At Sālā
एकं समयं भगवा कोसलेसु विहरति सालाय ब्राह्मणगामे। तत्र खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि …पे… एतदवोच:
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosalesu viharati sālāya brāhmaṇagāme. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi …pe… etadavoca:
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans near the brahmin village of Sālā. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus:
“ये ते, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू नवा अचिरपब्बजिता अधुनागता इमं धम्मविनयं, ते वो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू चतुन्नं सतिपट्ठानानं भावनाय समादपेतब्बा निवेसेतब्बा पतिट्ठापेतब्बा। कतमेसं चतुन्नं? एथ तुम्हे, आवुसो, काये कायानुपस्सिनो विहरथ आतापिनो सम्पजाना एकोदिभूता विप्पसन्नचित्ता समाहिता एकग्गचित्ता, कायस्स यथाभूतं ञाणाय; वेदनासु वेदनानुपस्सिनो विहरथ आतापिनो सम्पजाना एकोदिभूता विप्पसन्नचित्ता समाहिता एकग्गचित्ता, वेदनानं यथाभूतं ञाणाय; चित्ते चित्तानुपस्सिनो विहरथ आतापिनो सम्पजाना एकोदिभूता विप्पसन्नचित्ता समाहिता एकग्गचित्ता, चित्तस्स यथाभूतं ञाणाय; धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सिनो विहरथ आतापिनो सम्पजाना एकोदिभूता विप्पसन्नचित्ता समाहिता एकग्गचित्ता, धम्मानं यथाभूतं ञाणाय।
“Ye te, bhikkhave, bhikkhū navā acirapabbajitā adhunāgatā imaṁ dhammavinayaṁ, te vo, bhikkhave, bhikkhū catunnaṁ satipaṭṭhānānaṁ bhāvanāya samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiṭṭhāpetabbā. Katamesaṁ catunnaṁ? Etha tumhe, āvuso, kāye kāyānupassino viharatha ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, kāyassa yathābhūtaṁ ñāṇāya; vedanāsu vedanānupassino viharatha ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, vedanānaṁ yathābhūtaṁ ñāṇāya; citte cittānupassino viharatha ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, cittassa yathābhūtaṁ ñāṇāya; dhammesu dhammānupassino viharatha ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, dhammānaṁ yathābhūtaṁ ñāṇāya.
“Bhikkhus, those bhikkhus who are junior—recently gone forth, newly come to this teaching and training—should be encouraged, supported, and established in the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. What four? Please, friends, meditate observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, so as to truly know the body. Meditate observing an aspect of feelings—keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, so as to truly know feelings. Meditate observing an aspect of the mind—keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, so as to truly know the mind. Meditate observing an aspect of principles—keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, so as to truly know principles.
येपि ते, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू सेखा अप्पत्तमानसा अनुत्तरं योगक्खेमं पत्थयमाना विहरन्ति, तेपि काये कायानुपस्सिनो विहरन्ति आतापिनो सम्पजाना एकोदिभूता विप्पसन्नचित्ता समाहिता एकग्गचित्ता, कायस्स परिञ्ञाय; वेदनासु वेदनानुपस्सिनो विहरन्ति आतापिनो सम्पजाना एकोदिभूता विप्पसन्नचित्ता समाहिता एकग्गचित्ता, वेदनानं परिञ्ञाय; चित्ते चित्तानुपस्सिनो विहरन्ति आतापिनो सम्पजाना एकोदिभूता विप्पसन्नचित्ता समाहिता एकग्गचित्ता, चित्तस्स परिञ्ञाय; धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सिनो विहरन्ति आतापिनो सम्पजाना एकोदिभूता विप्पसन्नचित्ता समाहिता एकग्गचित्ता, धम्मानं परिञ्ञाय।
Yepi te, bhikkhave, bhikkhū sekhā appattamānasā anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ patthayamānā viharanti, tepi kāye kāyānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, kāyassa pariññāya; vedanāsu vedanānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, vedanānaṁ pariññāya; citte cittānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, cittassa pariññāya; dhammesu dhammānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, dhammānaṁ pariññāya.
Those bhikkhus who are trainees—who haven’t achieved their heart’s desire, but live aspiring to the supreme sanctuary from the yoke—also meditate observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, so as to fully understand the body. They meditate observing an aspect of feelings—keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, so as to fully understand feelings. They meditate observing an aspect of the mind—keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, so as to fully understand the mind. They meditate observing an aspect of principles—keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, so as to fully understand principles.
येपि ते, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू अरहन्तो खीणासवा वुसितवन्तो कतकरणीया ओहितभारा अनुप्पत्तसदत्था परिक्खीणभवसंयोजना सम्मदञ्ञाविमुत्ता, तेपि काये कायानुपस्सिनो विहरन्ति आतापिनो सम्पजाना एकोदिभूता विप्पसन्नचित्ता समाहिता एकग्गचित्ता, कायेन विसंयुत्ता; वेदनासु वेदनानुपस्सिनो विहरन्ति आतापिनो सम्पजाना एकोदिभूता विप्पसन्नचित्ता समाहिता एकग्गचित्ता, वेदनाहि विसंयुत्ता; चित्ते चित्तानुपस्सिनो विहरन्ति आतापिनो सम्पजाना एकोदिभूता विप्पसन्नचित्ता समाहिता एकग्गचित्ता, चित्तेन विसंयुत्ता; धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सिनो विहरन्ति आतापिनो सम्पजाना एकोदिभूता विप्पसन्नचित्ता समाहिता एकग्गचित्ता, धम्मेहि विसंयुत्ता।
Yepi te, bhikkhave, bhikkhū arahanto khīṇāsavā vusitavanto katakaraṇīyā ohitabhārā anuppattasadatthā parikkhīṇabhavasaṁyojanā sammadaññāvimuttā, tepi kāye kāyānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, kāyena visaṁyuttā; vedanāsu vedanānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, vedanāhi visaṁyuttā; citte cittānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, cittena visaṁyuttā; dhammesu dhammānupassino viharanti ātāpino sampajānā ekodibhūtā vippasannacittā samāhitā ekaggacittā, dhammehi visaṁyuttā.
Those bhikkhus who are perfected—who have ended the defilements, completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own goal, utterly ended the fetters of rebirth, and are rightly freed through enlightenment—also meditate observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, detached from the body. They meditate observing an aspect of feelings—keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, detached from feelings. They meditate observing an aspect of the mind—keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, detached from the mind. They meditate observing an aspect of principles—keen, aware, at one, with minds that are clear, immersed in samādhi, and unified, detached from principles.
येपि ते, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू नवा अचिरपब्बजिता अधुनागता इमं धम्मविनयं, ते वो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू इमेसं चतुन्नं सतिपट्ठानानं भावनाय समादपेतब्बा निवेसेतब्बा पतिट्ठापेतब्बा”ति।
