    Sakuṇagghisutta

    A Hawk

    “भूतपुब्बं, भिक्खवे, सकुणग्घि लापं सकुणं सहसा अज्झप्पत्ता अग्गहेसि। अथ खो, भिक्खवे, लापो सकुणो सकुणग्घिया हरियमानो एवं परिदेवसि: ‘मयमेवम्ह अलक्खिका, मयं अप्पपुञ्ञा, ये मयं अगोचरे चरिम्ह परविसये। सचेज्ज मयं गोचरे चरेय्याम सके पेत्तिके विसये, न म्यायं, सकुणग्घि, अलं अभविस्स, यदिदं—युद्धायाऽति।

    “Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, sakuṇagghi lāpaṁ sakuṇaṁ sahasā ajjhappattā aggahesi. Atha kho, bhikkhave, lāpo sakuṇo sakuṇagghiyā hariyamāno evaṁ paridevasi: ‘mayamevamha1 alakkhikā, mayaṁ appapuññā, ye mayaṁ agocare carimha paravisaye. Sacejja mayaṁ gocare careyyāma sake pettike visaye, na myāyaṁ, sakuṇagghi, alaṁ abhavissa, yadidaṁ—yuddhāyā’ti.

    “Once upon a time, bhikkhus, a hawk suddenly swooped down and grabbed a quail. And as the quail was being carried off he wailed, ‘I’m so unlucky, so unfortunate, to have roamed out of my territory into the domain of others. If today I’d roamed within my own territory, the domain of my fathers, this hawk wouldn’t have been able to beat me by fighting.’

    ‘को पन ते, लाप, गोचरो सको पेत्तिको विसयोऽति?

    ‘Ko pana te, lāpa, gocaro sako pettiko visayo’ti?

    ‘So, quail, what is your own territory, the domain of your fathers?’

    ‘यदिदं—नङ्गलकट्ठकरणं लेड्डुट्ठानन्ऽति।

    ‘Yadidaṁ—naṅgalakaṭṭhakaraṇaṁ leḍḍuṭṭhānan’ti.

    ‘It’s a ploughed field covered with clods of earth.’

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, सकुणग्घि सके बले अपत्थद्धा सके बले असंवदमाना लापं सकुणं पमुञ्चि: ‘गच्छ खो त्वं, लाप, तत्रपि मे गन्त्वा न मोक्खसीऽति।

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakuṇagghi sake bale apatthaddhā sake bale asaṁvadamānā lāpaṁ sakuṇaṁ pamuñci: ‘gaccha kho tvaṁ, lāpa, tatrapi me gantvā na mokkhasī’ti.

    Confident in her own strength, the hawk was not daunted or intimidated. She released the quail, saying, ‘Go now, quail. But even there you won’t escape me!’

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, लापो सकुणो नङ्गलकट्ठकरणं लेड्डुट्ठानं गन्त्वा महन्तं लेड्डुं अभिरुहित्वा सकुणग्घिं वदमानो अट्ठासि: ‘एहि खो दानि मे, सकुणग्घि, एहि खो दानि मे, सकुणग्घीऽति।

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, lāpo sakuṇo naṅgalakaṭṭhakaraṇaṁ leḍḍuṭṭhānaṁ gantvā mahantaṁ leḍḍuṁ abhiruhitvā sakuṇagghiṁ vadamāno aṭṭhāsi: ‘ehi kho dāni me, sakuṇagghi, ehi kho dāni me, sakuṇagghī’ti.

    Then the quail went to a ploughed field covered with clods of earth. He climbed up a big clod, and standing there, he said to the hawk: ‘Come get me, hawk! Come get me, hawk!’

    अथ खो सा, भिक्खवे, सकुणग्घि सके बले अपत्थद्धा सके बले असंवदमाना उभो पक्खे सन्नय्ह लापं सकुणं सहसा अज्झप्पत्ता। यदा खो, भिक्खवे, अञ्ञासि लापो सकुणो ‘बहुआगतो खो म्यायं सकुणग्घीऽति, अथ तस्सेव लेड्डुस्स अन्तरं पच्चुपादि। अथ खो, भिक्खवे, सकुणग्घि तत्थेव उरं पच्चताळेसि।

    Atha kho sā, bhikkhave, sakuṇagghi sake bale apatthaddhā sake bale asaṁvadamānā ubho pakkhe sannayha2 lāpaṁ sakuṇaṁ sahasā ajjhappattā. Yadā kho, bhikkhave, aññāsi lāpo sakuṇo ‘bahuāgato kho myāyaṁ sakuṇagghī’ti, atha tasseva leḍḍussa antaraṁ paccupādi. Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakuṇagghi tattheva uraṁ paccatāḷesi.

