuppavattesī”ti.
“There is nothing, Sāriputta, that you’ve done by way of body or speech that I would criticize. Sāriputta, you are astute. You have great wisdom, widespread wisdom, laughing wisdom, swift wisdom, sharp wisdom, penetrating wisdom. A wheel-turning monarch’s oldest son rightly keeps wielding the power set in motion by his father. In the same way, Sāriputta rightly keeps rolling the supreme Wheel of Dhamma that was rolled forth by me.”
“नो चे किर मे, भन्ते, भगवा किञ्चि गरहति कायिकं वा वाचसिकं वा। इमेसं पन, भन्ते, भगवा पञ्चन्नं भिक्खुसतानं न किञ्चि गरहति कायिकं वा वाचसिकं वा”ति।
“No ce kira me, bhante, bhagavā kiñci garahati kāyikaṁ vā vācasikaṁ vā. Imesaṁ pana, bhante, bhagavā pañcannaṁ bhikkhusatānaṁ na kiñci garahati kāyikaṁ vā vācasikaṁ vā”ti.
“Since it seems I have done nothing worthy of the Blessed One’s criticism, is there anything these five hundred monks have done by way of body or speech that you would criticize?”
“इमेसम्पि ख्वाहं, सारिपुत्त, पञ्चन्नं भिक्खुसतानं न किञ्चि गरहामि कायिकं वा वाचसिकं वा। इमेसञ्हि, सारिपुत्त, पञ्चन्नं भिक्खुसतानं सट्ठि भिक्खू तेविज्जा, सट्ठि भिक्खू छळभिञ्ञा, सट्ठि भिक्खू उभतोभागविमुत्ता, अथ इतरे पञ्ञाविमुत्ता”ति।
“Imesampi khvāhaṁ, sāriputta, pañcannaṁ bhikkhusatānaṁ na kiñci garahāmi kāyikaṁ vā vācasikaṁ vā. Imesañhi, sāriputta, pañcannaṁ bhikkhusatānaṁ saṭṭhi bhikkhū tevijjā, saṭṭhi bhikkhū chaḷabhiññā, saṭṭhi bhikkhū ubhatobhāgavimuttā, atha itare paññāvimuttā”ti.
“There is nothing, Sāriputta, that these five hundred monks have done by way of body or speech that I would criticize. For of these five hundred monks, sixty have the three knowledges, sixty have the six direct knowledges, sixty are freed both ways, and the rest are freed by wisdom.”
अथ खो आयस्मा वङ्गीसो उट्ठायासना एकंसं उत्तरासङ्गं करित्वा येन भगवा तेनञ्जलिं पणामेत्वा भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “पटिभाति मं, भगवा, पटिभाति मं, सुगता”ति।
Atha kho āyasmā vaṅgīso uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “paṭibhāti maṁ, bhagavā, paṭibhāti maṁ, sugatā”ti.
Then Venerable Vaṅgīsa got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said, “I feel inspired to speak, Blessed One! I feel inspired to speak, Holy One!”
“पटिभातु तं, वङ्गीसा”ति भगवा अवोच।
“Paṭibhātu taṁ, vaṅgīsā”ti bhagavā avoca.
“Then speak as you feel inspired,” said the Buddha.
अथ खो आयस्मा वङ्गीसो भगवन्तं सम्मुखा सारुप्पाहि गाथाहि अभित्थवि:
Atha kho āyasmā vaṅgīso bhagavantaṁ sammukhā sāruppāhi gāthāhi abhitthavi:
Then Vaṅgīsa extolled the Buddha in his presence with fitting verses:
“अज्ज पन्नरसे विसुद्धिया, भिक्खू पञ्चसता समागता; संयोजनबन्धनच्छिदा, अनीघा खीणपुनब्भवा इसी।
“Ajja pannarase visuddhiyā, Bhikkhū pañcasatā samāgatā; Saṁyojanabandhanacchidā, Anīghā khīṇapunabbhavā isī.
“Today, on the Uposatha day of the fifteenth, five hundred monks have gathered together
to purify their precepts. These untroubled sageshave cut off their fetters and bonds, they will not be reborn again.
चक्कवत्ती यथा राजा, अमच्चपरिवारितो; समन्ता अनुपरियेति, सागरन्तं महिं इमं।
Cakkavattī yathā rājā, amaccaparivārito; Samantā anupariyeti, sāgarantaṁ mahiṁ imaṁ.
Just as a wheel-turning monarch surrounded by ministers travels all around this land that’s girt by sea.
एवं विजितसङ्गामं, सत्थवाहं अनुत्तरं; सावका पयिरुपासन्ति, तेविज्जा मच्चुहायिनो।
Evaṁ vijitasaṅgāmaṁ, satthavāhaṁ anuttaraṁ; Sāvakā payirupāsanti, tevijjā maccuhāyino.
So disciples with the three knowledges, conquerors of death, revere the winner of the battle, the unsurpassed caravan leader.
सब्बे भगवतो पुत्ता, पलापेत्थ न विज्जति; तण्हासल्लस्स हन्तारं, वन्दे आदिच्चबन्धुनन्”ति।
Sabbe bhagavato puttā, palāpettha na vijjati; Taṇhāsallassa hantāraṁ, vande ādiccabandhunan”ti.
All are sons of the Blessed One—there is no rubbish here. I bow to the kinsman of the Sun, destroyer of the dart of craving.”
