    अथ खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो राजानं पसेनदिं कोसलं भगवा एतदवोच:

    Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

    Then King Pasenadi of Kosala went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

    “चत्तारोमे, महाराज पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे चत्तारो?

    “cattārome, mahārāja puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame cattāro?

    “Great king, these four people are found in the world. What four?

      तमोतमपरायनो,

      Tamotamaparāyano,

      The dark bound for darkness,

    तमोजोतिपरायनो,

    tamojotiparāyano,

    the dark bound for light,

    जोतितमपरायनो,

    jotitamaparāyano,

    the light bound for darkness,

    जोतिजोतिपरायनो।

    jotijotiparāyano.

    and the light bound for light.

    कथञ्च, महाराज पुग्गलो तमोतमपरायनो होति? इध, महाराज, एकच्चो पुग्गलो नीचे कुले पच्चाजातो होति, चण्डालकुले वा वेनकुले वा नेसादकुले वा रथकारकुले वा पुक्कुसकुले वा दलिद्दे अप्पन्नपानभोजने कसिरवुत्तिके, यत्थ कसिरेन घासच्छादो लब्भति। सो च होति दुब्बण्णो दुद्दसिको ओकोटिमको बव्हाबाधो काणो वा कुणी वा खञ्जो वा पक्खहतो वा, न लाभी अन्नस्स पानस्स वत्थस्स यानस्स मालागन्धविलेपनस्स सेय्यावसथपदीपेय्यस्स। सो कायेन दुच्चरितं चरति, वाचाय दुच्चरितं चरति, मनसा दुच्चरितं चरति। सो कायेन दुच्चरितं चरित्वा वाचाय दुच्चरितं चरित्वा मनसा दुच्चरितं चरित्वा, कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं निरयं उपपज्जति।

    Kathañca, mahārāja puggalo tamotamaparāyano hoti? Idha, mahārāja, ekacco puggalo nīce kule paccājāto hoti, caṇḍālakule vā venakule1 vā nesādakule vā rathakārakule vā pukkusakule vā dalidde appannapānabhojane kasiravuttike, yattha kasirena ghāsacchādo labbhati. So ca hoti dubbaṇṇo duddasiko okoṭimako bavhābādho2 kāṇo vā kuṇī vā khañjo vā pakkhahato vā, na lābhī annassa pānassa vatthassa yānassa mālāgandhavilepanassa seyyāvasathapadīpeyyassa. So kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, manasā duccaritaṁ carati. So kāyena duccaritaṁ caritvā vācāya duccaritaṁ caritvā manasā duccaritaṁ caritvā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati.

    And how is a person dark and bound for darkness? It’s when some person is reborn in a low family—a family of outcastes, bamboo-workers, hunters, chariot-makers, or waste-collectors—poor, with little to eat or drink, where life is tough, and food and shelter are hard to find. And they’re ugly, unsightly, deformed, sickly—one-eyed, crippled, lame, or half-paralyzed. They don’t get to have food, drink, clothes, and vehicles; garlands, perfumes, and makeup; or bed, house, and lighting. And they do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

    सेय्यथापि, महाराज, पुरिसो अन्धकारा वा अन्धकारं गच्छेय्य, तमा वा तमं गच्छेय्य, लोहितमला वा लोहितमलं गच्छेय्य। तथूपमाहं, महाराज, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि। एवं खो, महाराज, पुग्गलो तमोतमपरायनो होति।

    Seyyathāpi, mahārāja, puriso andhakārā vā andhakāraṁ gaccheyya, tamā vā tamaṁ gaccheyya, lohitamalā vā lohitamalaṁ gaccheyya. Tathūpamāhaṁ, mahārāja, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi. Evaṁ kho, mahārāja, puggalo tamotamaparāyano hoti.

    This person is like someone who goes from darkness to darkness, from blackness to blackness, from bloodstain to bloodstain. That’s how a person is dark and bound for darkness.