    Confident in her own strength, the hawk was not daunted or intimidated. She folded her wings and suddenly swooped down on the quail. When the quail knew that the hawk was nearly there, he slipped under that clod. But the hawk crashed chest-first right there.

    एवञ्हि तं, भिक्खवे, होति यो अगोचरे चरति परविसये।

    Evañhi taṁ, bhikkhave, hoti yo agocare carati paravisaye.

    That’s what happens when you roam out of your territory into the domain of others.

    तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, मा अगोचरे चरित्थ परविसये। अगोचरे, भिक्खवे, चरतं परविसये लच्छति मारो ओतारं, लच्छति मारो आरम्मणं।

    Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, mā agocare carittha paravisaye. Agocare, bhikkhave, carataṁ paravisaye lacchati māro otāraṁ, lacchati māro ārammaṇaṁ.

    So, bhikkhus, don’t roam out of your own territory into the domain of others. If you roam out of your own territory into the domain of others, Māra will find a vulnerability and get hold of you.

    को च, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो अगोचरो परविसयो? यदिदं—पञ्च कामगुणा। कतमे पञ्च? चक्खुविञ्ञेय्या रूपा इट्ठा कन्ता मनापा पियरूपा कामूपसंहिता रजनीया, सोतविञ्ञेय्या सद्दा …पे… घानविञ्ञेय्या गन्धा …पे… जिव्हाविञ्ञेय्या रसा …पे… कायविञ्ञेय्या फोट्ठब्बा इट्ठा कन्ता मनापा पियरूपा कामूपसंहिता रजनीया—अयं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो अगोचरो परविसयो।

    Ko ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno agocaro paravisayo? Yadidaṁ—pañca kāmaguṇā. Katame pañca? Cakkhuviññeyyā rūpā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā, sotaviññeyyā saddā …pe… ghānaviññeyyā gandhā …pe… jivhāviññeyyā rasā …pe… kāyaviññeyyā phoṭṭhabbā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā—ayaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno agocaro paravisayo.

    And what is not a bhikkhu’s own territory but the domain of others? It’s the five kinds of sensual stimulation. What five? Sights known by the eye that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. Sounds known by the ear … Smells known by the nose … Tastes known by the tongue … Touches known by the body that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. This is not a bhikkhu’s own territory but the domain of others.

    गोचरे, भिक्खवे, चरथ सके पेत्तिके विसये। गोचरे, भिक्खवे, चरतं सके पेत्तिके विसये न लच्छति मारो ओतारं, न लच्छति मारो आरम्मणं।

    Gocare, bhikkhave, caratha sake pettike visaye. Gocare, bhikkhave, carataṁ sake pettike visaye na lacchati māro otāraṁ, na lacchati māro ārammaṇaṁ.

    You should roam inside your own territory, the domain of your fathers. If you roam inside your own territory, the domain of your fathers, Māra won’t find a vulnerability or get hold of you.

    को च, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो गोचरो सको पेत्तिको विसयो? यदिदं—चत्तारो सतिपट्ठाना। कतमे चत्तारो? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु काये कायानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं; वेदनासु …पे… चित्ते …पे… धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं—अयं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो गोचरो सको पेत्तिको विसयो”ति।

    Ko ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno gocaro sako pettiko visayo? Yadidaṁ—cattāro satipaṭṭhānā. Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; vedanāsu …pe… citte …pe… dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ—ayaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno gocaro sako pettiko visayo”ti.

    And what is a bhikkhu’s own territory, the domain of the fathers? It’s the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. What four? It’s when a bhikkhu meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. They meditate observing an aspect of feelings … mind … principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. This is a bhikkhu’s own territory, the domain of the fathers.”
