    Sahetuanattasutta

    Not-Self With Its Cause

    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    “रूपं, भिक्खवे, अनत्ता। योपि हेतु योपि पच्चयो रूपस्स उप्पादाय, सोपि अनत्ता। अनत्तसम्भूतं, भिक्खवे, रूपं कुतो अत्ता भविस्सति।

    “Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, anattā. Yopi hetu yopi paccayo rūpassa uppādāya, sopi anattā. Anattasambhūtaṁ, bhikkhave, rūpaṁ kuto attā bhavissati.

    “Bhikkhus, form is not-self. The cause and reason that gives rise to form is also not-self. Since form is produced by what is not-self, how could it be self?

    विञ्ञाणं अनत्ता। योपि हेतु योपि पच्चयो विञ्ञाणस्स उप्पादाय, सोपि अनत्ता। अनत्तसम्भूतं, भिक्खवे, विञ्ञाणं कुतो अत्ता भविस्सति।

    viññāṇaṁ anattā. Yopi hetu yopi paccayo viññāṇassa uppādāya, sopi anattā. Anattasambhūtaṁ, bhikkhave, viññāṇaṁ kuto attā bhavissati.

    Consciousness is not-self. The cause and reason that gives rise to consciousness is also not-self. Since consciousness is produced by what is not-self, how could it be self?

    एवं पस्सं …पे… नापरं इत्थत्तायाऽति पजानाती”ति।

    Evaṁ passaṁ …pe… nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānātī”ti.

    Seeing this … They understand: ‘… there is no return to any state of existence.’”