    सेय्यथापि, महाराज, पुरिसो पथविया वा पल्लङ्कं आरोहेय्य, पल्लङ्का वा अस्सपिट्ठिं आरोहेय्य, अस्सपिट्ठिया वा हत्थिक्खन्धं आरोहेय्य, हत्थिक्खन्धा वा पासादं आरोहेय्य। तथूपमाहं, महाराज, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि। एवं खो, महाराज, पुग्गलो तमोजोतिपरायनो होति।

    Seyyathāpi, mahārāja, puriso pathaviyā vā pallaṅkaṁ āroheyya, pallaṅkā vā assapiṭṭhiṁ āroheyya, assapiṭṭhiyā vā hatthikkhandhaṁ āroheyya, hatthikkhandhā vā pāsādaṁ āroheyya. Tathūpamāhaṁ, mahārāja, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi. Evaṁ kho, mahārāja, puggalo tamojotiparāyano hoti.

    This person is like someone who ascends from the ground to a couch; from a couch to horseback; from horseback to an elephant; and from an elephant to a stilt longhouse. That’s how a person is dark and bound for light.

    कथञ्च, महाराज, पुग्गलो जोतितमपरायनो होति? इध, महाराज, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उच्चे कुले पच्चाजातो होति, खत्तियमहासालकुले वा ब्राह्मणमहासालकुले वा गहपतिमहासालकुले वा, अड्ढे महद्धने महाभोगे पहूतजातरूपरजते पहूतवित्तूपकरणे पहूतधनधञ्ञे। सो च होति अभिरूपो दस्सनीयो पासादिको, परमाय वण्णपोक्खरताय समन्नागतो, लाभी अन्नस्स पानस्स वत्थस्स यानस्स मालागन्धविलेपनस्स सेय्यावसथपदीपेय्यस्स। सो कायेन दुच्चरितं चरति, वाचाय दुच्चरितं चरति, मनसा दुच्चरितं चरति। सो कायेन दुच्चरितं चरित्वा वाचाय दुच्चरितं चरित्वा मनसा दुच्चरितं चरित्वा, कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं निरयं उपपज्जति।

    Kathañca, mahārāja, puggalo jotitamaparāyano hoti? Idha, mahārāja, ekacco puggalo ucce kule paccājāto hoti, khattiyamahāsālakule vā brāhmaṇamahāsālakule vā gahapatimahāsālakule vā, aḍḍhe mahaddhane mahābhoge pahūtajātarūparajate pahūtavittūpakaraṇe pahūtadhanadhaññe. So ca hoti abhirūpo dassanīyo pāsādiko, paramāya vaṇṇapokkharatāya samannāgato, lābhī annassa pānassa vatthassa yānassa mālāgandhavilepanassa seyyāvasathapadīpeyyassa. So kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, manasā duccaritaṁ carati. So kāyena duccaritaṁ caritvā vācāya duccaritaṁ caritvā manasā duccaritaṁ caritvā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati.

    And how is a person light and bound for darkness? It’s when some person is reborn in an eminent family—a well-to-do family of aristocrats, brahmins, or householders—rich, affluent, and wealthy, with lots of gold and silver, lots of property and assets, and lots of money and grain. And they’re attractive, good-looking, lovely, of surpassing beauty. They get to have food, drink, clothes, and vehicles; garlands, perfumes, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting. But they do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

    सेय्यथापि, महाराज, पुरिसो पासादा वा हत्थिक्खन्धं ओरोहेय्य, हत्थिक्खन्धा वा अस्सपिट्ठिं ओरोहेय्य, अस्सपिट्ठिया वा पल्लङ्कं ओरोहेय्य, पल्लङ्का वा पथविं ओरोहेय्य, पथविया वा अन्धकारं पविसेय्य। तथूपमाहं, महाराज, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि। एवं खो, महाराज, पुग्गलो जोतितमपरायनो होति।

    Seyyathāpi, mahārāja, puriso pāsādā vā hatthikkhandhaṁ oroheyya, hatthikkhandhā vā assapiṭṭhiṁ oroheyya, assapiṭṭhiyā vā pallaṅkaṁ oroheyya, pallaṅkā vā pathaviṁ oroheyya, pathaviyā vā andhakāraṁ paviseyya. Tathūpamāhaṁ, mahārāja, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi. Evaṁ kho, mahārāja, puggalo jotitamaparāyano hoti.

