Samiddhi’s Question About the World
“‘लोको, लोकोऽति, भन्ते, वुच्चति। कित्तावता नु खो, भन्ते, लोको वा अस्स लोकपञ्ञत्ति वा”ति?
“‘Loko, loko’ti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, loko vā assa lokapaññatti vā”ti?
“Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘the world’. How do we define the world or what is known as the world?”
“यत्थ खो, समिद्धि, अत्थि चक्खु, अत्थि रूपा, अत्थि चक्खुविञ्ञाणं, अत्थि चक्खुविञ्ञाणविञ्ञातब्बा धम्मा, अत्थि तत्थ लोको वा लोकपञ्ञत्ति वाति …पे… अत्थि जिव्हा …पे… अत्थि मनो, अत्थि धम्मा, अत्थि मनोविञ्ञाणं, अत्थि मनोविञ्ञाणविञ्ञातब्बा धम्मा, अत्थि तत्थ लोको वा लोकपञ्ञत्ति वा।
“Yattha kho, samiddhi, atthi cakkhu, atthi rūpā, atthi cakkhuviññāṇaṁ, atthi cakkhuviññāṇaviññātabbā dhammā, atthi tattha loko vā lokapaññatti vāti …pe… atthi jivhā …pe… atthi mano, atthi dhammā, atthi manoviññāṇaṁ, atthi manoviññāṇaviññātabbā dhammā, atthi tattha loko vā lokapaññatti vā.
“Samiddhi, where there is the eye, sights, eye consciousness, and phenomena to be known by eye consciousness, there is the world or what is known as the world. Where there is the ear … nose … tongue … body … Where there is the mind, thoughts, mind consciousness, and phenomena to be known by mind consciousness, there is the world or what is known as the world.
यत्थ च खो, समिद्धि, नत्थि चक्खु, नत्थि रूपा, नत्थि चक्खुविञ्ञाणं, नत्थि चक्खुविञ्ञाणविञ्ञातब्बा धम्मा, नत्थि तत्थ लोको वा लोकपञ्ञत्ति वा …पे… नत्थि जिव्हा …पे… नत्थि मनो, नत्थि धम्मा, नत्थि मनोविञ्ञाणं, नत्थि मनोविञ्ञाणविञ्ञातब्बा धम्मा, नत्थि तत्थ लोको वा लोकपञ्ञत्ति वा”ति।

Where there is no eye, no sights, no eye consciousness, and no phenomena to be known by eye consciousness, there is no world or what is known as the world. Where there is no ear … nose … tongue … body … Where there is no mind, no thoughts, no mind consciousness, and no phenomena to be known by mind consciousness, there is no world or what is known as the world.”
