    सावत्थिनिदानं।

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    “चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, झायी। कतमे चत्तारो?

    “Cattārome, bhikkhave, jhāyī. Katame cattāro?

    “Bhikkhus, there are these four meditators. What four?

    इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो झायी समाधिस्मिं समाधिकुसलो होति, न समाधिस्मिं ठितिकुसलो।

    Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco jhāyī samādhismiṁ samādhikusalo hoti, na samādhismiṁ ṭhitikusalo.

    One meditator is skilled in immersion but not in remaining in it.

    इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो झायी समाधिस्मिं ठितिकुसलो होति, न समाधिस्मिं समाधिकुसलो।

    Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco jhāyī samādhismiṁ ṭhitikusalo hoti, na samādhismiṁ samādhikusalo.

    One meditator is skilled in remaining in immersion but is not skilled in immersion.

    इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो झायी नेव समाधिस्मिं समाधिकुसलो होति, न च समाधिस्मिं ठितिकुसलो।

    Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco jhāyī neva samādhismiṁ samādhikusalo hoti, na ca samādhismiṁ ṭhitikusalo.

    One meditator is skilled neither in immersion nor in remaining in it.

    इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो झायी समाधिस्मिं समाधिकुसलो च होति, समाधिस्मिं ठितिकुसलो च।

    Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco jhāyī samādhismiṁ samādhikusalo ca hoti, samādhismiṁ ṭhitikusalo ca.

    One meditator is skilled both in immersion and in remaining in it.

    तत्र, भिक्खवे, य्वायं झायी समाधिस्मिं समाधिकुसलो च होति समाधिस्मिं ठितिकुसलो च अयं इमेसं चतुन्नं झायीनं अग्गो च सेट्ठो च मोक्खो च उत्तमो च पवरो च।

    Tatra, bhikkhave, yvāyaṁ jhāyī samādhismiṁ samādhikusalo ca hoti samādhismiṁ ṭhitikusalo ca ayaṁ imesaṁ catunnaṁ jhāyīnaṁ aggo ca seṭṭho ca mokkho ca uttamo ca pavaro ca.

    Of these, the meditator skilled in immersion and in remaining in it is the foremost, best, leading, highest, and finest of the four.

    सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, गवा खीरं, खीरम्हा दधि, दधिम्हा नवनीतं, नवनीतम्हा सप्पि, सप्पिम्हा सप्पिमण्डो तत्र अग्गमक्खायति;

    Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, gavā khīraṁ, khīramhā dadhi, dadhimhā navanītaṁ, navanītamhā sappi, sappimhā sappimaṇḍo tatra aggamakkhāyati;

    From a cow comes milk, from milk comes curds, from curds come butter, from butter comes ghee, and from ghee comes cream of ghee. And the cream of ghee is said to be the best of these.

    एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, य्वायं झायी समाधिस्मिं समाधिकुसलो च होति समाधिस्मिं ठितिकुसलो च अयं इमेसं चतुन्नं झायीनं अग्गो च सेट्ठो च मोक्खो च उत्तमो च पवरो चा”ति।

    evameva kho, bhikkhave, yvāyaṁ jhāyī samādhismiṁ samādhikusalo ca hoti samādhismiṁ ṭhitikusalo ca ayaṁ imesaṁ catunnaṁ jhāyīnaṁ aggo ca seṭṭho ca mokkho ca uttamo ca pavaro cā”ti.

    In the same way, the meditator skilled in immersion and remaining in it is the foremost, best, leading, highest, and finest of the four.”
