    Pubbesambodhasutta

    Before Awakening

    सावत्थियं विहरति।

    Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

    At Sāvatthī.

    “पुब्बेव मे, भिक्खवे, सम्बोधा अनभिसम्बुद्धस्स बोधिसत्तस्सेव सतो एतदहोसि: ‘को नु खो पथवीधातुया अस्सादो, को आदीनवो, किं निस्सरणं; को आपोधातुया अस्सादो, को आदीनवो, किं निस्सरणं; को तेजोधातुया अस्सादो, को आदीनवो, किं निस्सरणं; को वायोधातुया अस्सादो, को आदीनवो, किं निस्सरणन्ऽति?

    “Pubbeva me, bhikkhave, sambodhā anabhisambuddhassa bodhisattasseva sato etadahosi: ‘ko nu kho pathavīdhātuyā assādo, ko ādīnavo, kiṁ nissaraṇaṁ; ko āpodhātuyā assādo, ko ādīnavo, kiṁ nissaraṇaṁ; ko tejodhātuyā assādo, ko ādīnavo, kiṁ nissaraṇaṁ; ko vāyodhātuyā assādo, ko ādīnavo, kiṁ nissaraṇan’ti?

    “Bhikkhus, before my awakening—when I was still unawakened but intent on awakening—I thought: ‘What’s the gratification, the drawback, and the escape when it comes to the earth element … the water element … the fire element … and the air element?’

    तस्स मय्हं, भिक्खवे, एतदहोसि: ‘यं खो पथवीधातुं पटिच्च उप्पज्जति सुखं सोमनस्सं, अयं पथवीधातुया अस्सादो; यं पथवीधातु अनिच्चा दुक्खा विपरिणामधम्मा, अयं पथवीधातुया आदीनवो; यो पथवीधातुया छन्दरागविनयो छन्दरागप्पहानं, इदं पथवीधातुया निस्सरणं। यं आपोधातुं पटिच्च …पे… यं तेजोधातुं पटिच्च …पे… यं वायोधातुं पटिच्च उप्पज्जति सुखं सोमनस्सं, अयं वायोधातुया अस्सादो; यं वायोधातु अनिच्चा दुक्खा विपरिणामधम्मा, अयं वायोधातुया आदीनवो; यो वायोधातुया छन्दरागविनयो छन्दरागप्पहानं, इदं वायोधातुया निस्सरणंऽ।

    Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, etadahosi: ‘yaṁ kho pathavīdhātuṁ paṭicca uppajjati sukhaṁ somanassaṁ, ayaṁ pathavīdhātuyā assādo; yaṁ1 pathavīdhātu aniccā dukkhā vipariṇāmadhammā, ayaṁ pathavīdhātuyā ādīnavo; yo pathavīdhātuyā chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaṁ, idaṁ pathavīdhātuyā nissaraṇaṁ. Yaṁ āpodhātuṁ paṭicca …pe… yaṁ tejodhātuṁ paṭicca …pe… yaṁ vāyodhātuṁ paṭicca uppajjati sukhaṁ somanassaṁ, ayaṁ vāyodhātuyā assādo; yaṁ vāyodhātu aniccā dukkhā vipariṇāmadhammā, ayaṁ vāyodhātuyā ādīnavo; yo vāyodhātuyā chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaṁ, idaṁ vāyodhātuyā nissaraṇaṁ’.

    Then it occurred to me: ‘The pleasure and happiness that arise from the earth element: this is its gratification. That the earth element is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback. Removing and giving up desire and greed for the earth element: this is its escape. The pleasure and happiness that arise from the water element … The pleasure and happiness that arise from the fire element … The pleasure and happiness that arise from the air element: this is its gratification. That the air element is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback. Removing and giving up desire and greed for the air element: this is its escape.’

    यावकीवञ्चाहं, भिक्खवे, इमासं चतुन्नं धातूनं एवं अस्सादञ्च अस्सादतो आदीनवञ्च आदीनवतो निस्सरणञ्च निस्सरणतो यथाभूतं न अब्भञ्ञासिं, नेव तावाहं, भिक्खवे, सदेवके लोके समारके सब्रह्मके सस्समणब्राह्मणिया पजाय सदेवमनुस्साय अनुत्तरं सम्मासम्बोधिं अभिसम्बुद्धोति पच्चञ्ञासिं।

    Yāvakīvañcāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ catunnaṁ dhātūnaṁ evaṁ assādañca assādato ādīnavañca ādīnavato nissaraṇañca nissaraṇato yathābhūtaṁ na abbhaññāsiṁ, neva tāvāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya anuttaraṁ sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambuddhoti2 paccaññāsiṁ.

    As long as I didn’t truly understand these four elements’ gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I didn’t announce my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.

    यतो च ख्वाहं, भिक्खवे, इमासं चतुन्नं धातूनं एवं अस्सादञ्च अस्सादतो आदीनवञ्च आदीनवतो निस्सरणञ्च निस्सरणतो यथाभूतं अब्भञ्ञासिं, अथाहं, भिक्खवे, सदेवके लोके समारके सब्रह्मके सस्समणब्राह्मणिया पजाय सदेवमनुस्साय अनुत्तरं सम्मासम्बोधिं अभिसम्बुद्धोति पच्चञ्ञासिं।

    Yato ca khvāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imāsaṁ catunnaṁ dhātūnaṁ evaṁ assādañca assādato ādīnavañca ādīnavato nissaraṇañca nissaraṇato yathābhūtaṁ abbhaññāsiṁ, athāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya anuttaraṁ sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambuddhoti paccaññāsiṁ.

    But when I did truly understand these four elements’ gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I announced my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.

    ञाणञ्च पन मे दस्सनं उदपादि: ‘अकुप्पा मे विमुत्ति, अयमन्तिमा जाति, नत्थि दानि पुनब्भवोऽ”ति।

    Ñāṇañca pana me dassanaṁ udapādi: ‘akuppā me vimutti, ayamantimā jāti, natthi dāni punabbhavo’”ti.

    Knowledge and vision arose in me: ‘My freedom is unshakable; this is my last rebirth; now there’ll be no more future lives.’”
