    Sakalikasutta

    A Splinter

    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति मद्दकुच्छिस्मिं मिगदाये।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati maddakucchismiṁ migadāye.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha in the Maddakucchi deer park.

    तेन खो पन समयेन भगवतो पादो सकलिकाय खतो होति, भुसा सुदं भगवतो वेदना वत्तन्ति सारीरिका दुक्खा तिब्बा खरा कटुका असाता अमनापा। ता सुदं भगवा सतो सम्पजानो अधिवासेति अविहञ्ञमानो। अथ खो भगवा चतुग्गुणं सङ्घाटिं पञ्ञपेत्वा दक्खिणेन पस्सेन सीहसेय्यं कप्पेसि पादे पादं अच्चाधाय सतो सम्पजानो।

    Tena kho pana samayena bhagavato pādo sakalikāya khato hoti, bhusā sudaṁ bhagavato vedanā vattanti sārīrikā dukkhā tibbā kharā kaṭukā asātā amanāpā. Tā sudaṁ bhagavā sato sampajāno adhivāseti avihaññamāno. Atha kho bhagavā catugguṇaṁ saṅghāṭiṁ paññapetvā dakkhiṇena passena sīhaseyyaṁ kappesi pāde pādaṁ accādhāya sato sampajāno.

    Now at that time the Buddha’s foot had been cut by a splinter. The Buddha was stricken by harrowing pains; physical feelings that were painful, sharp, severe, acute, unpleasant, and disagreeable. But he endured unbothered, with mindfulness and situational awareness. And then he spread out his outer robe folded in four and laid down in the lion’s posture—on the right side, placing one foot on top of the other—mindful and aware.

    अथ खो मारो पापिमा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं गाथाय अज्झभासि:

    Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    Then Māra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse:

    “मन्दिया नु खो सेसि उदाहु कावेय्यमत्तो, अत्था नु ते सम्पचुरा न सन्ति; एको विवित्ते सयनासनम्हि, निद्दामुखो किमिदं सोप्पसे वा”ति।

    “Mandiyā nu kho sesi udāhu kāveyyamatto, Atthā nu te sampacurā na santi; Eko vivitte sayanāsanamhi, Niddāmukho kimidaṁ soppase vā”ti.

    “Are you feeble that you lie down? Or are you drunk on poetry? Don’t you have all that you need? Alone in a secluded lodging, why this sleeping, sleepyhead?”

    “न मन्दिया सयामि नापि कावेय्यमत्तो, अत्थं समेच्चाहमपेतसोको; एको विवित्ते सयनासनम्हि, सयामहं सब्बभूतानुकम्पी।

    “Na mandiyā sayāmi nāpi kāveyyamatto, Atthaṁ sameccāhamapetasoko; Eko vivitte sayanāsanamhi, Sayāmahaṁ sabbabhūtānukampī.

    “I’m not feeble that I lie down, nor am I drunk on poetry. Having reached the goal, I’m rid of sorrow. Alone in a secluded lodging, I lie down full of compassion for all living creatures.

    येसम्पि सल्लं उरसि पविट्ठं, मुहुं मुहुं हदयं वेधमानं; तेपीध सोप्पं लभरे ससल्ला, तस्मा अहं न सुपे वीतसल्लो।

    Yesampi sallaṁ urasi paviṭṭhaṁ, Muhuṁ muhuṁ hadayaṁ vedhamānaṁ; Tepīdha soppaṁ labhare sasallā, Tasmā ahaṁ na supe vītasallo.

    Even those with a dart stuck in the breast, piercing the heart again and again, are able to get some sleep. So why not I, whose dart is drawn out?

    जग्गं न सङ्के नपि भेमि सोत्तुं, रत्तिन्दिवा नानुतपन्ति मामं; हानिं न पस्सामि कुहिञ्चि लोके, तस्मा सुपे सब्बभूतानुकम्पी”ति।

    Jaggaṁ na saṅke napi bhemi sottuṁ, Rattindivā nānutapanti māmaṁ; Hāniṁ na passāmi kuhiñci loke, Tasmā supe sabbabhūtānukampī”ti.

    I don’t lie awake tense, nor do I fear to sleep. The days and nights don’t disturb me, as I see no decline for myself in the world. That’s why I lie down full of compassion for all living creatures.”

    अथ खो मारो पापिमा “जानाति मं भगवा, जानाति मं सुगतो”ति दुक्खी दुम्मनो तत्थेवन्तरधायीति।

    Atha kho māro pāpimā “jānāti maṁ bhagavā, jānāti maṁ sugato”ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti.

    Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, “The Buddha knows me! The Holy One knows me!” miserable and sad, vanished right there.
