एकं समयं भगवा कोसलेसु विहरति हिमवन्तपदेसे अरञ्ञकुटिकायं।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosalesu viharati himavantapadese1 araññakuṭikāyaṁ.
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans, in a wilderness hut on the slopes of the Himalayas.
अथ खो भगवतो रहोगतस्स पटिसल्लीनस्स एवं चेतसो परिवितक्को उदपादि: “सक्का नु खो रज्जं कारेतुं अहनं अघातयं अजिनं अजापयं असोचं असोचापयं धम्मेना”ति?
Atha kho bhagavato rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṁ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: “sakkā nu kho rajjaṁ kāretuṁ ahanaṁ aghātayaṁ ajinaṁ ajāpayaṁ asocaṁ asocāpayaṁ dhammenā”ti?
Then as he was in private retreat this thought came to his mind, “I wonder if it’s possible to rule legitimately, without killing or having someone kill for you; without conquering or having someone conquer for you; without sorrowing or causing sorrow?”
अथ खो मारो पापिमा भगवतो चेतसा चेतोपरिवितक्कमञ्ञाय येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “कारेतु, भन्ते, भगवा रज्जं, कारेतु, सुगतो, रज्जं अहनं अघातयं अजिनं अजापयं असोचं असोचापयं धम्मेना”ति।
Atha kho māro pāpimā bhagavato cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “kāretu, bhante, bhagavā rajjaṁ, kāretu, sugato, rajjaṁ ahanaṁ aghātayaṁ ajinaṁ ajāpayaṁ asocaṁ asocāpayaṁ dhammenā”ti.
And then Māra the Wicked, knowing what the Buddha was thinking, went up to him and said, “Rule, Blessed One! Rule, Holy One! Rule legitimately, without killing or having someone kill for you; without conquering or having someone conquer for you; without sorrowing or causing sorrow!”
“किं पन मे त्वं, पापिम, पस्ससि यं मं त्वं एवं वदेसि: ‘कारेतु, भन्ते, भगवा रज्जं, कारेतु सुगतो, रज्जं अहनं अघातयं अजिनं अजापयं असोचं असोचापयं धम्मेनाऽ”ति?
“Kiṁ pana me tvaṁ, pāpima, passasi yaṁ maṁ tvaṁ evaṁ vadesi: ‘kāretu, bhante, bhagavā rajjaṁ, kāretu sugato, rajjaṁ ahanaṁ aghātayaṁ ajinaṁ ajāpayaṁ asocaṁ asocāpayaṁ dhammenā’”ti?
“But what do you see, Wicked One, that you say this to me?”
“भगवता खो, भन्ते, चत्तारो इद्धिपादा भाविता बहुलीकता यानीकता वत्थुकता अनुट्ठिता परिचिता सुसमारद्धा। आकङ्खमानो च, भन्ते, भगवा हिमवन्तं पब्बतराजं सुवण्णं त्वेव अधिमुच्चेय्य सुवण्णञ्च पनस्सा”ति।
“Bhagavatā kho, bhante, cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā. Ākaṅkhamāno ca, bhante, bhagavā himavantaṁ pabbatarājaṁ suvaṇṇaṁ tveva adhimucceyya suvaṇṇañca panassā”ti.
“The Blessed One, sir, has developed and cultivated the four bases for psychic power, made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them. If he wished, the Blessed One need only determine that the Himalaya, king of mountains, was gold, and it would turn into gold.”
“पब्बतस्स सुवण्णस्स, जातरूपस्स केवलो; द्वित्ताव नालमेकस्स, इति विद्वा समञ्चरे।
“Pabbatassa suvaṇṇassa, jātarūpassa kevalo; Dvittāva nālamekassa, iti vidvā samañcare.
“Take a golden mountain, made entirely of gold, and double it—it’s still not enough for one! Knowing this, live a moral life.
यो दुक्खमद्दक्खि यतोनिदानं, कामेसु सो जन्तु कथं नमेय्य; उपधिं विदित्वा सङ्गोति लोके, तस्सेव जन्तु विनयाय सिक्खे”ति।
Yo dukkhamaddakkhi yatonidānaṁ, Kāmesu so jantu kathaṁ nameyya; Upadhiṁ viditvā saṅgoti loke, Tasseva jantu vinayāya sikkhe”ti.
When a person has seen where suffering comes from how could they incline towards sensual pleasures? Realizing that attachment is a snare in the world, a person would train to remove it.”
अथ खो मारो पापिमा “जानाति मं भगवा, जानाति मं सुगतो”ति दुक्खी दुम्मनो तत्थेवन्तरधायीति।
Atha kho māro pāpimā “jānāti maṁ bhagavā, jānāti maṁ sugato”ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, “The Buddha knows me! The Holy One knows me!” miserable and sad, vanished right there.
दुतियो वग्गो।
Dutiyo vaggo.
तस्सुद्दानं
Tassuddānaṁ
पासाणो सीहो सकलिकं, पतिरूपञ्च मानसं; पत्तं आयतनं पिण्डं, कस्सकं रज्जेन ते दसाति।
Pāsāṇo sīho sakalikaṁ, Patirūpañca mānasaṁ; Pattaṁ āyatanaṁ piṇḍaṁ, Kassakaṁ rajjena te dasāti.
