The Complete Understanding of All Grasping
“सब्बुपादानपरिञ्ञाय वो, भिक्खवे, धम्मं देसेस्सामि। तं सुणाथ।
“Sabbupādānapariññāya vo, bhikkhave, dhammaṁ desessāmi. Taṁ suṇātha.

कतमो च, भिक्खवे, सब्बुपादानपरिञ्ञाय धम्मो?
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sabbupādānapariññāya1 dhammo?
And what is the principle for the complete understanding of all grasping?
चक्खुञ्च पटिच्च रूपे च उप्पज्जति चक्खुविञ्ञाणं। तिण्णं सङ्गति फस्सो। फस्सपच्चया वेदना।
Cakkhuñca paṭicca rūpe ca uppajjati cakkhuviññāṇaṁ. Tiṇṇaṁ saṅgati phasso. Phassapaccayā vedanā.
Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact. Contact is a condition for feeling.
एवं पस्सं, भिक्खवे, सुतवा अरियसावको चक्खुस्मिम्पि निब्बिन्दति, रूपेसुपि निब्बिन्दति, चक्खुविञ्ञाणेपि निब्बिन्दति, चक्खुसम्फस्सेपि निब्बिन्दति, वेदनायपि निब्बिन्दति। निब्बिन्दं विरज्जति; विरागा विमुच्चति; विमोक्खा ‘परिञ्ञातं मे उपादानन्ऽति पजानाति।
Evaṁ passaṁ, bhikkhave, sutavā ariyasāvako cakkhusmimpi nibbindati, rūpesupi nibbindati, cakkhuviññāṇepi nibbindati, cakkhusamphassepi nibbindati, vedanāyapi nibbindati. Nibbindaṁ virajjati; virāgā vimuccati; vimokkhā ‘pariññātaṁ me upādānan’ti pajānāti.
Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with the eye, sights, eye consciousness, eye contact, and feeling. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they are released, they understand: ‘I have completely understood grasping.’
