Puggalasutta
A Single Person
एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति गिज्झकूटे पब्बते। तत्र खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “भिक्खवो”ति।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakūṭe pabbate. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “bhikkhavo”ti.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”
“भदन्ते”ति ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं। भगवा एतदवोच:
“Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca:
“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“अनमतग्गोयं, भिक्खवे, संसारो …पे… एकपुग्गलस्स, भिक्खवे, कप्पं सन्धावतो संसरतो सिया एवं महा अट्ठिकङ्कलो अट्ठिपुञ्जो अट्ठिरासि यथायं वेपुल्लो पब्बतो, सचे संहारको अस्स, सम्भतञ्च न विनस्सेय्य।
“Anamataggoyaṁ, bhikkhave, saṁsāro …pe… ekapuggalassa, bhikkhave, kappaṁ sandhāvato saṁsarato siyā evaṁ mahā aṭṭhikaṅkalo aṭṭhipuñjo aṭṭhirāsi yathāyaṁ vepullo pabbato, sace saṁhārako assa, sambhatañca na vinasseyya.
“Bhikkhus, transmigration has no known beginning. … One person roaming and transmigrating for an eon would amass a heap of bones the size of this Mount Vepulla, if they were gathered together and not lost.
तं किस्स हेतु? अनमतग्गोयं, भिक्खवे, संसारो …पे… अलं विमुच्चितुन्”ति।
Taṁ kissa hetu? Anamataggoyaṁ, bhikkhave, saṁsāro …pe… alaṁ vimuccitun”ti.
Why is that? Transmigration has no known beginning. … This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.”
इदमवोच भगवा। इदं वत्वान सुगतो अथापरं एतदवोच सत्था:
Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:
That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
“एकस्सेकेन कप्पेन, पुग्गलस्सट्ठिसञ्चयो; सिया पब्बतसमो रासि, इति वुत्तं महेसिना।
“Ekassekena kappena, puggalassaṭṭhisañcayo; Siyā pabbatasamo rāsi, iti vuttaṁ mahesinā.
“If the bones of a single person for a single eon were gathered up, they’d make a pile the size of a mountain: so said the great seer.
सो खो पनायं अक्खातो, वेपुल्लो पब्बतो महा; उत्तरो गिज्झकूटस्स, मगधानं गिरिब्बजे।
So kho panāyaṁ akkhāto, vepullo pabbato mahā; Uttaro gijjhakūṭassa, magadhānaṁ giribbaje.
And this is declared to be as huge as Mount Vepulla, higher than the Vulture’s Peak in the Magadhan mountain range.
यतो च अरियसच्चानि, सम्मप्पञ्ञाय पस्सति; दुक्खं दुक्खसमुप्पादं, दुक्खस्स च अतिक्कमं; अरियं चट्ठङ्गिकं मग्गं, दुक्खूपसमगामिनं।
Yato ca ariyasaccāni, sammappaññāya passati; Dukkhaṁ dukkhasamuppādaṁ, dukkhassa ca atikkamaṁ; Ariyaṁ caṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ, dukkhūpasamagāminaṁ.
But then, with right understanding, a person sees the noble truths—suffering, suffering’s origin, suffering’s transcendence, and the noble eightfold path that leads to the stilling of suffering.
स सत्तक्खत्तुंपरमं, सन्धावित्वान पुग्गलो; दुक्खस्सन्तकरो होति, सब्बसंयोजनक्खया”ति।
Sa sattakkhattuṁparamaṁ, sandhāvitvāna puggalo; Dukkhassantakaro hoti, sabbasaṁyojanakkhayā”ti.
After roaming on seven times at most, that person makes an end of suffering, with the ending of all fetters.”

Tassuddānaṁ
तिणकट्ठञ्च पथवी, अस्सु खीरञ्च पब्बतं; सासपा सावका गङ्गा, दण्डो च पुग्गलेन चाति।
Tiṇakaṭṭhañca pathavī, assu khīrañca pabbataṁ; Sāsapā sāvakā gaṅgā, daṇḍo ca puggalena cāti.