    This person is like someone who descends from a stilt longhouse to an elephant; from an elephant to horseback; from horseback to a couch; and from a couch to the ground; and from the ground they enter darkness. That’s how a person is light and bound for darkness.

    Seyyathāpi, mahārāja, puriso pallaṅkā vā pallaṅkaṁ saṅkameyya, assapiṭṭhiyā vā assapiṭṭhiṁ saṅkameyya, hatthikkhandhā vā hatthikkhandhaṁ saṅkameyya, pāsādā vā pāsādaṁ saṅkameyya. Tathūpamāhaṁ, mahārāja, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi. Evaṁ kho, mahārāja, puggalo jotijotiparāyano hoti. Ime kho, mahārāja, cattāro puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.

    This person is like someone who shifts from one couch to another; from the back of one horse to another; from one elephant to another; or from one stilt longhouse to another. That’s how a person is light and bound for light. These are the four people found in the world.”

    That is what the Buddha said. …

    “दलिद्दो पुरिसो राज, अस्सद्धो होति मच्छरी; कदरियो पापसङ्कप्पो, मिच्छादिट्ठि अनादरो।

    “Daliddo puriso rāja, assaddho hoti maccharī; Kadariyo pāpasaṅkappo, micchādiṭṭhi anādaro.

    “O king, some people are poor, faithless and stingy. Miserly, with bad intentions, they lack regard, they have wrong view.

    समणे ब्राह्मणे वापि, अञ्ञे वापि वनिब्बके; अक्कोसति परिभासति, नत्थिको होति रोसको।

    Samaṇe brāhmaṇe vāpi, aññe vāpi vanibbake; Akkosati paribhāsati, natthiko hoti rosako.

    They abuse and insult ascetics and brahmins and other renunciates. They’re nihilists and bullies,

    ददमानं निवारेति, याचमानान भोजनं; तादिसो पुरिसो राज, मीयमानो जनाधिप; उपेति निरयं घोरं, तमोतमपरायनो।

    Dadamānaṁ nivāreti, yācamānāna bhojanaṁ; Tādiso puriso rāja, mīyamāno janādhipa; Upeti nirayaṁ ghoraṁ, tamotamaparāyano.

    who prevent others from giving food to beggars. O king, ruler of the people: when such people die they fall into the terrible hell—from darkness they’re bound for darkness.

    दलिद्दो पुरिसो राज, सद्धो होति अमच्छरी; ददाति सेट्ठसङ्कप्पो, अब्यग्गमनसो नरो।

    Daliddo puriso rāja, saddho hoti amaccharī; Dadāti seṭṭhasaṅkappo, abyaggamanaso naro.

    O king, some people are poor, but faithful and not stingy. They give with best of intentions, that peaceful-hearted person.

    समणे ब्राह्मणे वापि, अञ्ञे वापि वनिब्बके; उट्ठाय अभिवादेति, समचरियाय सिक्खति।

    Samaṇe brāhmaṇe vāpi, aññe vāpi vanibbake; Uṭṭhāya abhivādeti, samacariyāya sikkhati.

    They rise for and bow to ascetics and brahmins and other nomads. Training in moral conduct,

    ददमानं न वारेति, याचमानान भोजनं; तादिसो पुरिसो राज, मीयमानो जनाधिप; उपेति तिदिवं ठानं, तमोजोतिपरायनो।

    Dadamānaṁ na vāreti, yācamānāna bhojanaṁ; Tādiso puriso rāja, mīyamāno janādhipa; Upeti tidivaṁ ṭhānaṁ, tamojotiparāyano.

    they don’t prevent others from giving food to beggars. O king, ruler of the people: when such people die they go to the heaven of the Three and Thirty—from darkness they’re bound for light.

    अड्ढो चे पुरिसो राज, अस्सद्धो होति मच्छरी; कदरियो पापसङ्कप्पो, मिच्छादिट्ठि अनादरो।

    Aḍḍho ce3 puriso rāja, assaddho hoti maccharī; Kadariyo pāpasaṅkappo, micchādiṭṭhi anādaro.

    O king, some people are rich, but faithless and stingy. Miserly, with bad intentions, they lack regard, they have wrong view.
